Emergency Fundraiser - Steve Ready, a former teacher at M-A for many years, and now IVP at Sequoia, welcomed his new baby, Amaryillis Juniper Ready, into the world last Wednesday! Unfortunately, five hours after the baby arrived, the Ready's apartment building in San Francisco went up in flames. Sadly, everything that the family didn't have with them at the hospital was lost. The M-A staff has already begun to care for and help the Ready family. The staff would like to share the link to a funding site that was created for the Ready's and encourage the M-A community to join in helping them during this very hard time. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated!

NEW EVENT! THE M-A PARENT EDUCATION SERIES
Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be: An Antidote to the College Admission Mania with Frank Bruni, New York Times Columnist and Bestselling Author
Monday, April 6, 7 - 8:30 p.m.
M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC)
Please register for tickets.
Over the last few decades, Americans have turned college admissions into a stressful and occasionally devastating rite of passage, preceded by test prep, tutors, all kinds of rankings and a conviction among too many young people that their futures will be determined and their worth established by which schools say "yes" and which say "no."
That belief is wrong. And in Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be, Bruni explains why, giving students and their parents a new outlook on this brutal, deeply flawed competition and a path out of the anxiety that it provokes.
Frank Bruni has been an Op-Ed columnist for The New York Times since June 2011, focusing on a range of subjects including higher education. In two decades at The Times, he has also been the paper's chief restaurant critic, its Rome bureau chief, a White House correspondent, and the lead reporter covering George W. Bush's 2000 presidential campaign. He is the author of two best-selling books, the memoir Born Round and Ambling into History, a chronicle of Bush's rise to the presidency. He has appeared frequently as a commentator on CNN, MSNBC, and other networks.
M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the M-A PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. This event is open to parents, students, faculty/staff and community members. Simultaneous Spanish translation will be available.

Teenage Risky Behaviors
Vaping Reality: New Electronic Device (E-Cigarettes) and Emerging Nicotine Products with Alissa Ralston, Project Director, Tobacco-Free Youth Project
Thursday, February 12, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Sequoia Union High School District Office, Birch Room
480 James Avenue, Redwood City
An alarming number of young people who have never used conventional cigarettes are now using electronic "vaping" devices. Student use of these products now surpasses the use of conventional cigarettes. These devices are easy to hide and are often used with other drugs. Come learn how young people are targeted to experiment with these and other "non-conventional cigarette" nicotine products and why we should all be concerned.
Alissa Ralston has been active in tobacco education for the past 20 years. She has served as site coordinator for several Tobacco Use Prevention and Education programs and has been the Project Director for the Tobacco Free Youth Project at Bay Area Community Resources since 1999. Her current focus is trainings on emerging nicotine delivery products such as e-cigarettes.
Distracted Driving with Impact Teen Drivers, California Highway Patrol
Thursday, March 12, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Sequoia Union High School District Office, Birch Room 480 James Avenue, Redwood City Please register for this event at Eventbrite. Automobile collisions are the leading cause of death for our nation's teens. The overwhelming majority of these crashes are caused by inexperience or distractions, not thrill-seeking or deliberate risk-taking. Teen drivers are at the highest risk; the crash rate for 16 years olds is four times that of adults. In this workshop, you will learn strategies to keep your teens safe on the road. Impact Teen Drivers is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reversing the pervasive yet preventable crisis of "distracted driving." Impact's mission is to change the culture of teen driving.
SUHSD Parent Education Series events are free and open to SUHSD parents, faculty, staff, and community members. This mini-series is sponsored by the Sequoia Healthcare District and the Sequoia Union High School District.

Weekly Sports Wrap-Up
Girls JV Basketball - The team split their games this week ending their undefeated season but adding another win to their record. In the much anticipated game against also undefeated Hillsdale, the Bears had foul trouble early on. That didn't stop the offense and M-A stayed within a point of Hillsdale with the first half ending in a tied score. Delilah Kline hit two 3-pointers and had a total of 9 points. Maddie King had 7 points and Kyra Sheeper and Natasha Auer both added 4. Both teams were aggressive on the court but missed shots and 2 players fouling out were too much for the Bears offense to overcome leading to a 27-31 loss. In a re-match with Sequoia, the Bears were unstoppable from the start. M-A was well in control at the half with a score of 31-2 allowing all members of the team to have lots of time on the court. Kline led the scoring with 14 points and Jaimie Kirkpatrick had a solid showing with 5. Emily Roberts hit her first 3-pointer of the season while Bailey Lentz and Sheeper each came up with a basket. Ashley Tiznado and Angela Langhi were key factors on defense and also each added a point while Kyra Richardson had good blocks and a save. The Bears ended with a decisive 38-18 win. The Bears have their last two games of the season this week taking on Burlingame on Tuesday, February 10 at 4:30 p.m. and a re-match against Woodside on Thursday, February 12 at 3:15 p.m., both games at home.
Girls Varsity Basketball - The Bears won both league games this week to take sole possession of first place in the PAL South. Wednesday was the biggest game of the year to date - M-A at PAL South co-leader Hillsdale. The first half was a defensive struggle. The Knights disrupted the Bears passing, limiting M-A's potent low post game to 4 first half points. The Bears pressured the Knights' three-point shooters, holding them scoreless from outside the arc. M-A's Ilana Baer scored 7 of her 12 points in the first half to give the Bears a 4 point first half lead. In the second half both team returned to form with the Bears posts Greer Hoyem and Ofa Sili combining for 14 second half points and the Knights hitting 3 pointers. In the fourth quarter, with the Bears ahead by 5, M-A went on a pair of 5-0 runs keyed by Sili, I. Bear and Naomi Baer to put the game away, 44-32. Also scoring for the Bears were Carly McLanahan, Maddy Kim, and Megan Sparrow.
On Friday at M-A, the team defeated Sequoia, 58-39. M-A opened a 32-13 first half lead with senior captain Sarah Howell hitting 3 three-pointers and posts Sili and Hoyem combining for 14 points in the paint. The half ended with junior Sally Carlson tipping a pass and converting on a fast break in the final seconds. Sequoia rallied back in the third, but M-A recovered in the fourth with I. Baer scoring all 8 of her points. McLanahan had 8 points and N. Baer added 7 points and 5 assists on the night.
The Bears finish their PAL regular season next week with two home games. On Tuesday, February 10 at 6 p.m. the Bears look to preserve their first place standing versus the rapidly rising Burlingame Panthers. On Thursday, February 12 at 6:15 p.m., M-A celebrates its seniors before facing Woodside.
Boys Varsity Basketball - The Bears came up big in two must-win games by beating both Hillsdale and Sequoia. The wins put M-A in great position to make the PAL playoffs and a better seed in the subsequent CCS playoffs. In the first game, in a battle of 5-3 PAL South teams, M-A moved into sole possession of fourth place with a 49-37 win over Hillsdale. Hillsdale hit 3 treys in the first quarter to hold a slim 1-point lead after the first quarter. M-A tightened its defense and allowed only 3 more treys the rest of the game while driving hard to the basket for many of its points. M-A's center Ryan Cole went to work in the second quarter, scoring 7 to help M-A to a 5-point lead at halftime. Danny LaPorte's 5 points in the decisive third quarter led to a 12-point lead going into the fourth quarter, and M-A played even with Hillsdale in the fourth quarter to garner the 12-point win. Cole led the Bears with 14 points on 5-11 shooting, 4-5 from the free throw line, and 4 rebounds. Lucas Fioretti scored in every quarter, totaling 9 points for the Bears. On Friday, in front of raucous and energizing sixth-man nerds, M-A came up with a huge win over first place Sequoia, 55-49, and kept its hopes alive for a third place finish in the PAL South. The Cherokees were undefeated in league play coming into the game, with its closest game being a 3-point win over the Bears three weeks ago. The Bears were hungry for revenge, and even though down by 11 in the first quarter, clawed their way back to within 3 at halftime. After giving up 23 points in the first quarter, M-A held Sequoia to 7 points in the second quarter, and followed that up with more sterling defense in the third quarter, giving up only 4 points. Midway through the third quarter, the Bears took their first lead since a very early 5-3 lead on Eric Norton's bucket, going up 33-32. The Bears expanded their lead to 6 at 45-39 in the middle of the fourth quarter, only to see the Cherokees knot the score at 47 with a minute to go. Blake Henry then hit a jumper from the foul line to give the Bears the lead for good. Besides more excellent defense, the Bears hit all 6 free throws in that last minute to keep Sequoia at bay. The Bears made a season-high 21 of 24 free throws in the contest. The win keeps the Bears in sole possession of fourth place in the PAL South, and they can move to third place with a win at current third placeholder Burlingame on Tuesday, February 10 at 5:30 p.m. The Bears finish the regular season at home (Senior Night!) versus Woodside, Thursday, February 12, at 7:45 p.m. as the finale of quad night. Come out and celebrate Senior Night for the Girls Varsity, Boys Varsity, and Cheerleaders.
Boys Varsity Soccer - On Wednesday, the Bears defeated Half Moon Bay at home 7-0. First goal was scored by Mario Rodriguez off a nice through ball from Kyle Smith. Second goal was scored by a Jesus Ortega header off of Patrick Quinn's direct kick. Efrain Garcia scored the 4th goal, but Ortega scored 5 of the 7 goals for M-A. Wesley Fischer did a great job in goal. On Friday, the Bears beat El Camino, 8-1.
Girls JV Soccer - On Tuesday M-A hosted San Mateo for the second match of their series, winning 3-1. Once again San Mateo was unable to field 11 players and the Bears were never seriously challenged with most of the deep M-A roster seeing playing time. Ten minutes into the match Mara Cavallero opened the scoring dribbling right through the center and beating the keeper. At 14 minutes Teresa Amor served a corner kick from the right corner that landed for Joanna Vollrath loitering in front of the goal who made sure it found the back of the net to make it 2-0. San Mateo never gave up though and at 23 minutes sliced through the M-A defense at midfield and sprinted through 1-on-1, scoring to make it 2-1. The Bears refocused and in the second half Vollrath restored the margin, scoring to make it 3-1, from the left point with Sophie Lamb and Grace Brieger assisting at the 63 minute mark.
On Thursday the Bears went coastal, visiting Half Moon Bay and posting a comfortable 7-0 win. Nessa Fakrai put the Bears on the score board just 7 minutes into the match popping the ball into the net during a scrum in the goal area from a corner kick. Sam Jeffrey tallied the next goal at 15 minutes from a right wing cross by Amor. At 22 minutes, Isabel Regonini collected a spilled save by the Cougar keeper and buried it to make it 3-0. Megan St. John added her name to the scoring list at 29 minutes on another pin-point cross from the right wing by Amor. By halftime the Bears had ten shots on goal to HMB's 1, and the second half was just as entertaining for the handful of M-A supporters that made the journey over the hill. Margaret Chan wasted no time making it 5-0 racing in on the left point. It was soon 6-0 on a quick sequence of passes from Amor to Laurel Patrick and then to Lamb who also attacked from the left point to find the net. The left side proved magical as Dorothy Aldridge capped off the scoring with a nice low drive that beat the keeper tucking inside the right far post. HMB managed two shots in the remaining time but the Bears kept the clean sheet and finished the night with a 7-0 scoreline.
Next week, the Bears (9-0-1) will host Aragon on Tuesday, February 10 and travel north to Carlmont on Thursday, February 12. Both matches kick off at 5:30 p.m.
Girls Varsity Soccer - The team handily beat an outmatched San Mateo side on Tuesday at home by a final score of 7-0. It took the Bears about 10 minutes to figure out how to overcome the high trap that San Mateo employed at the outset of the game, but in the 11th minute it was team assist leader, Annie Harrier, who broke free of the defense and fed the ball to trailing Josephine Cotto for the first goal. Just a minute later, it was defender Jordan Olesen who made an overlapping run down the right side to find Julia Moreton who finished from the left to put M-A up 2-0. Shortly after coming off the bench, defender Ellie Purpura made a similar overlapping run down the right wing, this time to set up Molly Briggs who finished down the middle for the Bears' third goal in the 28th minute. In the 32nd minute, Purpura was taken down in the box to set up a penalty kick, which Purpura put away with a hard shot to the upper middle of the net. The fifth and final goal of the half came in the 34th minute of the match when Moreton crossed a ball to Briggs who then hammered it in for her second goal of the game. In the second half, M-A moved its defenders up top and put its strikers in the back. Just minutes into the second half Kelsey Reed sent a beautiful ball over the top of the defenders that found Olesen down the right wing, who then scored her first goal of the season with a high shot over the keeper's head in the 42nd minute of the match. Defender Kasey Love, playing at right forward, took a ball down toward the end line and crossed it back to Margaret Child who scored with a beautifully placed ball just inside the left post to put the Bears up by the final score of 7-0.
On Thursday, the team won its second straight PAL match at Half Moon Bay by a score of 3-0. The Bears scored early when Carolyn Hunt-Gonzalez and Harrier teamed up for the first goal just minutes into the game. M-A built from the middle when Reed passed to Hunt-Gonzalez who then fed a beautiful ball through to Harrier which she finished to put the Bears on the board, 1-0. The Bears continued to play a possession game for the rest of the half, but it wasn't until the last five minutes that M-A earned its second goal. Reed fed the ball to Katie Guenin who then took the ball down the right wing and crossed to Child, who finished for the goal. Guenin has been sidelined since the opening game of league play when she suffered a broken collar bone and her return provided a spark for the Bears. In the second half, Cotto earned her team-leading 7th goal of the year when she netted a hard left-footed shot from the middle to put M-A up 3-0. The win moves M-A to 5-3-2 (fourth place) in league play with two tough matches ahead next week against Aragon on Tuesday, February 10 at 4 p.m. at M-A, and against Carlmont on Thursday, February 12 as the Bears fight for a spot in the postseason.
