Bear print SeniorAwardsSENIOR AWARDS NIGHT, HONORING OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS - The annual M-A Senior Awards Night will be held on Tuesday, June 3 at 7 p.m. in the PAC. During this inspirational evening, sponsored by the M-A PTA, many hard-working and talented seniors (and a few juniors) are honored for outstanding academic and extracurricular performance as well as service to the school and community. Some of the awards will be a surprise, while many will be recognition for awards already received. Students will be recognized for a wide variety of scholarships, prizes, and commendations awarded by school and community groups. Last year, more than 200 individuals were recognized. Invitations will be mailed to families of students who will be receiving recognition. Awards to junior students will be presented early in the program (so juniors can go home to study for finals!). Refreshments will be served.

Volunteer Opportunities

Bear print CLASS OF 2017 PARENTS - BAKERS URGENTLY NEEDED!  It is a tradition for the freshman class to contribute baked goods for Senior Awards Night, held at the PAC on the evening of Tuesday, June 3. Awards Night is an evening where seniors (and a few juniors) are celebrated for their high school achievements. There is an urgent need for baked goods as over 220 students and their parents will be attending. Baked goods should be finger food, without nuts and ideally homemade. Examples include lemon bars, cookies, brownies, and cookie bars. Please contact Nancy Kessler at nancykessler@velcap.com if you can contribute two dozen baked goods. Drop-off will be at the PAC, from 6 to 8:15 p.m. Drop-offs earlier in the day can be arranged. Thanks in advance for your help in making this a memorable event.

SPORTS WRAP-UP

Bear print BOYS VARSITY BASEBALL The Bears faced Wilcox in the CCS Division I semifinals at San Jose Municipal Stadium - the first time an M-A baseball team has ever advanced that far in the CCS playoffs. As expected, the game turned into a pitchers' duel between M-A ace Erik Amundson and Wilcox's Andrew Najeeb-Brush, with both hurlers piling up strikeouts. In the end, however, Wilcox took advantage of a controversial 2-out balk in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 1-1 tie and edge the Bears 2-1. Amundson (8-6) took the loss, despite a brilliant performance during which he allowed just 6 hits, walked 1, and racked up 8 strikeouts. Amundson had a strong evening at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 and driving in the Bears' only run with a loud sixth-inning double to left field. Brett Moriarty, Daniel Kollar-Gasiewski, and Lawson Joos accounted for M-A's other base hits. With the defeat, M-A finished the season with a record of 18-13-1. The CCS Division I semifinal marked the final high school baseball game for 9 M-A seniors: Amundson, Moriarty, Charlie Cain, Jordan Long, Joos, Matt DeTrempe, Paul DeTrempe, Colin Martell, and Leo McCabe.

Earlier in the week, the team learned that Amundson and Moriarty had been named to the PAL Bay Division All-League First Team. As a pitcher, Amundson led the team in wins (8), ERA (2.33), strikeouts (104, tops in the league), and innings pitched (75). On offense, Amundson hit .392 and led the team in hits (38), runs scored (29), on-base percentage (.504), and stolen bases (19). Moriarty, meanwhile, led the team in batting average (.398), RBIs (23), and batting average with runners in scoring position (.422); he was second to Amundson in hits (37) and on-base percentage (.496). Three other Bears received All-League Honorable Mention: Cain, Kollar-Gasiewski, and sophomore catcher Nikolai Tarran.

Bear print BADMINTONM-A sent 16 players to the PAL Ocean Division playoffs at Woodside. Emmett Lee, Jonathan Lam, and Gray Perrone qualified for the PAL Championship by making the top four in the Ocean Division. The PAL Championship against the Bay Division on Saturday, May 24 was double elimination and only Perrone made it to the top 4, qualifying for CCS. At CCS, Perrone lost narrowly to Gunn, then defeated the Evergreen Valley opponent and finally lost to Piedmont Hills
