M-A TODAY! Watch M-A Today!, M-A's announcement show by students and for students, live on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10:45 a.m. on High School Cube. To view past episodes, subscribe to M-A's YouTube channel. Thank you for watching!
SAT 2015 CLASS SIGN-UPS - In the current TriVocis you will find information about the 2015 spring SAT class. The signup date is Tuesday, November 18 prior to 7:45 a.m. in room D-20. A lottery will be held if necessary to see which 70 students are enrolled. Mr. Whitnah is giving short presentations about the class to as many Pre-Calculus, Algebra II/Trig and Algebra II classes as he can. Juniors enrolled in other math classes may not be hearing the presentation and will need to depend on the TriVocis article for information. Announcements and posters will also be reminders of the enrollment process. Mr. Whitnah has received two questions in regards to the TriVocis article. In response, the SAT class will end on Friday, May 1 and a student's grade in the class will be determined strictly by effort which includes homework and taking tests. The actual performance on the practice SAT tests will not be part of the student grade.
PARENT INPUT ON THE M-A CAMPUS - LBA, the architects in charge of formulating the Campus Master Plan under the auspices of Measure A, would like to receive parent input on the M-A campus. This input will be used when identifying the areas of highest concern as well as those parts of campus that meet with general approval. Please take a few moments to complete the survey. The PTA, school administration and all those in charge of creating the Campus Master Plan greatly appreciate your time and input.
JUNIOR PARENT COLLEGE INFORMATION NIGHT - This event will be held in the PAC Cafeteria on Wednesday, November 19, from 7 - 9 p.m. This is a CHANGE IN DATE from the originally scheduled event, January 20. College adviser Alice Kleeman will talk to parents of juniors (no students at this event, please, just parents) about college admission, careers, scholarships, financial aid, and more. After a brief presentation, there will be an informal question and answer session. Please, only parents of juniors should attend. Simultaneous translation into Spanish will be available.
DISTRICT STRATEGIC PLANNING SURVEY - Parents, the Sequoia Union High School District is seeking your input regarding upcoming strategic planning for our district. Please be on the lookout for an email from the district with a 10-15 minute survey where you can have a voice in visioning for the future of our high schools. Your participation is greatly appreciated!
CANNED FOOD DRIVE 2014: READY, SET, CAN! - The annual canned food drive kicks off on Tuesday, November 4. This is a chance for the M-A community to rally around the growing number of San Mateo County residents who cannot afford enough food to provide for themselves and their families. According to the Second Harvest Food Bank website, 1 in 4 people in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties are at risk for hunger. Many of them are children, and some are our neighbors, classmates, or acquaintances.
To help alleviate hunger and draw attention to the hunger problem in our midst, the Leadership class coordinates an annual, award-winning canned food drive. This year M-A is again partnering with Second Harvest to ensure that families continue to have access to food sources beyond the canned food drive. Here are ways that you can help:
- When shopping for your family, please add a few extra cans to your cart and drop them into the Second Harvest Food Bank (SHFB) barrels. M-A students will be handing out the list of most-needed items requested by Second Harvest.
- Consider donating online. Enter "high school" in the Online Food Drive box and select Menlo-Atherton High School so that your gift can be properly credited to the M-A outreach effort.
- Some students conduct food drives in their neighborhoods: encourage yours to start that tradition!
- Every student is encouraged to sign up for canning. Students do not have to be in the Leadership class to participate. Students can sign up in room B-21, or contact Mr. Amoroso at mamoroso@seq.org or Mr. Senigaglia at jsenigaglia@seq.org. If you would like to receive food, please leave a message on an anonymous M-A voicemail at 650-322-5311, ext. 50250.
Questions can be directed to Lori Cohen and Paula Rash at feedourfamilies@mabearspta.org. Thank you for joining the fight against hunger!

Weekly Sports Wrap-Up
GIRLS GOLF - All Bears did well and improved their score at the18-hole PAL Tournament at Poplar Creek (Par 71). M-A scored 417 while Aragon only 430 and San Mateo 429. Naomi Lee came in 3rd with 76, Abigail Pederson ranked 6th with 80, and Ashley Utz ranked 9th with 83. They all earned the All League and medals.
The Bears made it to the CCS (Central Coast Section) Championship 18-hole Tournament at Rancho Canada East Course on Tuesday, November 4. This is the first time since 2002 that the team qualified for CCS as a team. There will be 11 teams in the CIF Central Coast Section (6 players each) and 30 individuals competing. The top 3 teams and top 4 individual players will qualify for the CIF Nor Cal competition. The 6 players representing M-A are: Lee, sophomore; Pederson, sophomore; Utz, senior and captain; Margaret Sten, junior; Christiana Park, sophomore; and Angie Yang, sophomore.
CROSS COUNTRY - M-A competed in the third and final regular season PAL meet at the 2.95 mile Crystal Springs course in Belmont lastTuesday. While the Bears continued to perform in the top tier of the 16 teams in attendance, they faced stiff competition from the Half Moon Bay squad who won 3 of the 5 races. The varsity girls placed second in their race (out of 13 teams) led by Katie Beebe (2), Olivia Tai (9), Cat DePuy (11), Sophia Goland (22), and Annalisa Crowe (24). The varsity boys team took second place (out of 16 teams) with Adam Scandlyn (4), Rohan DePuy (13), Nicolas Plume (14), Robert Lane (17), and Steven McColloch (21) scoring for the Bears. The JV girls placed second by a narrow 7 point margin led by Cricket Gorey (2), Olivia Shane (4), Kalina Zanelli (6), Nora Siegler (9), and Lucia Vina Patino (13). The frosh/soph boys dominated their race earning first place with Nick Worden (1), Eric Szymkowski (3), Lukas Rash (6), Caleb Hansen (7), and Kyle Conrad (9) all placing in the top 10 finishers. The JV boys improved from the prior two PAL races to finish 4th (out of 11 teams) with Matt Kenney (4), Jackson Fuson (7), Evan Reed (12), Eric Levenson (35), and Jack Retterer (52) scoring for the Bears.
On Saturday, November 8, from 1 - 5 p.m., the Bears will compete for the individual and team titles at the PAL championships at Crystal Springs.
GIRLS VARSITY TENNIS - The Bears completed an undefeated PAL season at 14-0 with a 5-2 win at Woodside. The Bears sported a senior-heavy lineup for the final match. In doubles, the teams of seniors Hayley Fryling/Taylor Fryling, Katrina Wijaya/Victoria Ellis, and Lindsay Andrew/Hanna Kiana won easily by an average score of 6-1 in each set. Senior Erin Perrine won at #3 singles. Freshman Julia Marx's win at #1 singles provided the final margin. Six Bears will compete in the PAL individual tournament this week. Lanie Van Linge and Caroline Kelly will enter the singles competition, while Taylor Noble/Julia Chang and Sami Andrew/Marks will enter the doubles competition. Team play resumes Tuesday, November 11, in the CCS team playoffs, with time and place determined on Sunday, November 9.
GIRLS FRESHMAN VOLLEYBALL - With a win over Carlmont (25-9, 25-19), the Bears posted a perfect season in league play. Leading the charge on defense with digs was Lila Roginski (10), followed by Hannah Roitman (3), Emily Young (3), Camille Rowe (3), Nicole Kang (1), Gabby Rubio (1), and Shea Kearns (1). Kearns also had 4 big aces to keep the Scots off balance while teammates Roitman (3), Rowe (2), Kaile Prosser (1), and Roginski (1) served up winners as well. Kills were put down from the front row and the back by Rowe (2), Kang (2), Prosser (1), Roginski (1), Rubio (1), Jensen Puckett (1), and Rachel Frost (1).
The Bears were invited to play at Palo Alto High on Thursday. After building a commanding lead in the first game, Paly turned up the heat, steadily stole back the lead and ended up stunning with a first game win (28- 30). Determined not to repeat that same fate, the Bears regrouped and went into fighting mode, winning the second game (25-18). Neither team wanted to leave the court with the loss, so in the third game the intensity ratcheted way up and points were traded back and forth, with neither team able to build even a single point lead. It looked like a win could be taken by either side until finally, with the Bears up 14-13, Rowe went up for a kill but tipped in a winner instead to end the match. Stats for the match show that every team member had a hand in this final win. Aces: Rowe (4), Roitman (3), Roginski (1), Kearns (1). Kills: Young (3), Greer Hoyem (3), Rowe (2), Kearns (1) Rubio (1), Kang (1), and Frost (1). Digs: Rowe (19), Roginski (15), Rubio (13), Young (7), Kang (6), Cameron Lindsey (6), Roitman (5), Hoyem (4), Kearns (4), Puckett (2), Frost (1), and Prosser (1). One very big block by Hoyem at a crucial point in game three put momentum clearly on the side of the Bears.
This successful season could not have happened without the perseverance, determination and dedication of coach Joan Gerber. Parents and players alike would like to thank Coach Joan for her hard work and her belief from day one that this team could do great things!
GIRLS JV VOLLEYBALL -Several weeks ago, Carlmont handed the Bears their first loss of the season and on Tuesday the Bears were happy to return the favor with a 2-0 win at home (25-22, 25-15). The win was a very strong defensive effort with almost everyone pitching in with digs by Fiona Lokey (7), Tatum Maines (6), Shauna Sabet (6), Elise Carlomagno (6), Kelsey Tonsfeldt (5), and Cameron Montalvo (3). After a close first set, the offense dug in and decimated the undefeated Scots with kills by Courtney Foliaki (6), Tonsfeldt (5), Montalvo (5), and Murphy (3) off assists by Sabet (10) and Casey Olsen (9). The Bears also scored on aces by Olsen (3) and Tonsfeldt (2).
Thursday the Bears travelled to South San Francisco for another 2-0 win (25-8, 25-21). In another true team effort, Maines led the offense with 4 kills, with Murphy, Claire Baszucki, and Carly McClanahan posting 3 each and Tonsfeldt and Makenzie Hazard with 2 each. Sabet and Olsen contributed 7 and 6 assists, respectively. The Bears served well with aces by Sabet (7), Olsen (5), Kara Mullarkey (4), and Lokey (3). Defense was led by Lokey with 8 digs, followed by Sabet (7), and Maines (6). The Bears will host Sequoia at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, November 4 and Woodside at 4 p.m. on Thursday, November 6. Come cheer the Bears on in their final week!
GIRLS VARSITY VOLLEYBALL - This past week put a couple more notches in the Bears' belt, with straight-set wins against Carlmont and South San Francisco bringing the team to 12-0 in the PAL and 23-3 overall.
The Carlmont Scots fought hard, especially in the second set, but ultimately fell 25-14, 25-23, 25-11. Setter Kirby Knapp led on digs, with a total of 17 to accompany her 14 kill assists. The squad of diligent diggers backing her up included Ally Ostrow (15), Devin Joos (14), Jacqueline DiSanto (11), Kaitlin Tavarez (8), Leanna Collins (4), and Rachel Gerber (3). Joos set the bar for kills with 17, aided by Collins (12), Ostrow (11), and Grover (7). The team's five aces were served by DiSanto, Knapp, Ostrow, and Kiana Sales.
While the South City match was quick, it gave all active players a chance to get out on the court and do their thing. Digs were a full-team effort led Alexa Roumeliotis, Joos, and Tavarez, with 9 each, and contributions from just about every other player. Knapp and Joos served 2 aces each and the 8-ace count was rounded out by Chloe Johnson, Ostrow, Tavarez, and Sales. Knapp put up 31 assists with back-up setting from Roumeliotis (2), and Tavarez (1). While Collins topped the kill tally at 14, Rachel Gerber had a chance to shine from the middle with 3 great kills and the best hitting percentage of the match. Additional kills were delivered by Joos (6), Grover (6), Ostrow (4), and Lauren Heller (2). The match wrapped up at 25-6, 25-11, 25-7.
This week's two home games against Sequoia, on Tuesday, November 4 at 5:15 p.m. and Woodside on Thursday, November 6 at 5:15 p.m. will mark the end of the regular season. Come out and cheer!!
JV FOOTBALL - The Bears dominated the Gators 28-6. The offensive line is fully healthy, and it showed, as M-A controlled the line of scrimmage gaining 281 yards on the ground and 3 touchdowns. Marquise Reid led the way with 93 yards and 1 touchdown followed by Josh Lepulu's 61 yards and 1 touchdown, Jhavante Hill's 41 yards, and Terrance Mathews-Murphy's 31 yards and 1 touchdown. Aajon Johnson hooked up with Tate Tussing for a 10 yard touchdown pass. The defense was lead by Andrew Ojeda with 5 tackles and an interception, Hill with 4 tackles, Nikki Carriel with 4 tackles and a blocked punt, Raynor Zarco and Bryan Kang with 3 tackles apiece. The Bears will take on Terra Nova at home Friday, November 7 at 4 p.m.
VARSITY FOOTBALL - The Bears held their own against an undefeated Sacred Heart but came up short 31-21. Robby Beardsley was involved in all of M-A's touchdowns. Bearsley threw a touchdown pass to Chase DelRosso and rushed for the other two touchdowns.
Beardsley threw for 124 yards and rushed for 27 yards. Ben Stanley led receivers with 55 yards and Stavro Papadakis led all rushers with 53 yards. Jordan Mims completed a two-point conversion. Christian Wiseman led the defense with 12 tackles. Bryce Rodgers contributed 10 tackles and Justin Friedsam, Sivi Fillia, and Tyrique Johnson each contributed 8 or more tackles. M-A is back home and will play Terra Nova on Friday, November 7 at Coach Parks field, at 7 p.m. Come out and cheer on the Bears!
GIRLS JV WATER POLO - On Wednesday night the girls wrapped up their season at home against Castilleja. It was a well fought battle; low scoring but intense on both sides. The Bears came out on top with a score of 3-2. Maddie Maxwell led the scoring with 2 goals; one being a 5-meter penalty shot and Faith Dunn scored the other goal and had a steal as well. Ayla Huhn had 2 steals and Marissa Shepard had 1. Lauren McGinnis had 4 saves in goal.
GIRLS VARSITY WATER POLO - The Bears cruised to an easy 8-4 victory over Menlo on Monday. Many contributed at both ends of the pool, including Kiki Canny (2 goals, 1 steal), Kyra Sheeper (1 goal, 2 assists), Annabelle Paris (1 goal, 2 assists). Single goals were scored by Kiera Shepard, Nadia Paquin, Sofia Bergmann, and Kate Denend. On the defensive end, Lexi Lobdell had 3 steals and Fiona Jackson and Paquin had 2 steals each.
On Wednesday M-A lost 7-6 in an epic 5-overtime battle to Castilleja in the final regular PAL game. The Bears seemingly had the game in hand with a 2-goal lead with less than 2 minutes remaining in the second overtime. But Castilleja scored twice in the final minute to knot the game, and scored the game winner in sudden death 3 periods later. Goalie Francesca Gilles was absolutely spectacular, almost single-handedly keeping Castilleja from pulling away with several point blank saves, including 3 in a 30-second span in the 4th overtime. Paquin complimented Gilles's brilliance in the goal with 3 goals and 5 steals. Paris fired in 2 goals, and Sheeper added a goal, an assist, and 2 steals.
BOYS FRESHMAN WATER POLO - M-A held off a solid Aptos team last week, earning a 8-5 victory. Andy Maxwell led the team at both ends of the pool (2 goals, 2 assists, 3 steals), while Jackson Raff was the scoring leader (3 goals). Mason Friedberg and Ethan Ankrum each scored a goal, and Justin Sano contributed 2 assists. Shon Alimukhamedove recorded 2 steals. Goalie Jordan Payne not only turned away 5 shots, but also winged a shot from half court at the end of the second quarter for a rare goal by a goalie.
BOYS JV WATER POLO - M-A lost its final game of the season last week to powerhouse Menlo, 12-5. As they have all season, the Bears were led by Andy Maxwell (3 goals, 1 steal), Hugo McMillan (1 goal, 1 assist, 3 steals), Alec Berquist (1 goal, 3 exclusions earned), and Reed Williams (4 exclusions earned). Goalie Cameron Raff turned away 5 shots.
BOYS VARSITY WATER POLO - The Bears beat Menlo 14-11 last week in double overtime to win the league championship. Both teams played a clean and well executed game in front of a large crowd. It was a great day for the seniors, with Matheus Santos and Matt Baszucki each scoring 4 goals and Jace Blazensky scoring 2. Mostyn Fero had 2 goals and 2 assists, Jack Beasley had 1 goal, 1 assist and 3 steals, and Christian Huhn scored 1. Noah Smith was solid in goal with 6 saves. Next week the PAL tournament starts, with the Bears likely facing Menlo again in the final on Saturday, November 8.
