Holiday Stress and Student Support Services - As we enter the holiday season, it's important to remember that the holidays can be both joyous and stressful for many students and families. College application deadlines, family holiday expectations, and semester finals can add additional layers of stress for students with an already challenging schedule. Fortunately, M-A has a variety of Student Support and Counseling Services that can help students navigate through these strenuous times. Through our partnership with Starvista, a local non-profit organization, M-A provides on-campus counseling and prevention/intervention services that support our students' social-emotional wellbeing. Additionally, our Student Support Center offers case management, brief intervention counseling, bilingual parent outreach, and referrals to off-site agencies. Guidance counselors are also a primary source of support and can assist students and families with referrals. All of these helpful services are available to M-A students on a daily basis. Parents are encouraged to contact us with any questions.

M-A Holiday Gift Drive- It's time to brighten the holidays of families in need within the M-A community through the annual M-A Holiday Gift Drive. Last year the holiday wish lists of over 70 M-A families were fulfilled. Your help is needed again. Please consider sponsoring a needy family. By participating in the M-A Holiday Gift Drive, your family, office, church, or social group can directly give to a family within the M-A community. Donors receive a wish list from an M-A family to make your shopping fun and easy. The goal is to provide $30 gifts to family members age 18 and under (toys for children) plus a gift card for the family. Wrapped gifts can be dropped off at M-A in the morning on Monday, December 15.
To sign up to become a donor, visit the M-A website where you will find shopping tips, drop-off information, and a link to your family's wish list, which will be posted by Friday, December 5. You may also give a monetary donation of any amount that will go directly toward buying gifts. Monetary donations can be dropped off at the M-A Main Office. Make checks payable to 'Holiday Gift Drive'. Thank you and please email magiftdrive@seq.org with any questions. Canned Food Drive 2014: Ready, Set, Can! - The annual canned food drive has begun! To help alleviate hunger and draw attention to the hunger problem in our midst, the Leadership class coordinates an annual, award winning canned-food drive. This year M-A is again partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank (SHFB). The food drive is an opportunity for the M-A community to rally around San Mateo County residents struggling to provide food for their families. According to SHFB, one in four people in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties are at risk for hunger. Many of them are children, and some are our neighbors and classmates.
Here are ways that you can help: - When shopping for your family, please add a few extra cans to your cart and drop them into the SHFB barrels. M-A students will hand out a list of most-needed items.
- Consider donating online at SHFB. Enter 'Menlo-Atherton' in the Food Drives search box so that your gift can be credited to the M-A outreach effort.
- Encourage your student to conduct food drives in your neighborhood.
- Sign up for canning. Students do not have to be in the Leadership class to participate. Sign up in room B-21, or contact Mr. Amoroso at mamoroso@seq.org or Mr. Senigaglia at jsenigaglia@seq.org.
If you would like to receive food, please leave a message on an M-A voicemail at 650-322-5311, ext. 50250. Questions can be directed to Lori Cohen and Paula Rash at feedourfamilies@mabearspta.org. Thank you for joining the fight against hunger! Seniors: Important Information About Financial Aid - To help as many students as possible qualify for Cal Grants (free money from the state of California for students who plan to attend any type of college in California), the district has implemented a method for district-wide submission of a crucial form called the GPA Verification Form (GPA VF). Qualification for a Cal Grant is based on a combination of two factors: family financial information as reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the student's Cal Grant GPA (unweighted GPA for 10th and 11th grades not including PE). The California Student Aid Commission (CSAC), which processes applications for Cal Grants, must receive both the FAFSA from the student/family and the GPA VF from the high school to calculate eligibility for a Cal Grant. CSAC now permits "Non-SSN Submission," which means that student GPAs can be submitted without a Social Security number. Instead, each school or district sends the Cal Grant GPA along with other identifying information from the district's Student Information System. All schools in our district will participate in the non-SSN submission.
To opt out of the process, families can make a request to Alice Kleeman (AKleeman@gmail.com). There is no compelling reason to opt out, since families that choose not to apply for financial aid will be unaffected if the student's GPA is submitted. CSAC will process Cal Grant applications only for students who submit both a FAFSA and a GPA VF. If they receive one but not the other, they will not review the student for a Cal Grant. Submission of student information will NOT include a Social Security number, and submission takes place through a secure web site. With the knowledge that sending this information will not have any negative impact on any student, please let Alice Kleeman know no later than Thursday, January 15 (in writing) if you wish to opt out of the GPA VF. Weekly Sports Wrap-Up
JV Football - The Bears finished a very strong season with an incredible come-from-behind 20-17 victory over the Woodside Wildcats. The offense rolled with another 200-plus yard rushing day. Aajon Johnson and Josh Lepulu each logged 50 yards on the ground. Marquise Reid added 32 yards and the winning touchdown. Terrance Matthews-Murphy had a strong day on the ground with 35 yards. Johnson scored on the ground and in the air with a short pass to Devon Dundas. Receivers Dundas had 25 yards and Tate Tussing had 30 yards.
The defense stepped it up in the second half with a shutout. Raynor Zarco had a monster day with 8 tackles and 2 sacks. Bryan Kang and Nikki Carriel came up big with 6 tackles each. The kick-off return team provided great field position as Kennedy Ojeda had a 27-yard return and Lepulu had a 28-yard return.
Varsity Football - On Senior Night at Coach Parks Field, the Bears won their final regular season game over the Woodside Wildcats 23-20. M-A built a 16-0 lead in the first quarter on a 25-yard Chase DelRosso touchdown reception, a Stavro Papadakis 7-yard touchdown run, and a safety on an errant Woodside hike through the end zone. M-A scored again early in the third quarter when Papadakis ran for 28 yards and then held on to win the game. Offensive leaders include Jordan Mims with 123 rushing yards, Papadakis with 96 rushing yards, DelRosso with 50 yards receiving, and Justin Friedsam with a 50-yard reception. Robbie Beardsley was 9 of 14 for 155 yards. Defense was led by Christian Wiseman with 9 tackles, Bryce Rodgers with 6 tackles and 1.5 sacks, and Laki Fonua with 5 tackles and was credited with .5 sacks.
The Bears traveled to Salinas to take on the number one seeded Cowboys, in the first round of the CCS Division I Playoffs, and lost 41 to 8. The Bears scored on a third quarter run by Papadakis who also rushed for the two-point conversion. Most of M-A's offense was through the air as Beardsley completed 20 of 39 pass attempts for 246 yards. DelRosso led all receivers with 100 yards on 3 receptions. Ben Stanley added 52 yards on 7 receptions and Beardsley spread out the receptions to 6 other receivers. Defense was led by Rodgers and Casey Gernaat with 7 tackles each. Congratulations to the Bears for a great season of M-A football culminating in making the CCS Playoffs. Farewell to the seniors. We look forward to next year when this team of mostly juniors and sophomores returns for another exciting year.
Girls Varsity Volleyball - The ride is not over, come out on Tuesday, November 25 for the first round of CIF State Girls Volleyball Championships. First serve at 7 p.m. in Ayers Gym. In a Saturday night 4-set thriller against Homestead, with a capacity crowd on the edges of their seats, the Bears dug, set and killed their way to the 2014 CCS Championship. This week's victories began with a 3-set semi-final victory over San Benito (25-18, 25-12, 25-19), with another stand out performance from Kirby Knapp (50 assists and an ace) and seniors Devin Joos, Ally Ostrow, and Kaitlin Tavarez ruling the court. Joos combined 24 kills with 21 digs with an ace, Tavarez came in with 20 digs, and Ostrow had 12 kills and 9 digs. Junior Leanna Collins contributed 10 kills while classmate Rachel Gerber defended at the net, and the sophomores on the squad stepped up too: Alexa Roumeliotis with 13 digs and Jacqueline DiSanto with 12 (both with near-perfect passing stats); Eliza Grover with 7 kills, 3 digs, and the team's 2 blocks; and Kiana Sales with a stream of steady serves and defensive back-up. The finals brought a formidable opponent in Homestead, but the Bears went scrappy and prevailed 25-22, 21-25, 25-14, 25-17. DiSanto was the queen of aces with 4, and the team total was racheted up by Roumeliotis (2), Sales (2), Joos (2), and Knapp. Defense against the determined Mustangs was a critical full-team effort, with multi-talented setter Knapp leading digs with 11, followed by Tavarez (10), Joos (10), Roumeliotis (9), DiSanto (6), Gerber (3), Collins (3), Grover (3), Sales (2), and Ostrow (2). Grover led the blocking effort with 4, aided by Joos (2) and one each from Gerber and Ostrow. And the mighty kills rained down from Joos (18), Ostrow (12), Collins (13), Grover (3), and Roumeliotis, all with the help of Knapp's 47 assists. Now posting a season record of 28-3, the team's talent is deep and the potential is great. Come out on Tuesday night and cheer on our new champs!
