Bear print Stanford/M-A Teen Sleep Program
The Stanford/M-A Teen Sleep Program is in it's eighth year. A group of M-A juniors is creating publicity for the "Drowsy Driving is Red Alert" message and will play host to Stanford students when they visit in late February. The Stanford students will visit freshmen classrooms to present facts about teen sleep and provide strategies to improve sleep. An abundance of research has shown that more sleep yields a better teen life, academically, physically, and psychologically. Anyone, particularly freshman parents, interested in helping out with this worthwhile project can contact Maggie Betsock at 650-814-7160.

The Well-Balanced Student

Denise Pope, PhD, Stanford University, Challenge Success

 Tuesday, February 3

7 - 8:30 p.m. in the M-A PAC

Please come to an outstanding presentation by Dr. Denise Pope, nationally and internationally recognized educator, award-winning lecturer at Stanford University, and co-founder of Challenge Success.

Today's high-pressure, fast-paced culture can interfere with healthy child development. When we are too focused on test scores, performance, and grades, we may deny kids the time and energy they need to effectively tackle the demanding work of growing up. This workshop examines the tensions that can occur between students, parents, and educators over issues such as homework, grades, and the culture of competition. Research-based strategies to create healthier home and school environments will be shared. In this presentation, you will learn:
  • How students cope with the academic pressure they face
  • How to reduce academic stress without sacrificing achievement or engagement
  • Strategies to increase resilience, creativity, and well-being for your child

Tickets are going fast, so sign up today at Eventbrite. SUHSD parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members are welcome! Spanish interpretation will be available.

M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the M-A PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. This event is also made possible by a grant from the La Entrada PTA.

Weekly Sports Wrap-Up

Bear print Girls JV Basketball The Bears added 2 more wins to their undefeated record in league play this week. Against Capuchino, the Bears captured an early lead which they held throughout the game. Seven players contributed to the scoring led by Delilah Kline with 23 points. Natasha Auer was solid on the inside with 12 points. Maddie King, Angela Langhi and Ashely Tiznado each added a basket. Jaimie Kirkpatrick capped it off with 4 points and 3 assists, leading to a final score of 48-24. Against Sequoia, the Bears dominated the court leading by 16 after the first period. Emily Roberts drew cheers from the crowd with a buzzer beating basket to end the first half. Bailey Lentz and Kyra Richardson worked hard defensively. Leading scorer Kline had 21 points. King stepped up her game with 12 and Kyra Sheeper contributed 6 points for a 51-13 victory. Every player had time on the court and the JV girls continue to demonstrate great teamwork as they remain a force to be reckoned with! The Bears take on Aragon Wednesday, January 21 at 4 p.m. and Woodside on Friday, January 23 at 3:15 p.m.

Bear print Girls Varsity BasketballOn Wednesday, the girls narrowly lost at Capuchino 54-53. The Bears jumped out to an 11-4 lead midway through the first quarter with Greer Hoyem scoring 8 of her team high 17 points. However, the Mustangs roared back to take an 18 point lead at the end of the third quarter. With 35 seconds remaining, the Bears closed the gap to 1 point on 2 free throws from Maddy Kim, but the Mustangs protected the ball and held on for the win.

On Friday night, the girls defeated Sequoia 67-41. M-A opened a 24 to 6 first quarter lead and never looked back. Hoyem again started fast with 12 of her team high 20 points in the first quarter. Sarah Howell hit 3 three-pointers in the first half. The Lady Cherokees mounted a third quarter comeback but Ilana Baer had 9 fourth quarter points to keep the game out of reach. The Bears debuted in the San Jose Mercury News poll ranked 13th. This week the Bears travel to Aragon on Wednesday, January 21 for a 5:30 p.m. game and to Woodside on Friday, January 23 for a 6:15 p.m. game.

Bear print Boys Varsity BasketballM-A split 2 road games this past week to move to 2-2 in PAL play, 8-8 overall. Wednesday, the Bears travelled to Capuchino - Millbrae and came away with a 40-31 win. Down 3 at the half, the Bears clamped down on the defensive end, limiting Capuchino to only 11 second points. The 31 points by Capuchino were the least given up by M-A this season. Eight Bears scored in a balanced attack, led by Christian Fioretti with 11 points. Blake Henry and Ryan Cole garnered 6 rebounds each. Friday, at a loud and packed gym at Sequoia, M-A lost a high-scoring well-played thriller, 60-57. The back-and-forth game featured intense play throughout, with Sequoia putting on an outside-shooting display in the 4th quarter to overcome the Bears 2-point advantage heading into the final quarter. The Bears had a chance to send the game to overtime, but a desperate 3-point attempt rimmed out. M-A has lost its two PAL games by a combined 4 points. Cole's 15 points and Lucas Fioretti's 14 points led the Bears. Eric Norton and Christian had 6 rebounds each. M-A hosts Aragon on Wednesday, January 21 at 5:30 p.m. On Friday, January 23 at 7:45 p.m., M-A travels to Woodside, capping off a quad night there.

Bear print Girls JV SoccerM-A posted another 7-nil win last Tuesday when the Bears hosted Half Moon Bay. Mara Cavallero started the scoring in the 3rd minute, followed quickly by Holly Pounders to give the Bears a quick 2-nil lead. Isabel Regonini soon tallied a 3rd goal and although HMB continued to play with dedication, the wind had clearly gone from their sails. In the second half, M-A continued to work the ball from side to side and up the wings, cycling through the roster of players. Just 2 minutes in, Pounders scored her second goal of the night. In a display of persistence, Sarah Tiemann, whose first 3 shots were blocked, scored on a half-volley to bring it to 5-nil. The defense did a great job shutting down counter attacks, giving the M-A goalkeepers a rather easy day. At the 65th minute Megan St. John had a tap-in on a ball that fizzed to her across the goal mouth for 6-nil. To cap the night at 7-nil, Ella Missan converted a penalty kick given for a meaty kicking foul in the 70th minute.

On Thursday, the Bears traveled to Aragon to play out a nil-nil draw in a match that had to be called for darkness. The Bears had the majority of the chances with seven quality shots in the first half that were saved or just missed the target, and 3 in the 15 minute long second half. M-A goalkeepers Rosa Kurtz and Bailey Schroeder were never tested as the Bears' back line defended with dedication.

The Bears hope to find their scoring touch again when they take on Carlmont at home next Tuesday, January 20 at 5:30 p.m.

Bear print Girls Varsity SoccerM-A overpowered Half Moon Bay 6-0 on Tuesday at home. Sarah McLeod got the Bears on the board first with an unassisted goal in the 15th minute. Carolyn Hunt-Gonzalez initially fed the ball to McLeod, who then took a shot from the right flank. The initial shot popped back out to McLeod off a deflection from a defender, and she calmly finished for her first of 2 goals on the afternoon. Josephine Cotto added a second unassisted goal for the Bears. Cotto also finished her own shot after her initial attempt, which was fed by Margaret Child, bounced off the post and back to Cotto's feet. The Bears outshot the Cougars 12-0 for a 2-0 half time lead. McLeod picked off a ball from the defense in the opening minute of the second half and took it straight to the net where she finished for her second and M-A's third goal of the game. Next, Annie Harrier fed teammate Amanda Wiseman a beautiful ball over the middle that Wiseman placed in the back of the net. Molly Briggs scored a goal less than a minute after entering the game when Harrier sent a great cross from the right for Briggs to tap in just inside the back left post. In the 60th minute, Harrier and Wiseman teamed up again when Harrier intercepted a miss-clear from the Cougars keeper and sent it across the goal to a waiting Wiseman who scored her second goal of the game.

The team started slowly against Aragon on Thursday afternoon, but finished strong to win 4-1 at the Dons' home field. Kelsey Reed and Julia Moreton teamed up for the first goal when Reed collected a ball at midfield and directed Moreton to take an inside run on her defender. Moreton seamlessly picked up the ball on the run from the left wing and took it straight down the middle where she beat the keeper 1v1 with her well-placed shot. Cotto made a significant contribution - firing off 3 shots and scoring in the 34th minute when McLeod pushed a ball through to Cotto in the middle that she blasted into the net. In the last minute of the first half, a miscue by the M-A defense allowed the Dons into the match. A ball sent forward by the Dons was shielded by an M-A defender, blocking the keeper's view. The Dons' capitalized when a forward intercepted the ball and easily finished to make the score 2-1 at the half. In the second half, Harrier continued her selfless ways and notched her 7th and 8th assists on the year by setting up her teammates for 2 more goals. Later, Harrier collected the ball off a bad trap from an Aragon defender. She sent the ball across the middle to the waiting left foot of Miranda Simes who scored the Bears' third goal of the match. Less than five minutes later, Harrier fed the ball to McLeod, who deftly dribbled up the middle and beat the keeper for the Bears' fourth and final goal of the match.

With the win, the Bears move to 3-1 in league play and 6-2-1 overall. The Bears next play at home against Carlmont on Tuesday, January 20 at 4 p.m. The Bears then travel to Hillsdale on Thursday, January 22.
