Bear print GIRLS VARSITY TENNIS - When senior and tri-captain Sami Andrew's final shot went unreturned, the Bears clinched the match against Carlmont and the PAL Bay division championship for the 4th time in the past 7 years. M-A has a chance to go undefeated in league play at 14-0 with a win at Woodside on Tuesday, October 28, at 4 p.m. in the final regular season match. Against the Scots, Lanie Van Linge, Julia Marks, and Laila Volpe won in singles, while the doubles teams of Amelia Tiemann/Sally Carlson and Caroline Kelly/Amanda Scandalios also won in the 6-1 win. The Bears will learn of their opponent and venue at the seeding meeting on Sunday, November 9. Congratulations to the players, including captains Andrew, Tiemann, and Kelly, and to the coaches, Tom Sorenson, Carlos Aguilar, Rob Creighton, Yasuo Fukui and Brian LaPorte.

Bear print GIRLS FRESHMAN VOLLEYBALL - Last Tuesday, the Bears welcomed Hillsdale to Ayers Gym only to send them home in defeat 25-18, 25-19. Putting up aces for the Bears were Greer Hoyem and Hannah Roitman with 2 apiece, and Camille Rowe, Emily Young, Lila Roginski, Nicole Kang, and Shea Kearns with 1 each. The defense was on fire as Roginski picked up 16 digs, leading the way for fellow diggers Rowe (6), Young (5), Kang (2), Kearns (2), Roitman (1), Hoyem (1), and Gabby Rubio (1). At the net, Hoyem and Rachel Frost each had blocks to help close the games down, while kills by Young (3), Roitman (2), Rowe (2), Kang (1), Kearns (1), and Kaile Prosser (1) sealed the deal. With this win, the Bears remain undefeated in league play!

Thursday the team traveled to Gunn for a non-league game and won the match 25-16, 25-15. Hoyem led with aces (3), followed by Roitman (1), and Roginski (1). Defense stayed busy popping up digs: Rubio (5), Roginski (7), Kearns (5), Hoyem (5), Young (4), Cameron Lindsey (3), Prosser (3), and Kang (3). Keeping the game interesting were kills by Hoyem (2), Young (2), Roitman (2), Kang (2), Prosser (1), Kearns (1), and Rubio (1). As the season winds down, it's clear that this team has greatly improved and is a different team than at the onset of the season.

On Saturday the team played in the Aragon Tournament and won the Bronze bracket. In morning play, the Bears powered through close matches but fell to the JV teams of Mills (19-25, 23-25) and Mercy (20-25, 22-25) but proved much stronger in the afternoon brackets, beating San Mateo (25-18, 25-5) and the Tamalpais JV team (25-17, 25-14). During the San Mateo game, Young dominated in aces (3) and digs (6) and her 1 kill tied with teammates Kerns, Rowe, Puckett, and Frost. Aces also came from Hoyem (2), Prosser (2), Kearns (2) Rowe (1), Rubio (1), and Kang (1). Digs were popped up by pretty much everyone during this game: Hoyem (4), Rubio (4); Kearns, Rowe (2); Kang, Roitman, Frost, Prosser, Lindsey (1 each). In the Tamalpais match, defense was big for Roginski who grabbed 15 digs, followed by Rowe (8) and Kearns (8), Young (6), Lindsey (5), Rubio (4), Kang (3), Hoyem (2), Prosser (2), and Puckett (1). A string of aces by Kearns (5), Rowe (4), and Young (3) clearly frustrated Tamalpais and after a huge block by Frost, it was clear that an M-A win was just points away. Kills by Rowe (5), Kang (3), Kearns (2), and Hoyem (1) put a definitive end to the match and sealed the Bronze.

The last chance to see your undefeated Freshman team in action at M-A is this Tuesday, October 28 in Ayers gym at 4 p.m. vs Carlmont. Come out and show your support!

Bear print GIRLS JV VOLLEYBALLThe Bears posted 2 wins in league play last week. On Tuesday the Bears beat Hillsdale 2-1 (19-25, 25-19, 15-11). Defense was led by Lokey and Carlomagno with 5 digs each and Sabet and Murphy, each with 4.

Bear print GIRLS VARSITY VOLLEYBALL - First things first: a big shout out to senior Katie Wilcox, who, after being a consistent presence on the varsity court since freshman year, will be out for the rest of the season with an injury. Wilcox has made countless contributions to M-A volleyball, distinguishing herself for being able and willing to step into various positions in order to meet changing needs. "The fact that she has always stepped up and taken on that responsibility has been really important to the team," said coach Ron Whitmill. The team will miss her on the court, but the squad is going to try to make her proud for the rest of the season! Last week was a step in the right direction, with wins against Hillsdale and Terra Nova bringing the team record to 10-0 in the PAL and 21-3 overall.

The Hillsdale match (25-15, 25-9, 25-17) was an ace party served up by Alexa Roumeliotis (3), Kiana Sales (3), Kirby Knapp (2), Ally Ostrow (1), Devin Joos (1), and Jacqueline DiSanto (1). Together with Knapp (33 assists), Leanna Collins led the offense with 13 kills, followed closely by Joos (12), and helped by Ostrow (4), Eliza Grover (4), DiSanto (1), and Knapp (1).  Grover and Joos together put up 5 blocks, and digs were once again a full-team effort by Knapp (9), Kaitlin Tavarez (7), Joos (7), DiSanto (7) , Ostrow (4), and 2 each from Roumeliotis, Sales and Collins.

Collins was back in full force against Terra Nova (25-12, 25-13, 25-23), leading in both kills (15) and blocks (2), and adding 3 digs. Dominating the digs were Tavarez (11) and DiSanto (11) as well as Joos (9), Roumeliotis (9), and Ostrow (7). The Collins kill-tally was supplemented by Ostrow (8), Grover (6), DiSanto (3), Joos (2), and Lauren Heller (2), and aided once more by 33 assists from Knapp. Tavarez flummoxed the opposition with 4 aces, with 6 more served by Roumeliotis (3), Heller (2) and Sales (1).

This week the team faces Carlmont at home on Tuesday, October 28,and South San Francisco on the road on Thursday, October 30.

Bear print JV FOOTBALL - Last week the Bears took on Menlo  and came up with the victory and a final score of 21-7. The first half of the game was a stalemate ending with no score. Terrence Matthews-Murphy made his first touchdown of the year on a dynamic 15-yard run to pay dirt. The Serra game was taut throughout, with the M-A leading 5-4 in the final minute. Serra scored the tying goal on a breakaway with 15 seconds left, but after a time-out the Bears freshman sparkplug Andy Brown threaded-the-needle with a perfect pass in traffic to Alec Berquist, who caught the ball with his back to the goal, spun, fended off his defender, and fired in the game winner as the crowd erupted. Cameron Raff was a beast in the goal against Serra, turning away 9 shots including several from point blank range. The Bears faced local powerhouse Campolindo next. After establishing a 2 point lead by the end of the 1st quarter, the Bears lost 8-10. This led to a matchup against Menlo for 11th place. The game was charged and there were a significant number of exclusions on both sides. Menlo started quickly, racking up 5 goals in the first quarter to 1 by M-A.
