2015 SAT CLASS SIGN-UPS - In the current TriVocis, you will find information about the 2015 spring SAT class. The signup date is Tuesday, November 18 prior to 7:45 a.m. in room D-20. A lottery will be held if necessary to see which 70 students are enrolled. The SAT class will end on Friday, May 1, and a student's grade in the class will be determined strictly by effort, which includes homework and tests. Performance on practice SAT tests will not be part of the student grade.
M-A HOLIDAY GIFT DRIVE - It is time to brighten the holidays of families in need within the M-A community through the annual M-A Holiday Gift Drive. Last year the holiday wish lists of over 70 M-A families were fulfilled. Your help is needed again. Please consider sponsoring a needy family. By participating in the M-A Holiday Gift Drive, your family, office, church, or social group can directly give to a family within the M-A community. Donors receive a wish list from an M-A family to make your shopping fun and easy. The goal is to provide $30 gifts to family members 18 and under (toys for children) plus a gift card for the family. Wrapped gifts may be dropped off at M-A in the morning on Monday, December 15.
To signup to become a donor, visit the M-A website where you will find shopping tips, drop-off information, and a link to your family's wish-list which will be posted by Friday, December 5. You may also give a monetary donation of any amount that will go directly toward buying gifts. Monetary donations can be dropped off at the M-A Main Office. Make checks payable to Holiday Gift Drive. Thank you and please email magiftdrive@seq.org with any questions. JUNIOR PARENT COLLEGE INFORMATION NIGHT - This event will be held in the PAC Cafeteria on Wednesday, November 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. This is a CHANGE IN DATE from the originally scheduled event on January 20. College advisor Alice Kleeman will talk to parents of juniors (no students at this event, please, just parents) about college admission, careers, scholarships, financial aid, and more. After a brief presentation, there will be an informal question and answer session. Please, only parents of juniors should attend. Simultaneous translation into Spanish will be available.
DISTRICT STRATEGIC PLANNING SURVEY - Parents, the Sequoia Union High School District is seeking your input regarding upcoming strategic planning for our district. Please look for an email from the district with a 10 to 15 minute survey where you can have a voice in the future of our high schools. Your participation is greatly appreciated!
CANNED FOOD DRIVE 2014: READY, SET, CAN! - The annual canned food drive has begun and is an opportunity for the M-A community to rally around San Mateo County residents struggling to provide food for their families. According to the Second Harvest Food Bank (SHFB), one in four people in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties are at risk for hunger. Many of them are children, and some are our neighbors and classmates.
To help alleviate hunger and draw attention to the hunger problem in our midst, the Leadership class coordinates an annual, award-winning canned food drive. This year M-A is again partnering with SHFB. Here are ways that you can help: - When shopping for your family, please add a few extra cans to your cart and drop them into the SHFB barrels. M-A students will hand out a list of most-needed items.
- Consider donating online at SHFB. Enter Menlo-Atherton in the Food Drives search box so that your gift can be credited to the M-A outreach effort.
- Encourage your student to conduct food drives in your neighborhood.
- Sign up for canning. Students do not have to be in the Leadership class to participate. Sign up in room B-21, or contact Mr. Amoroso at mamoroso@seq.org or Mr. Senigaglia at jsenigaglia@seq.org.
If you would like to receive food, please leave a message on an M-A voicemail at 650-322-5311, ext. 50250. Questions can be directed to Lori Cohen and Paula Rash at feedourfamilies@mabearspta.org. Thank you for joining the fight against hunger! (Return to top) |

GIRLS VARSITY TENNIS - It was a big week of tennis for the girls. Six players from each of the 16 PAL schools participated in a single-elimination format Tournament in both singles and doubles. In doubles, the teams of Sami Andrew/Julia Marks and Taylor Noble/Julia Chang were seeded 1 and 2, respectively. These two teams met in the finals with Andrew/Marks besting their teammates. In singles, Lanie Van Linge was seeded #2 and romped to the finals, where she lost a tough match to the #1 seed. Caroline Kelly also competed in singles and battled valiantly in a loss to the #3 seed. On the CCS front, after earning 5 of the final 6 spots in the PAL tournament on top of a 14-0 league record, the Bears were rewarded with a 7 seed in the CCS 24-team playoffs. Being seeded means a first-round bye and a home match on Wednesday, November 12, at 2 p.m. against the winner of Palo Alto and Carmel. Should the Bears win, they play again on Friday, November 14 at 2 p.m. (location to be determined). Come out Wednesday and cheer them on
GIRLS VARSITY VOLLEYBALL - This week's matches capped off the 2014 season with a 14-0 PAL record, landing M-A the #1 seed in the CCS tournament. This week was all about the beloved seniors, who have now played their last league matches as Bears: Devin Joos, Ally Ostrow, Kaitlin Tavarez, and Katie Wilcox. While Wilcox was sidelined with an injury, her classmates led the team to victories against Sequoia (25-11, 25-16, 25-11) and Woodside (25-13, 25-15, 25-7). Across the 2 matches, Joos racked up 5 aces, 35 digs and 26 kills; Ostrow tallied 2 aces, 18 digs and 23 kills; and Tavarez came in as the Queen of Aces at 6 with 21 digs. Even as they honored the seniors with maroon and gold regalia, juniors Leanna Collins and Rachel Gerber showed their own colors on the court. Collins put down 12 kills against Sequoia and 17 against Woodside, while Gerber led the blocking effort.
The sophomores have plenty to be proud of too, as Kirby Knapp continues to master the art of setting, tallying 86 assists in 2 matches, along with an ace and 17 digs. Alexa Roumeliotis served 4 aces, dug 16 big ones, and killed another; Jacqueline DiSanto contributed 3 aces and 13 digs; and Eliza Grover scored with 10 kills, 2 assists, and 4 digs. Kiana Sales and Chloe Johnson each came in with a few critical digs. Freshman, Lauren Heller put down a fabulous kill in each game, and will be a major threat in years to come! Come cheer for the Bears at CCS quarter-finals on Saturday, November 15 at 7 p.m. in Ayers Gym.
JV FOOTBALL - The Bears offensive line dominated for the second straight week in their 28-19 win over the Terra Nova Tigers. VARSITY FOOTBALL - The Bears piled up 322 rushing yards and a season high 462 total yards in a 42-35 loss to Terra Nova. Those yards were made possible by the offensive line (Epeli Mataele, Bryce Rodgers, Max Sonderby, Api Mane and David Castillo). Fullback Ondre Mitchell also provided important blocks. Maua Te'o and Jodan Mims led the rushing attack with over 90 yards each while Robby Beardsley and Stavro Papadakis contributed over 50 yards each. All 4 leading rushers scored on touchdown runs. Beardsley threw for 140 yards mostly to Chase DelRosso, who caught a touchdown pass. Dylan Calderon made all 5 extra points. On defense, Sivi Fillia led tackles (8) while Papadakis, Kevin Jaggers and Bryce Rodgers contributed 6 tackles each. Come out for the season finale against Woodside on Friday, November 14 at 7 p.m., at Coach Parks field.
GIRLS VARSITY WATER POLO - M-A played one of its best games of the year on Tuesday in the opening round of the PAL tournament, defeating Half Moon Bay 10-1. The defense was airtight, anchored by Francesca Gilles, who turned away 11 shots in 3 shutout quarters of action before yielding to back-up Alex Iverson. Kiera Shepard, Kyra Sheeper, and Nadia Paquin recorded 2 steals apiece. Paquin fired in a season-high 6 goals to pace the offense. Annabelle Paris tallied 2 goals, and Fiona Jackson and Marie Claverie chipped in 1 goal apiece.
On Thursday, the Bears suffered a disappointing 8-4 loss in the semi-finals to Carlmont. Carlmont jumped out to a 3-0 lead 5 minutes into the game, and M-A wasn't able to recover to dig itself out of the hole. Paquin paced the Bears with 3 goals.
In the last game of the PAL Tournament, M-A scored the final 3 goals of the game to pull away from Woodside for an 8-4 victory and third place. Paquin led the way with 3 goals, 3 assists and a steal. Paris scored twice and had a steal, while Lexi Lobdell (1 goal, 2 steals), Jackson (1 goal, 1 assist), and Kate Denend (1 goal) made contributions. Gilles anchored the defense and turned away 8 shots. The Bears enter the CCS playoffs this week; their round 1 game is on Tuesday, November 11 at 7 p.m. at Monta Vista.
BOYS VARSITY WATER POLO - The Bears participated in the PAL tournament this week. On Tuesday they faced off against Carlmont, winning 22-4 and on Thursday they beat Burlingame 24-8 in semi-finals. These games featured several JV players recently pulled up to varsity (Andy Maxwell, Reed Williams, Davos Paquin, Alec Berquist, and Cameron Raff).
On Saturday, the Bears played in the final against Menlo. This was the third time M-A and Menlo played in a week, with the series even at the start of the game. After a week of hard training to prepare for CCS, the Bears couldn't pull off a victory, losing to Menlo 10-12. John Knox and Matheus Santos had 3 goals each. They were supported by Christian Huhn (1 goal, 1 assist, 1 steal), Mostyn Fero (1 goal), Jack Beasley (1 goal, 3 steals), Alex Hakanson (1 goal), and Jorge Pont (3 assists, 2 steals).
