M-A TODAY! BACK ON THE AIR - M-A Today! is M-A's video announcement show for students, by students. It streamed over the web all last year. You can watch the show live most Tuesdays and Fridays at 10:45 a.m. on High School Cube. Subscribe to M-A's YouTube channel to view all the episodes. Thank you for watching and supporting M-A Today!
ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT (ELD) TUTORS NEEDED! Do you have two hours a week to help tutor students who are working hard to improve their English? The ELD program has students from many different countries, but the majority of students speak Spanish as their native language. M-A's Hispanic Outreach Initiative program received the prestigious Apple Award last year for its achievements in engaging Hispanic parents and families in their children's education. Because of this great success, the program will be emulated by schools across the state. You do not need foreign language experience. The ELD teacher will give you a plan for each class meeting. You will work with two to three students with the goal of helping them improve in spoken and written English. Over the course of a semester, you will get to know them and see their progress. This is a very rewarding program for both students and their tutors. Volunteers are needed for ELD classes during one of these periods:
- Wednesday third period: 11:15 a.m. to 12:55 p.m.
- Thursday second period: 9:40 to 11:20 a.m.
History/Life Skills class tutors with ELD students (new this year) are also needed:
- Thursday sixth period: 1:40 to 3:15 p.m.
If you are interested, please email eldtutoring@mabearspta.org.

GIRLS GOLF - M-A had its first league match against Aragon last week at Poplar Creek, nine holes, par 35. M-A scored a total of 212 to defeat Aragon, 228. Ashley Utz scored 40; Margaret Sten, 47, Naomi Lee, 35, and medalist of the day with the lowest score at even par; Christiana Park, 56; Abigail Pederson, 42; and Angie Yang, 47. This week the Bears have league games at Poplar Creek: Wednesday, September 17 at 3:30 p.m. against Hillsdale; and Thursday, September 18 at 3 p.m. against San Mateo.
GIRLS FRESHMAN VOLLEYBALL - The Bears' second game of the season came down to a real nail-biter as the team fought for every point against a prevailing Aragon. After Aragon took the first set, they were surprised to see a fired up M-A come back to take the second. The final set was hard fought but Aragon eked out the win, 16 - 14. Cameron Lindsey led in aces, 3. Kills by Shea Kearns, 4, and Hannah Roitman, 4, kept the game alive, with 2 kills each from Nicole Kang, Rachel Frost, and Emily Young. Lindsey and Young, with 5 and 4 digs respectively, led the charge on defense.
GIRLS JV VOLLEYBALL - Last week the Bears travelled to Los Gatos where they lost to the Wildcats 2-1 (25-21, 22-25, 6-15). The team redeemed themselves at home against Menlo making quick work of the Knights with a 2-0 win (25-18, 25-22).
GIRLS VARSITY VOLLEYBALL - The team is on fire and off to a great season, with two decisive victories in the last week bringing the team's record to 3-0. On Thursday the Bears travelled to Los Gatos. Behind for much of the second set and running neck and neck in the third, the Bears held steady and plowed to a three-set victory, 25-19, 25-23, 25-19. Seniors Devin Joos and Ally Ostrow led the response with 19 kills and 14 digs, and 10 kills and 13 digs, respectively. Libero Kaitlin Tavarez came in with 8 digs and was aided in the defense by blocking action from Katie Wilcox and Leanna Collins and digs from Kirby Knapp, Eliza Grover, Chloe Johnson, Kiana Sales and Jacqueline DiSanto. Collins stepped up with 9 kills from the right and Grover had 5 kills from the middle, both working off of Knapp's expert assists.
Friday evening brought Menlo to M-A for another three-set match, with the Bears taking it away 25-16, 25-11, 25-16. Tavarez headed the defense with 16 digs, with help from Joos, Ostrow, DiSanto, Grover, Johnson and Collins. Grover led the ace count with 5 and Joos, Ostrow, Johnson and Knapp added to the 11 ace total. Knapp delivered 26 assists, Wilcox, Collins and Grover took care of the blocking, and the kill team consisted of DiSanto (2), Grover (3), Ostrow (6), and Collins (8). Team leader Joos, who delivered 10 unanswerable kills, was named San Mateo County female athlete of the week by the San Jose Mercury News. Next week the team hosts formidable opponents St. Francis on Tuesday, September 16 and St. Ignatius on Thursday, September 18. Come out and cheer!
GIRLS VARSITY TENNIS - The Bears opened defense of their league championship with a convincing 6-1 win at Hillsdale. The M-A doubles teams of Sally Carlson/Amanda Scandalios, Laila Volpe/Amelia Tiemann, and Taylor Noble/Julia Chang and #2 singles player Sami Andrew won 48 of 49 games to clinch the win quickly. Freshman Julia Marks won at #3 singles, while Caroline Kelly won at #4 singles. The highlight of the day was watching freshman Laney Van Linge play Hillsdale's #1 singles player in what was probably a preview of the PAL individual singles final. Hillsdale's player outlasted Van Linge 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 in an extremely high caliber and well-played match, delighting the fans who applauded on almost every point. This week, M-A travels to Aragon on Tuesday, September 16 at 4 p.m. and then hosts San Mateo on Thursday, September 18 at 4 p.m.
JV FOOTBALL - The Bears jumped out to an early lead over Los Gatos when D'arius Gipson recovered a fumble deep in the Cats territory and Jordan Mims rumbled into the end zone from the 5-yard line. Jesse Donnellan added the PAT which made the score 7-0. The Bears defense was very stingy in the first half giving up only 6 points with a great PAT block by Tate Tussing. The Bears eventually lost 20-7 but challenged a strong Los Gatos Team all the way. Josh Lepulu rushed for 54-yards on 12 carries while Aajon Johnson completed 4 of 8 pass attempts for 52-yards with the longest going to John-Paul Gray on a 28-yard scamper. Defensively the Bears were lead by Gray with 9 tackles, Dimitri Sakalia with 8 tackles, and Raynor Zarco with 6 tackles. The Bears face Archbishop Riordan next Saturday, September 20 at 10 a.m.
VARSITY FOOTBALL - M-A hosted a formidable Los Gatos team Friday afternoon at Coach Parks Field and were overtaken by the Wildcats with a score of 35-7. M-A's offense scored its first touchdown of the year on a 19-yard pass from Robbie Beardsley to Chase DelRosso late in the fourth quarter. Beardsley spread his passes out to a number of receivers including DelRosso, Alexander Ruiz and Cole Shaffer. Stavro Papadakis and Marcus Moimoi led the running attack. M-A's defense was anchored by Stavro Papadakis and Api Mane and held the Los Gatos running back to under 100 yards rushing. M-A will travel to Archbishop Riordan on Saturday, September 20 at 1 p.m. Come on out and cheer on your Bears!
GIRLS VARSITY WATER POLO - M-A lost 13 - 2 to a very polished Sacred Heart team last week. Francesca Gilles made 6 saves in the goal and Kiera Shepard led the team with 3 steals, and Nadia Paquin, Lexi Lobdell, and Sofia Bergmann adding a steal each. Annabelle Paris scored the team's first goal of the season off a thread-the-needle pass from Lobdell. Marie Claverie fired in a fourth quarter goal to round out the scoring.
The Bears lost 3 of 4 games against tough competition at the St. Francis tournament this weekend. After playing well in defeat against Leland on Friday, the girls thumped PAL rival Burlingame 9-4. On Saturday, the Bears lost to Mitty (8-3) and Los Altos (5-3). The offense was led by freshman standout Nadia Paquin (5 goals, 2 assists), Marie Claverie (4 goals, 3 assists), Sofia Bergmann (4 goals, 2 assists), Renee Butler (3 goals, 2 assists), and Kiki Canny (2 goals, 2 assists). Francesca Gilles anchored the defense with 14 saves in 3 games, with Kyra Sheeper and Paquin contributing 5 steals each.
BOYS JV WATER POLO - Sacred Heart thumped the Bears 10-2 on last week. Andy Maxwell scored on a power play on an assist from Chris Lobdell, and Reed Williams muscled in a shot from in front of the cage on a pass from Alec Berquist. Cameron Ruff made 5 saves in the goal, and 6 Bears made a steal apiece: Williams, Berquist, Hugo McMillan, Henry Marks, Lobdell, and Gabe Silva.
BOYS VARSITY WATER POLO - The Bears competed in the Schmitt Tournament over the weekend. In scorching heat on Friday, the boys overwhelmed Granite Bay 17-3 and were subsequently walloped by St. Mary's (Stockton) 7-16. On Saturday, despite leading by two points at the half, three starters fouled out and the Bears fell in a closely contested match to Clovis North 12-14. In the final game, the Bears thumped Mountain View 16-6. Outstanding effort over the weekend by Christian Huhn, Mostyn Fero, Matt Baszucki, Jorge Pont, Jack Beasley, Nik Caryotakis, and Alex Hakanson. Jackson Goudey and Noah Smith played well in goal. Next week the Bears play at Mills on Tuesday, September 16 at 5:15 p.m. and on Friday, September 19 and Saturday, September 20 they compete in the Roche Tournament at Menlo.
