Bear print Emergency Fundraiser - Steve Ready, a former teacher at M-A for many years, and now IVP at Sequoia, welcomed his new baby, Amaryillis Juniper Ready, into the world last Wednesday! Unfortunately, just hours after the baby arrived, the Ready's apartment building in San Francisco went up in flames. Sadly, everything that the family didn't have with them at the hospital was lost. The M-A staff has already begun to care for and help the Ready family. The staff would like to share the link to a funding site that was created for the Ready's and encourage the M-A community to join in helping them during this very hard time. Any contributions are greatly appreciated!

SEQUOIA PARENT EDUCATION SERIES

The Mask You Live In, Documentary film from The Representation Project
Introduction by Steve Smith, PhD, Palo Alto University

SequoiaParentThursday, February 26, 7 - 9 p.m.
Sequoia High School, Carrington Hall

The Sequoia Parent Education Series is proud to offer a premier showing of the new documentary film from Jennifer Siebel Newsom and The Representation Project, The Mask You Live In. Compared to girls, research shows that boys in the U.S. are more likely to be diagnosed with a behavior disorder, prescribed stimulant medications (for ADD/ADHD), fail out of school, binge drink, commit a violent crime, and/or take their own lives. The Mask You Live In asks the important question: As a society, how are we failing our boys?

"We must challenge definitions of masculinity, model the change we want to see, then seek it in mentors and teachers who will help our boys stay true to themselves. The Mask You Live In is not just a film - it's a movement. This is just the beginning. We're all coming together in a beautiful way, and the time is now. Our boys don't need to suffer, and they don't need to live in pain." - Jennifer Siebel Newsom Writer, Director, & Producer of The Mask You Live In and CEO of The Representation Project

Sequoia Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the Sequoia High School Education Foundation, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. Simultaneous Spanish interpretation will be provided.

Thursday, March 12
10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
SUHSD Office, Birch Room, 480 James Avenue, Redwood City

Please register for this event at Eventbrite.

Automobile collisions are the leading cause of death for our nation's teens. The overwhelming majority of these crashes are caused by inexperience or distractions, not thrill-seeking or deliberate risk-taking. Teen drivers are at the highest risk; the crash rate for 16 years olds is four times that of adults. In this workshop, you will learn strategies to keep your teens safe on the road:

  • Graduated Drivers Licensing (GDL) laws
  • The Rules of the Road for teen drivers
  • How YOU can stop the #1 killer of teens in America - reckless and distracted driving

Impact Teen Drivers is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reversing the pervasive yet preventable crisis of "distracted driving." Impact's mission is to change the culture of teen driving.

SUHSD Parent Education Series events are free and open to SUHSD parents, faculty, staff, and community members. This mini-series is sponsored by the Sequoia Healthcare District and the Sequoia Union High School District.

WhereYouGoWhere You Go is Not Who You'll Be:  An Antidote to the College Admission Mania

Frank Bruni, New York Times Columnist and Bestselling Author

Monday, April 6

7 - 8:30 p.m., PAC

Please register for tickets.

Over the last few decades, Americans have turned college admissions into a stressful and occasionally devastating rite of passage, preceded by test prep, tutors, all kinds of rankings, and a conviction among too many young people that their futures will be determined and their worth established by which schools say "yes" and which say "no." That belief is wrong. And in Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be, Bruni explains why, giving students and their parents a new outlook on this brutal, deeply flawed competition and a path out of the anxiety that it provokes.

Frank Bruni has been an Op-Ed columnist for The New York Times since June 2011, focusing on a range of subjects including higher education. In two decades at The Times, he has also been the paper's chief restaurant critic, its Rome bureau chief, a White House correspondent, and the lead reporter covering George W. Bush's 2000 presidential campaign.

M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the M-A PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. This event is open to parents, students, faculty/staff and community members. Simultaneous Spanish translation will be available.

For more information, contact Charlene Margot, M.A., The Parent Education Series, Founding Director, at cmargot@csmconsulting.net.

Women love him, men want to be him, and teenage girls around the country scream with glee at the mere mention of his name. Birdie's manager, Albert Peterson, and Albert's long-time love, Rose, select a super fan to receive a goodbye kiss from Conrad for the entire world to see on television. The super fan, Kim MacAfee, can't understand why her boyfriend would be upset by the kiss. Rose can't take another minute of Albert running away from marriage, and Sweet Apple, Ohio can't handle the teen rebellion inspired by the arrival of bad-boy Birdie. Will Sweet Apple ever be the same?

Weekly Sports Wrap-Up

Bear print Girls Varsity BasketballThe Bears won the PAL South Championship outright. It is the Bears first Championship since 2009 and its first outright Championship of the North/South-only era since 2001. After winning the Sonoma Dragon Classic Tournament at the start of the season, the team began tagging team photos with #StartWithAChampionshipEndWithAChampionship. This week the Bears sought to fulfill that goal in the PAL Tournament.

As PAL South Champions, the Bears received the #1 seed in the PAL Tournament. On Tuesday at M-A they played the #4 seed in the PAL North, South San Francisco. In the first quarter the Bears 6 day layoff showed as a determined South San Francisco team went up 5-3 in the first 3 minutes. M-A's Greer Hoyem had 7 of her 12 points on the night in the first quarter as the Bears rallied back to tie the game with a minute remaining. Freshman Carly McLanahan hit a 3-pointer to give the Bears a 3 point lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter Sarah Howell hit 3 of her 4 3-pointers on the night as M-A began to extend its lead. M-A's defense stiffened, led by Megan Sparrow who had 12 rebounds. After a defensive struggle in the third quarter, the Bears broke the game open in the fourth quarter with 7 points from Hoyem and Ofa Sili to put the game away, 44-28.

With the win the Bears advanced to the semi-finals. On Friday night at Mills the team faced the #2 seed in the North, Half Moon Bay. The Bears started fast. McLanahan hit 3 first half 3-pointers and senior captain Naomi Baer drove, scored, and drew fouls to help the Bears jump out to a 28-14 half-time lead. The Bears defense dominated the first 2 quarters led by Sparrow and Sili who had 5 straight defensive takeaways. The second half was a different matter. The Cougars started hitting their shots and the Bears' 17 point lead fell to 4 points with 3 minutes left in the game. However the Bears defense stiffened and post Sili hit 5 free throws to put the game away, 54-45.

With the win the Bears advanced to the finals aka "the County Championship Game,"  Saturday Night at Mills where they faced Westmoor, the undefeated champions of the PAL North. As last year's PAL tournament champion and PAL North champions 3 years running, the Rams were heavy favorites, until the game started. In the first quarter, the Bears went on a 15-2 run in M-A style, with 6 Bears scoring. With the M-A defense in lock down mode the Bears jumped out to a 19-8 lead. In the second quarter the Rams closed the lead to 27-21. Howell hit her second 3-pointer of the half but the Rams answered back. In the third quarter the Rams briefly took the lead 29-28, but it did not last long. The Bears struggled to score in the paint early in the game but they succeeded in getting the Rams in foul trouble. Late in the third that work paid off as the Ram's post players headed to the bench and the Bears went on a 15-0 run. Sili had a pair of 3-pointers in the third on her way to 14 points in the game. N. Baer scored 7 of her 10 points during the run and the game was out of reach. The Bears celebrated their first PAL Tournament Championship since 2008 with a decisive win 54-42. The Bears earned the #2 seed in CCS Division 1. After first and second round byes, the Bears and will play on Saturday, February 28 at Piedmont Hills High School, time to be determined.

Bear print Boys Freshman BasketballThe Bears delivered another successful season, earning the league championship under veteran coaches Harry Bell and Art Weil. The coaches crafted a challenging preseason schedule against the likes of Serra and Bellermine. These early losses against talented squads resulted in a 4-7 record and gave the boys a taste for how much harder they needed to work to become a competitive team. And work they did. Practices were spirited and each game, you could tell that no one wanted to come off the court. The early losses turned to close wins and eventually to commanding control of most games. The winning streak was ignited mid-season by Julian Verbo's three-pointer with M-A down by 2 against Carlmont and less than a minute to play. Each week you could see the progress; turnovers shrunk, the big men avoided early foul trouble, and other teams were having a hard time scoring against M-A's pressure man to man. The best test was the late season game at Burlingame. Both teams were 9-1 in league play and the winner would move to the top of the standings. Burlingame scored on the opening tip off and took a big lead in the first few minutes and they eventually scored 20 points in the first quarter. M-A didn't rattle and fought back slowly over the next three quarters. After a season of difficulty at the foul line, the boys shot a near perfect 11 for 12, none bigger than the four in a row Aaron Letvin put in the last couple of minutes to ice the game. The season ending victory against Woodside finished the 12-1 run and brought the league championship to M-A.

Bear print Boys Varsity Basketball - The third time's the charm, or so the phrase goes. In the case of M-A vs Half Moon Bay, round 3, it was closer yet, but the phrase didn't hold. The two teams met for the third time this season, with HMB winning the first two games by 10 and 14 points. In this PAL quarterfinal, the Bears gave the 23-1 Cougars all they could handle, but went down 45-39. M-A started strong with an 11-8 first quarter lead, which doubled to a 6-point lead, 25-19, at halftime. Blake Henry had 10 points in the first half against a team that has kept the Bears to its two lowest point totals of the season. HMB changed its defensive scheme in the second half, employing a press, and caused numerous turnovers. At the end of the third quarter, the score was tied at 32. With 5 minutes left, the score was still tied at 34, but the Cougars hit consecutive 3-pointers to open up a 6-point lead. The Bears fought hard, but could not catch up. Henry led the Bears with 13 points, while Ryan Cole and Christian Fioretti added 9 points each.

The Bears now move on to the CCS playoffs. M-A received the #6 seed in Division 1, meaning a bye in round 1 and being able to host a second- round match on Thursday, February 26 at 7 p.m. in Ayers Gym. Their opponent is the winner of a round 1 match between Milpitas and Cupertino. Should the Bears prevail, they will battle Sequoia in the quarterfinals at Foothill College, time to be determined. Come out and watch the Bears in their final home game!

Bear print Girls JV SoccerThe Bears wrapped up their season with a split as they defeated Hillsdale on Tuesday 1-0 and lost to Woodside on Thursday 1-2. The final PAL league standings will depend on how Woodside fares next week as they have a game in hand over the Bears that should be played this week.

Tuesday's 1-0 match against Hillsdale was not as close as the score indicates as the Bears dominated possession and shots on goal but goals themselves were difficult to come by. It took 22 minutes for M-A to get one in when Sarah Tiemann finished off a ball rattling around just inside the goal area that fizzed in on a cross from Mara Cavallero. The Bears had a few more chances in the first half but none would find the net and the second half played out the same way leaving the Bears holding on with 1-0 win at the final whistle.

Thursday's 1-2 match against Woodside was much more exciting. Just 5 minutes into the match Tiemann was clattered in the penalty area giving the Bears a penalty kick opportunity. Isabel Regonini took the kick but the Woodside keeper made a great diving save and kept the Bears off the scoreboard. At 13 mintues Woodside beat the offside trap and streaked in behind the defense to score. At 26 minutes Woodside once again caught the Bears in transition and scored to make it 0-2. M-A reduced the deficit to 1-2 in the 32nd minute when Cavallero scored from 6 yards out. Cavallero had another great chance to level the match in the second half at the 53rd minute when she sliced through the defense and went 1-on-1 with the Woodside keeper who blocked a crafty shot to preserve the slim lead. The Bears turned themselves inside-out trying to find the equalizer but Woodside matched their moves and held on until the final whistle leaving the Bears on the bitter end of a 1-2 defeat.

Bear print Girls Varsity SoccerIt was a fitting senior day for the team as the Bears defeated Hillsdale 4-0 last Tuesday. M-A's seven seniors - Jacqueline Foody, Taryn Harpell, Annie Harrier, Carolyn Hunt-Gonzalez, Salina Manibog, Ellie Purpura, and Amanda Wiseman - were introduced prior to the match and all were granted a spot in the starting lineup. In the 33rd minute, outside defender Jordan Olesen made a run down the right wing and floated a ball in to forward Josephine Cotto in the middle. Cotto deftly chipped the ball over the rushing keeper's head and into the net to put M-A up 1-0 at the half. In the second half, midfielder Sarah McLeod captured her own deflection off a defender and broke through the back line to place a beautiful ball into the left corner of the net for M-A's second goal in the 46th minute. With about 15 minutes remaining in the match, Cotto chipped the ball over the top of the defense to find speedy striker Katie Guenin, who broke free and finished with a great left-footed shot into the back of the net for a 3-0 M-A lead. Finally, it was senior Harrier who scored the fourth and final goal of the match in the 73rd minute when she collected a ball from a throw-in and fired a shot from the left side of the box to put an exclamation point on the match and give M-A a 4-0 victory.

In the final game of the PAL Bay Division for both teams, M-A managed to tie Woodside 1-1 to ruin senior day for the Wildcats at Woodside on Thursday. Woodside got on the board only 3 minutes into the game when the Wildcats pounded in a miscleared ball by the M-A defense. The Bears didn't give up, however, and thwarted the Wildcats for the rest of the game. Foody came up with two great back-to-back saves over the top in the 27th and 29th minutes to keep Woodside from scoring. The M-A defense also came up strong against 5 Woodside corner kicks in the first half. In the second half, the Bears put a bit more pressure on the Wildcats. Harrier was taken down in the box in the 57th minute, which set up a penalty kick for the Bears. Harpell calmly placed the ball just inside the left post, beating Woodside's keeper for the equalizer. M-A and Woodside battled the remainder of the half with increased intensity, but the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

M-A's strong finish earned the Bears a #7 seed in the Division I CCS Playoffs. Come out and cheer on the Bears as they host #11 seed Alisal at M-A on Wednesday, February 25 at 6 p.m.
