The library will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday from Monday, June 9 through Monday, June 30. The library is closed Tuesday, July 1 through Thursday, July 31 and reopens Friday, August 1.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CHALLENGE DAY 2014! BE THE CHANGE! - Join M-A on Monday, October 28; Tuesday, October 29; or Wednesday, October 30 for this memorable one-day workshop that promotes compassion, communication and community building among the class of 2018. It's a great way for parents of all students, whether freshmen or upper classmen, to get involved at M-A. This one-day commitment helps M-A students break down barriers and create new levels of empathy and respect. Come participate in one of the most meaningful volunteer opportunities of the year.
Adult volunteers are critical to the program's success. Volunteer opportunities are:
- Small group facilitator: 8:15 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
- Registration: 8 - 9:15 a.m.
- Lunch: 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
To volunteer pick the role and date which works best for you, and then email your preference (be sure to specify the date) to Rachel Lokey and Lauren Calhoon at challengeday@mabearspta.org. Please put "Challenge Day Volunteer" in the subject line. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of M-A students!
M-A'S OWN PSAT/SAT - Parents of juniors, who will be taking the PSAT this fall, to discuss enrolling your student in M-A's Own PSAT/SAT Prep course, please email Jane King at jccking@juno.com. SUMMER TUTORING OPPORTUNITIES WITH THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (ELD) - Work with students who are attending summer school at M-A. Be an invaluable asset for these students by spending as little as one hour with them during their summer English classes. No foreign language experience needed. The ELD teacher will provide a plan for each session. You will work with students to help them improve in spoken and written English. These students are motivated to work over their summer break to increase their English skills. Please support them in this quest! Classes meet Monday through Friday for two summer sessions:
- Monday, June 16 through Thursday, July 3
- Monday, June 16 through Monday, July 7
Let ELD tutoring know your availability. The program is asking for at least one hour per day per week. If you are interested, please email eldtutoring@mabearspta.org.

Thanks to You...Our Caring Community!
Our 2013-14 efforts have allowed the Foundation to reach the goal of $2,000,000, up 12% from last year's goal! Over 1,000 donors have participated, with 54% giving more than last year. The Bid 4 Kids online auction raised a record $127,000. You can still join in the fun! Buy tickets to parties and events here.
If you haven't made your annual gift, please visit the Foundation's website or mail a check to M-A Foundation for the Future, P.O. Box 1228, Menlo Park, CA 94026. The Foundation's final donor roll will be published in early fall.
The Year Ahead
M-A students are counting on the Foundation to provide $2,100,000 for the year 2014-15 to fund essential programs, including smaller classes, more electives, a guidance counselor, and the Partnership for Success program, which would otherwise be eliminated due to cutbacks. The Foundation will need the support of every family, veterans and newcomers alike, to meet this critical goal.
A Warm Welcome and a Fond Farewell
For the 2014-15 year, the Foundation Board welcomes 13 new members who bring enthusiasm, energy, and a wealth of experience: George Garrick, Bob Grossman, Roscoe Jennings, Melissa Jorgensen, Baris Karadogan, Evan Lambka, Grayson Lane, Scott Lohman, Jackie MacDonald, Kim McNerney, Amy Paulsen, Lauren Schoenthaler, and David Wright.
This able team must fill the shoes of our talented departing members: Lexi Bisbee, Jeanne Connolly, Sara Griffin, Margie Klapper, Marci Coggins, Maggie Heilman, Kim LeMieux, Christie Tonsfeldt, Linda Itskovitz, Artis Montague, Susan Petersen, Paula Rash, Lucia Tedesco and Elizabeth Wood. These dedicated parents have our deepest gratitude for many years of selfless service to M-A.
Welcome Class of 2018 Families!
The Foundation for the Future invites you to attend our annual
Freshman Parent Coffee
Monday, August 18
8 - 10 a.m.
Outside the Staff Lounge at the Front of Campus
Drop off your student for Freshman Orientation and then join fellow freshman parents for coffee. Principal Matthew Zito will speak about what to expect during the first weeks of school.
Watch for our summer newsletter in August. Until then, happy summer and many thanks for your generous support of the students of M-A!

FALL ATHLETIC CLEARANCE PACKETS - Early-bird athletic clearance packets can be turned in to the administrative vice principal's office Wednesday, July 30 and Thursday, July 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students and families can come in to pick up forms, ask questions, and turn in the completed athletic packets. Athletic packets can be downloaded from the school website and must be turned in by Friday, August 15 for students to participate in fall sports.
M-A WINS COMMISSIONER'S CUP! For the sixth consecutive year, the M-A Bears earned the coveted Commissioner's Cup. This honor is awarded annually to the Peninsula Athletic League school that best exemplifies the league's commitment to sportsmanship and excellence in athletics. Thanks to this year's teams for continuing to represent M-A so well.
THANK YOU - The Boosters would like to thank the entire M-A community for supporting the athletes and coaches. It is a team effort. To view the list of the more than 30 seniors moving on to play in college, visit the Boosters website. Each of these sports stars as well as the other 900 M-A athletes have benefited from your generosity.
SPORTS WRAP-UP
TRACK AND FIELD - The girls team concluded their great season this week at the California State Championships. The meet had the highest quality of competition to be found in a high school meet. We saw many national best marks set in a variety of events. The girls competed with the best of the best in the state and in the nation and held their own. With over 1,800 state schools fielding track and field teams, simply getting to the meet as one of the top 30 athletes is a huge accomplishment. Kathyrn Mohr finished tied for 14th with a very impressive vault of 11' 3". The girls 4x400 team of Annie Harrier, Miranda Simes, Jordan Olesen, and Annalisa Crowe finished 23rd overall running their second best time of the season of 4:00.38. It was quite the day (and the season) for the Lady Bears- especially considering four are sophomores and one is a junior. Congrats on a great season!
