The Well-Balanced Student

Denise Pope, PhD, Stanford University, Challenge Success

Tuesday, February 3

7 - 8:30 p.m. in the M-A PAC

Please come to an outstanding presentation by Dr. Denise Pope, nationally and internationally recognized educator, award-winning lecturer at Stanford University, and co-founder of Challenge Success, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the well-being, engagement, and integrity of students.

Today's high-pressure, fast-paced culture can interfere with healthy child development. When we are too focused on test scores, performance, and grades, we may deny kids the time and energy they need to effectively tackle the demanding work of growing up. This workshop examines the tensions that can occur between students, parents, and educators over issues such as homework, grades, and the culture of competition. Research-based strategies to create healthier home and school environments will be shared. In this presentation, you will learn:
  • How students cope with the academic pressure they face
  • How to reduce academic stress without sacrificing achievement or engagement
  • Strategies to increase resilience, creativity, and well-being for your child

Please register at EventbriteM-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the M-A PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. This event is also made possible by a grant from the La Entrada PTA. For more information, contact Charlene Margot, The Parent Education Series, Founder/Program Director, at cmargot@csmconsulting.net or 650-868-0590.

Weekly Sports Wrap-Up

Bear print Girls JV Basketball The JV girls basketball team had an active schedule during Winter break, starting with a win (46-28) against Presentation at home. The Bears came out strong and led throughout the game. Delilah Kline and Maddie King led the scoring with 11 points each and Natasha Auer contributed 10. Ashley Tiznado had an assist and 2 steals.

Next, the Bears had the 3-day Newark Invitational Tournament. Game 1 against Monte Vista was a tight match from beginning to end. The Bears trailed by a few points throughout the game but never stopped responding to Monte Vista's baskets. Jaimie Kirkpatrick had a great showing with 12 points followed by Angela Langi with 8 points. The Bears ultimately lost (40-45). Game 2 against Newark was a completely different match-up. The Bears grabbed an early lead which they held the entire game. Kline was a dominant force, scoring 30 points with Auer contributing 14 and Kirkpatrick 10. Kyra Sheeper added 6 points and Bailey Lentz, Emily Roberts and Langi each had 2 resulting in a final score of 68-30. In the conciliation championship game against San Ramon, the Bears struggled to keep pace. Seven players contributed to the effort including Kline with 23 points. In the final few minutes, the Bears were within 3 points but couldn't pull in front, leading to a 43-48 loss.

In their final pre-season game, the girls took on Palo Alto. The Bears dominated from the start, led by Kline with 10 points and King with 8. Auer and Kirkpatrick each came up with 7 points, Tiznado had 4, and newcomer Kyra Richardson scored two baskets. The Bears won (44-25). With a pre-season record of 8 and 3, the JV girls are ready to take on Mills in the first regular season game on Wednesday, January 7 at 4 p.m.

Bear print Girls Varsity BasketballThe Bears played 5 games over the break, finishing with a huge win over Palo Alto. In the first game, the girls lost to Presentation (44-33) at M-A. The game began as a defensive struggle and was tied at 5 after the first three minutes. However, Presentation went on a 14-0 run and led 30-11 at the half. In the third quarter the Bears rallied back led by Ofa Sili and Naomi Baer who both had 10 points on the night. With 3 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Presentation's lead had narrowed to 9 points, but the Panthers made their free throws and put the game away.

Next, the Bears participated in the Newark Memorial Cougars Classic Tournament. In the first game the girls blew out Balboa (San Francisco) 48-15. The Bears' youth was on display with freshman Carly McLanahan and Greer Hoyem combining for 13 first half points. In the second half, the Bears' defense held the Bucs to 4 points while M-A guards Annalisa Crowe and Maddy Kim hit 3-pointers to put the game away. In the second game the Bears lost to Newark 55-52. After dominating the paint in the first period the Bears' shooting went cold, and the Cougars roared back to take a 3 point lead at the half. In the third quarter, M-A re-took the lead with posts Megan Sparrow and Sili scoring 9 of their combined 23 points on the night. The lead changed many times until the Bears missed a 3-point shot at the buzzer which would have tied the game. In the final game, the girls lost to Monte Vista (53-44). M-A took a 14-7 lead in the first period but the Mustangs took over the game. The Bears mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter, closing the gap to 8, but the Mustangs made their free throws and put the game away. Sparrow was the M-A Player of the Tournament.

On Saturday, the girls defeated Palo Alto 43-36 at M-A. Early in the game, Baer scored the first 2 of her 8 points to give the Bears the lead. By the half M-A led by 5 points with Sparrow and Sili scoring in the paint and from the 3-point arc. In the second half the Vikings attempted to come back by shooting 3-pointers and stepping up their press. The Bears had answers for both, limiting the Vikings to a single 3-point conversion and drawing fouls from the Palo Alto press. Early in the fourth quarter, while in double bonus, the Bears scored 12 points from the line to put the game away.

The Bears open league play on Wednesday, January 7 at 5:30 p.m. at Mills. On Friday, January 9 they face Carlmont at M-A at 6:15 p.m. On Saturday, January 10, the girls wrap up non-league play with at 2:30 p.m. game against Sacred Heart at home.

Bear print Boys Varsity BasketballThe Bears won 3 of their final 4 pre-season games to garner a 6-6 record and become CCS-playoff eligible heading into the PAL season. After Christmas, M-A traveled to the Monterey Peninsula to battle Carmel and Pacific Grove.  At Carmel, M-A led from start to finish to beat the Padres 45-36. Lucas Fioretti led the scoring with 16 points, while Ryan Cole added 12. Whittaker Jellins grabbed 7 rebounds to go with his 8 points. The next night, M-A played its best game of the season in beating an aggressive Pacific Grove team, 53-39. Down 15-8 after a quarter, the Bears scored 8 straight points to begin Q2 and get back in the game. The team began a 3/4 court press in Q2 until the end of the game that resulted in holding the Breakers (4-2) to 9, 8, and 7 points in the final 3 quarters. Tim Andersen, back after nursing a left-wrist injury for a month, showed no signs of the layoff by leading the Bears with 15 points, including 3 3-pointers. The Bears had their best free-throw shooting night, hitting 18/23 (78%), and 10 Bears scored in a well-balanced scoring effort.

Last Friday afternoon, M-A traveled to Jefferson - Daly City and had a big game. That is, the big men led the charge in overwhelming Jefferson, 63-36. Jellins and Cole had 12 points each and Blake Henry added 10. M-A put the game to rest with a 17-2 3Q run. All 11 Bears scored in this game. In the final pre-season game, M-A hosted Half Moon Bay (HMB) in a rematch of the Burlingame tournament semi-final. The undefeated Cougars (11-0) beat the Bears again in a hard-fought defensive battle, 40-26. The Bears got within 5 on two occasions in the second half, only to have HMB pull away at the end. As some consolation, the Bears have held HMB to its 2 lowest point totals of the season. Andersen led the Bears with 7 points and 6 rebounds, with Cole getting 7 tough boards inside. This Wednesday, January 7 the Bears begin the PAL season, hosting Mills at 5:30 p.m. On Friday, January 9, M-A hosts quad night against Carlmont, with boys varsity capping off the night with a 7:45 p.m. start. Come out, be part of the 6th-man section, and cheer all 4 teams that night.
