SENIORS - Check the list for your name on Karina Escobar-Weaver's door to confirm you are cleared for Grad Night. For those of you who need more time, please turn in your completed waiver, registration, and payment ASAP. This is the FINAL WEEK to get your ticket. Questions? Please email gradnight@mabearspta.org.
SENIORS: GRADUATION INFORMATION FROM THE LIBRARY - All textbooks and library books must be returned by Monday, June 2. This is also the last day to turn in senior clearance forms. Library staff cannot sign clearance forms until all materials are returned and all charges are paid. If students need to pay for lost or damaged items, they must pay in cash. (No checks will be accepted.)
If students have any questions about checked-out materials, they should come to the Library as soon as possible to resolve any problems. The Library is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Students may log in to the library catalog to see the materials they have checked out. To log in to the M-A library catalog, please go to the website, select M-A High School Library, select the login button in upper, right-hand corner of the page, use your Infinite Campus login, and select the "My Info" tab.
SENIOR AWARDS NIGHT, HONORING OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS - The annual M-A Senior Awards Night will be held on Tuesday, June 3 at 7 p.m. in the PAC. During this inspirational evening, sponsored by the M-A PTA, many hard-working and talented seniors (and a smaller number of juniors) are honored for outstanding academic and extracurricular performance as well as service to the school and community. Some of the awards will be a surprise, while many will be recognition for awards already received. Students will be recognized for a wide variety of scholarships, prizes, and commendations awarded by school and community groups. Last year, more than 200 individuals were recognized. Invitations will be mailed to families of students who will be receiving recognition. Awards to junior students will be presented early in the program (so juniors can go home to study for finals!). Refreshments will be served.
GRADUATION REHEARSAL AND CEREMONY - All seniors graduating and participating in the ceremony are required to attend the graduation rehearsal on Wednesday June 4 at 10:30 a.m. (immediately following the Senior Breakfast). Seniors need to report to the Ayers Gym for rehearsal. On graduation day (Thursday, June 5), seniors must report to Ayers Gym by 3 p.m.
M-A'S BEST GRAD NIGHT EVER! Senior Grad Night for the Class of 2014 will take place on Thursday, June 5 after the graduation ceremony. Seniors will check in at Ayers Gym at 7:45 p.m., will be whisked off to a secret location, and will return at 3 a.m. the following morning. There will be little time between the end of the graduation ceremony and the check-in, so please plan your family celebration accordingly.

SPORTS WRAP-UP
BOYS VARSITY BASEBALL - M-A won its first 2 games of the CCS Division I playoffs, the first time in school history that the Bears have reached the CCS baseball semifinals. M-A (18-12-1) will face #1 seeded Wilcox (23-8) on Thursday, May 29, at 7 p.m. at San Jose Municipal Stadium.
In the CCS opener, Erik Amundson tossed a complete-game 1-hitter with 13 strikeouts as #12 seeded M-A upset #5 seeded Watsonville 2-1. Amundson (8-5) allowed just 3 total base runners: 2 walks and an RBI double. After surrendering that second-inning run, the senior right-hander retired the final 17 consecutive Watsonville batters. For the season, the UC San Diego-bound Amundson now has 96 strikeouts in 69 innings pitched, with a 2.33 ERA. M-A received all of the offense it would need in the top of the third inning when junior Max Gardiner's clutch 2-out single to right-center scored Charlie Cain and Amundson to erase a 1-0 Watsonville lead. The Bears managed just 3 hits in the game: Gardiner's 2-run single, and singles by Cain and DH Daniel Kollar-Gasiewski. Cain started M-A's third-inning, 2-run rally with a sharp single to center. Amundson followed with a walk, and both base runners advanced into scoring position on a passed ball. With 2 outs, Gardiner laced an 0-1 pitch to right-center field, giving the Bears what turned out to be an insurmountable 1-run lead.
In the CCS quarterfinals, Matt McGarry scattered 3 hits and struck out 7 as M-A defeated #4 seeded North Salinas 5-2 at Hartnell College. McGarry dispatched North Salinas on just 90 pitches, walking 4 and allowing just 1 earned run. The Vanderbilt-bound junior pitched out of serious trouble in 3 different innings. With bases loaded and 1 out in the first inning, he induced a groundball out that scored a run, and then struck out the next hitter to end the threat. In the second inning, and again in the fifth, McGarry surrendered a leadoff walk and a single, and then retired the next 3 Viking batters to escape further damage. With the victory, McGarry improved his overall record to 2-3 and lowered his ERA to 2.38. He now has 65 strikeouts in 53 innings pitched this season. M-A's offense, meanwhile, collected 10 hits off 2 different North Salinas pitchers. Third baseman Brett Moriarty was 3-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, and 1 run scored, while DH Kollar-Gasiewski went 2-for-4 with an RBI and 1 run scored. Lawson Joos (2-run single), Amundson, Jordan Long, McGarry, and Matt DeTrempe also had base hits for the Bears. M-A produced all the runs it would need in the top of the first inning, scoring 4 times. Long got things started with a 1-out infield single, and Moriarty followed with a walk. With 2 outs, Kollar-Gasiewski lined a single to left, scoring Long and advancing Moriarty to third. Consecutive walks to McGarry and DeTrempe made it 2-0, and Joos then slapped a 2-run single to center for a 4-0 M-A lead. Leading 4-1 in the top of the sixth, the Bears picked up an insurance run when Amundson reached on an error, stole second, advanced to third on Long's flyball out, and scored on Moriarty's 2-out single to center. North Salinas scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth, but was unable to draw any closer as McGarry closed the game out.
TRACK AND FIELD - M-A had a very nice showing at the CCS Trials Saturday evening at San Jose City College. The team had some fast times and great marks that enabled 9 athletes to qualify for finals this Friday, May 30 in 6 different events. Here's a quick recap of Saturday's actions:
- The day started out with the girls 4x100 team setting a new personal record of 50.26 (good for 17th in school history) narrowly missing the finals.
- Freshman Rohan Depuy ran a personal record of 2:02.14 in the boys 800m.
- Annalisa Crowe ran a huge personal record of 2:12.17 in the girls 800m which placed her in the finals and second in school history.
- Zach Plante set a school record in the boys 400m running a 48.95 and qualifying for the finals!
- Deverick Meacham only needed 2 of his 4 jumps to tie a personal record of 21'8" in the long jump and qualified for the finals.
- Kathryn Mohr vaulted herself into the finals with a jump of 11 feet.
- In the most exciting race of the day the girls 4x400 team (Annie Harrier, Miranda Simes, Jordan Olesen, and Crowe) came from behind on a great anchor leg to edge out a win at the line and qualify for the finals. The team's time of 4:01.36 is third best in school history.
- The boys 4x400 team (Meacham, Kevin Conrad, Adam Scandlyn, and Plante) also ran into the finals with a season best 3:26.56, good for 11th in school history.
