Thursday, February 12, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Sequoia Union High School District Office, Birch Room
480 James Avenue, Redwood City
An alarming number of young people who have never used conventional cigarettes are now using electronic "vaping" devices. Student use of these products now surpasses the use of conventional cigarettes. These devices are easy to hide and are often used with other drugs. Come learn how young people are targeted to experiment with these and other "non-conventional cigarette" nicotine products and why we should all be concerned.
Alissa Ralston has been active in tobacco education for the past 20 years. She has served as site coordinator for several Tobacco Use Prevention and Education programs and has been the Project Director for the Tobacco Free Youth Project at Bay Area Community Resources since 1999. Teen drivers are at the highest risk; the crash rate for 16 years olds is four times that of adults. In this workshop, you will learn strategies to keep your teens safe on the road. Impact Teen Drivers is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reversing the pervasive yet preventable crisis of "distracted driving." Impact's mission is to change the culture of teen driving.

Weekly Sports Wrap-Up
Girls JV Basketball - The Bears added two more wins this week, remaining undefeated in league play. At home against San Mateo, the Bears played strong the entire game. Solid defense by Emily Roberts and rebounds by Kyra Richardson, Bailey Lentz and Ashley Tiznado allowed Delilah Kline to score 19 points followed by Jaimie Kirkpatrick with 12. Maddie King and Angela Langhi each added a basket. The Bears held San Mateo to 2 points in the second half and coasted into a 41-12 win. Friday's game against Carlmont was a very different match-up. The Bears started early with a quick basket by Natasha Auer and a three-point shot by Kline. Although the Bears led consistently, Carlmont fought back hard and kept the game within a few points in what turned out to be the biggest defensive battle of the season. Tiznado's rebounds and Kyra Sheeper's ball handling set the stage for Kline and Auer to each score 8 points, with Sheeper adding 4, Tiznado contributing 2 and King sinking a free throw. Despite some rough moments on the court and fouls on both sides, the grittiness of the Bears won out, leading to a 23-20 victory. The Bears travel to Hillsdale on Wednesday, February 4 for a 4 p.m. start and are back home Friday, February 6 against Sequoia at 3:15 p.m.
Girls Varsity Basketball - The Bears cruised to two easy PAL victories this week and improved to 3rd in Friday's Daily News ranking. On Wednesday, the Bears defeated San Mateo 54-28 at M-A. In a first quarter where M-A had trouble sinking baskets, Carly McLanahan gave the Bears a lift when she hit the first of her 3 three-pointers in the closing moments. In the second quarter, Megan Sparrow led a Bears defense lock-down, while Naomi Baer had 8 of her 10 points, increasing the M-A lead to 14. In the third quarter Greer Hoyem had 7 of her 13 points to push the M-A lead to 25. Nine Bears scored on the night.
On Friday at Carlmont, the team won 55-37. Hoyem and Ilana Baer (who led M-A in scoring with 12 each), combined for 11 first quarter points as the Bears took a 15-7 lead. In the second quarter, the Bears welcomed back their leading scorer, Ofa Sili, who missed the prior 5 games with an injury. Sili immediately scored and the Bears blew the game open with a 15-0 run later in the second quarter. The Scots upped their intensity in the second half to close the gap a bit, but Annalisa Crowe made a three-pointer and Carolyn Watson added a bucket to put the game away. On Wednesday, February 4 at 5:30 p.m. the Bears travel to face PAL South co-leader Hillsdale for the most anticipated league game of the year. On Friday, February 6 the team returns to M-A to host Sequoia at 6:15 p.m.
Boys Varsity Basketball - The Bears (5-3 in PAL, 11-9 overall) split their two league road games this week. In the first game, M-A lost at San Mateo, 41-34. The Bears never seemed to get out of first gear and played catchup the entire game. Each time they got close or tied the game, the Bearcats would subsequently pull ahead. Blake Henry and Eric Norton led the Bears with 8 points each. Against Carlmont, by contrast, M-A started the game in top gear and played a flawless first half in burying the Scots, 48-11 at halftime, on their way to a 66-27 rout. The Bears notched a season-high point total for one quarter in the first quarter with 22 points. They then topped that in the second quarter with 26 points. Tim Andersen had all of his 14 points in that 2nd quarter, hitting 4 of 5 three-point shots. Lucas Fioretti and Henry were also in double-figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. M-A returns home this week, hosting Hillsdale (also 5-3 in PAL) on Wednesday, February 4 at 5:30 p.m., and Sequoia on Friday, February 6 at 7:45 p.m. Come be part of the 6th man and cheer the boys on to victory!
Boys Varsity Soccer - The Bears had two league victories this week. On Wednesday, the Bears beat Woodside 4-2. Goals were scored by Mario Rodriguez and Juan Gastelum in the first half, which ended with a score of 2-1. Rodriguez and Jesus Ortega each scored goals in the second half with Woodside only scoring once. On Friday, the team hosted Carlmont. Kyle Smith headed in the first goal off a free kick to put M-A on the board less than 15 minutes into the game. Next, Alex Gallo scored on a free kick just outside the box after Smith's drive ended with a Carlmont yellow card foul just outside the box. Later in the first half, Ortega completed a one-on-one opportunity created by a through ball from Smith. Starting the second half up 3-0, M-A scored again on a shot from Ortega that was deflected by the goalie and finished by Smith. Carlmont scored 1 goal in the last minute to end the game with a great 4-1 win.
Girls JV Soccer - On Tuesday, M-A hosted Woodside under the lights for a 1-nil win which saw the Bears take sole possession of 1st place. The evening started with both teams tied for the top spot and the match was guaranteed to be fast paced and closely contested. Both teams traded early chances as they probed the defenses but neither team figured out the puzzle and the first half ended in stalemate. The second half started with Woodside putting on the pressure but the Bears settled in and began to counter. A direct free kick at the 53rd minute provided the first good opportunity, but sailed over the cross bar. The home supporters went wild when at 59 minutes, Joanna Vollrath scored from a close-range scramble in front of the Woodside net to make it 1-nil. With 15 minutes remaining Woodside pressed hard in an attempt to equalize, but the Bear defense dug in and sealed the victory.
On Thursday, the Bears traveled to Burlingame to take a 4-2 victory over the Panthers. M-A quickly found themselves in a hole as Burlingame jumped to 0-1 lead in the 2nd minute. The Bears got back to work quickly and started to return pressure on the Burlingame defense. At 12 minutes, speedy Mara Cavallero earned the Bears a penalty kick as she was tripped racing up the right wing into the penalty area, about to turn the corner on the defender. Alissa McNerney took the kick and buried it in the net low and left, beating the keeper's outstretched hands and leveling the match at 1-1. At 19 minutes the Bears would take the lead when Teresa Amor served in a floating cross from the right edge of the area which Grace Brieger headed home to make it 2-1. The two teams continued to trade chances but Burlingame pulled level at 31 minutes on a shot from the left point which squeezed inside the right post making it 2-2 at the half. The Bears put the heat on in the second half and a flurry of attacks in front of the Burlingame goal resulted in an own-goal, putting the Bears back on top 3-2 at the 39 minute mark. Three minutes later the Bears scored on a quick sequence that saw the ball move from McNerney in center out to Vollrath on the left wing and back to Brieger at the left point who drove it home to make it 4-2. Burlingame tried to climb back into the contest but the Bear defense did what they have been doing all season long and kept the attacks at bay. The score was 4-2 at the final whistle.
This week, the Bears (7-0-1) will host San Mateo on Tuesday, February 3 and then travel over the hill to Half Moon Bay on Thursday, February 5. Both matches kick off at 5:30 p.m.
Girls Varsity Soccer - The Bears had a rough week, losing two tough PAL matches to league leader Woodside (1-4) on Tuesday and second-place Burlingame (1-2) on Thursday. M-A fell to undefeated Woodside, but spent the first 34 minutes with the teams battling for possession with an even split. The Bears had a few early chances, but could not capitalize and then it was Woodside with two quick goals in the last 5 minutes of the first half. In the second half, the Bears fought hard and managed to get off 6 shots, including two great chances when Carolyn Hunt-Gonzalez hit one over the top from just in front of the goal in the 48th minute and another when a free kick from Taryn Harpell hit the crossbar in the 58th minute. Annie Harrier was fouled from behind in the box, setting up a penalty kick. Harpell calmly placed the ball in the left corner of the net and caught the Woodside keeper diving to the opposite side. However, Woodside netted two more goals in the second half to take the victory 4-1.
On Thursday afternoon, the Bears took on the Burlingame Panthers. Unfortunately, Burlingame scored 2 goals in a 5-minute stretch to put the Bears down 2-0 midway through the first half. The Bears fought to get back into the game; Julia Moreton scored for the Bears in the 24th minute when she was able to take advantage of a deflection after a Panther defender miss-cleared the ball. Keeper Jacqueline Foody had 4 saves in the first half, though the shot tally at the half was fairly even at 7-6 in favor of the Panthers. In the second half, the Bears outshot the Panthers 8-1, but still could not find the back of the next. Foody made a spectacular save to keep the Panthers off the board in the second half. Sarah McLeod, playing limited minutes due to illness, gave the Bears their best scoring chance late in the second half, but the final score remained 2-1 Burlingame. With the loss, M-A drops to 3-3-2 in PAL and 6-4-3 overall. M-A faces San Mateo on Tuesday, February 3 at 4 p.m. at home and then travels to Half Moon Bay on Thursday, February 5 at 4 p.m.
