M-A ROBOTICS TEAM 766 SUCCESSFUL AT NATIONALS - After an alliance win at the Sacramento Regional Competition, M-A Robotics Team 766 traveled to St. Louis for the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Championship April 24-26. The competition was fierce; 400 teams from around the globe competed, culled from a total of 2,727 teams and 69,000 students from 38 countries.
The 400 teams were sorted into 4 divisions for qualifying matches and elimination rounds. M-A Team 766 had a 6-4 final record in its qualifying rounds and ended the qualifiers ranked in the middle of its division. Unfortunately, M-A was not selected to move on to the elimination rounds. Despite the final ranking, the Bears turned in their best performance this year.
The event was also exciting outside the arena: FIRST hosted a night at a St. Louis Cardinals game, hip hop star will.i.am performed during the championship matches, and the event ended with an entertainment-filled gala. There were also workshops on robotics, leadership, and STEM careers with college admissions directors on hand scouting for talent. Team 766 will continue to work on this year's robot over the summer with smaller competitions in the fall. The team is always looking for more students who want to get hands-on experience with engineering, computer science, business management, team building, and leadership. For more information, visit the Team 766 website or contact us at robotics766@gmail.com.

SPORTS WRAP-UP
VARSITY BASEBALL - The Bears split 2 league games and tied a non-league contest to move their overall season record to 14-9-1 and second-place PAL Bay Division mark to 6-4. In the first game, Aragon took advantage of a 2-out, bases-loaded walk in the top of the seventh inning to tie M-A 4-4 in a non-league game at Bettencourt Field. The game was called due to impending darkness after M-A failed to score in the bottom half of the seventh inning. After Brett Moriarty's RBI single gave M-A a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth, Aragon answered with a run in the top of the sixth on a leadoff walk, a successful sacrifice bunt, and an error by the Bears. The Dons tied the game in the top of the seventh inning, thanks to 2 hits and 2 walks off M-A relief pitcher Erik Amundson. Amundson was the fourth pitcher of the game for M-A. Starting pitcher Kodiak Conrad surrendered 1 run on 4 hits over the first 2 1/3 innings, with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk. Colin Martell tossed 2 2/3 innings, allowing 1 run on just 2 hits, while striking out 3; and A.J. Lemons allowed 1 unearned run in the sixth inning, yielding 1 walk and striking out 1 Aragon hitter. The Bears collected 7 hits, with Amundson going 2-for-3 with an RBI, 1 run scored, 1 walk, and 3 stolen bases. First baseman Matt McGarry, was 1 for 2 (a double) with a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and 2 runs scored. Moriarty, Jordan Long (RBI ground-rule double), Lawson Joos, and Lemons also had hits for M-A.
In the week's second game, M-A's offense was ice cold as the host Bears fell to Burlingame 6-1 in a PAL Bay Division contest. M-A managed just 3 hits, and only 1, Long's fifth-inning double, left the infield. Charlie Cain and Joos had infield singles for M-A. Burlingame tallied 4 runs on 8 hits and 4 walks against M-A starting pitcher Amundson. Despite striking out 7 Panther batters, Amundson suffered the loss, which moved his season record to 6-4. Lemons and Leo McCabe provided bullpen support in the 6th and 7th innings.
In the final game of the week, Daniel Kollar-Gasiewski's 7th-inning 2-run double snapped a 3-3 tie as M-A defeated host Menlo 5-3 in a key league game. Lemons (2-1) pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory, striking out 2 and allowing just a blooper double to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning. M-A starting pitcher McGarry shut down the Knights for most of the afternoon, allowing just 1 earned run in 5 2/3 innings. The junior right-hander scattered 4 hits, struck out 7, and walked 5. The Bears' offense compiled 12 hits, led by Matt DeTrempe's 3-for-3 performance and 2 RBIs. Long, Moriarty (RBI single), and Kollar-Gasiewski each contributed 2 hits, while Cain, Amundson, and Paul DeTrempe accounted for 1 hit apiece.
FROSH-SOPH BASEBALL - On Friday, April 25 the Bears were at home with a chance to move within a half game of first place Carlmont. M-A got off to a shaky start and was down 3 runs after the first half inning, but the team came back strong and battled to within 1 run after 6 innings. The comeback fell short as Carlmont held on for a 9-5 victory. Bret Rodrigues led the offensive attack with a 3 for 3 day which included a long double that came close to leaving the yard. Nick Prainito added 2 hits of his own including a long triple.
On Monday the team traveled to Leland and broke open a close game in the sixth to win 3-2. Jack Retterer was a defensive stand out, making several big plays at third base to keep the game close. Mitch Eisenstat, Kris Liang, Matt Gursky, and Hunter Sevy all gave great pitching performances. Wednesday was a travel day to Burlingame. Connor Clay and Nick Olsen both pitched great and kept the game close, with Burlingame ultimately winning 4-2. Kennedy Ojeda had a great game at the plate, going 3-4.
Thursday was back at home as the Bears took on rival Menlo. Liang pitched an absolute gem allowing only 1 run through 6 innings. Down 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Rodrigues lined a double into the right center field gap scoring Blake Henry with the tying run. One pitch later, Ojeda rang a sharp walk-off single to left, scoring Rodrigues with the winning run.
On Friday, Gursky threw a 5-inning shut out at Aragon. The Bears' bats were booming led by Josh Bogomilsky who went 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs. Rodrigues also added 3 hits and scored 3 runs. The final score was 10-0
GIRLS SOFTBALL - The Bears had a tough week, falling to 12-10 (4-5 in league) after losing all 3 games. On Tuesday, the Bears played extremely well, only to fall 3-0 to Terra Nova in a league game. Every player contributed in the field, including great catches in the outfield by Tanya Lazaro (left field), Lili Huerta (center), and Georgette Libunao (right field). The infield of Monika Gutierrez (third), Yesenia Garcia (short), Jess Burgos (second), and Erin Goode (first) combined to make 13 outs while making only 2 errors. Pitcher Emily Katz had 4 strikeouts and only 2 walks, throwing to Sarah Tiemann who caught a great game. While the Bears got 7 hits in the game (2 by Tiemann, a double each by Lazaro and Garcia, and singles by Katz, Goode and Gutierrez), they couldn't string them together and left 8 on base.
On Thursday, the Bears traveled to Hayward for a non-league game against Mt. Eden High School. Sophomore pitcher Taylor Conrad got the start and struck out 1 player. Freshman Victoria Sanie came in for 11/2 innings in relief, and got 1 strike out. Maddie Zamora got the start at catcher, throwing out 2 runners on the base paths. The Bears had a tremendous offensive game. Katz had a great day at the plate, hitting 2 home runs - a solo shot in the third followed by a 2-run homer in the fifth. Goode had 3 hits, including a home run in the fifth back to back with Katz. Huerta had 3 singles and Tiemann had 2. Zamora and Conrad each had a single. Unfortunately, a combination of walks and hits allowed Mt. Eden to score 12 runs, for a final score of 12-8. On Friday, the Bears faced Mills in a league game. Katz pitched well, striking out 5 and allowing only 1 walk and 6 hits in 5 innings, but errors in the field and ice cold bats at the plate led to a loss.
SWIMMING - The Bears faced their main PAL competition this week at Burlingame. Both JV teams won by large margins while the varsity teams narrowly lost, the first loss for the varsity girls. Despite the losses, there were some good individual swims, with two more swimmers picking up CCS cuts (Sierra Sheeper and Emma Kaufman), bringing the total to 14 swimmers attending CCS. This week brings the PAL Championship meet, with trials for individual events taking place at Burlingame on Wednesday, May 7 and Thursday, May 8. Finals for the individual events and relays will take place on Saturday, May 10.
BOYS LACROSSE - Please join us Friday, May 9 at M-A's Coach Parks field for the varsity lacrosse team's senior night. The ceremony will take place at approximately 6 p.m., immediately following the frosh-soph game. Come out to watch both games against Menlo School. Renee Moore will once again be offering delicious meals and desserts from our snack shack. The frosh-soph game will start at 4:45 p.m. and the varsity game will start at 7 p.m.
BADMINTON - On April 29, M-A defeated Hillsdale at home 10-5. Emmett Lee (#1 boys singles) won 21-9, 21-12; Gray Perrone (#1 girls singles) won 21-11,16-21, 21-18; Arash Afsarifard/Matthew Vollrath (#1 boys doubles) won 21-12, 21-19; Misato Muraoka/Ashley Utz (#1 girls doubles) won 21-12, 21-16; Adam Cook/Katy Bailon (#1 girls doubles) won 21-10, 21-11.
On May 1, M-A lost at home to undefeated San Mateo 9-6. The winners were #2 boys singles Jonathan Lam, #1 girls singles Gray Perrone, #2 girls singles Erin Sanchez, #2 boys doubles Christopher Tam/Alfonso Yap; #3 boys doubles Brian Snyder/Trenton Hall; #3 girls doubles Amara Trabosh/Katrina Wijaya. All 3 matches that the Bears lost went to the third set.
GIRLS VARSITY LACROSSE- M-A split 2 league games last week. On Tuesday, the Bears lost 17-6 to Sacred Heart. Scoring for the Bears were Cathrine Petersen, Amanda Wiseman, Emma Easton, Sally Carlson, Izzy Regonini, and Grace Tully.
On Friday, the team defeated Archbishop Mitty 13-12 in sudden-death overtime, avenging an overtime loss earlier in the season. Both teams started fast, scoring 2 goals in the first 2 minutes. The game then settled into a defensive battle with Mitty taking an 8-3 lead at the half. In the second half, the Bears' offense got going with Wiseman scoring 3 of her 4 goals and Peterson scoring 2 of her 3 goals on the day. M-A defender Hannah Wilson, who dominated throughout the game, had 3 of her 6 defensive takeaways. Down by 1 with 5 minutes left, Carlson scored her third goal to tie the game 11-11. Neither team scored in the first 6-minute overtime period. The second overtime period ended tied 12-12 on a Regonini score. In sudden death, the Monarchs scored what appeared to be the winner on a free-position shot. However, M-A requested a stick check on one of the Mitty players. The officials ruled the stick illegal and invalidated the goal. The Bears moved the ball down the field to Tully who beat 3 girls and scored the game winner.
Last week Sally Carlson earned an Honorable Mention Palo Alto Weekly Athlete of the Week. This week the Girls play at home on Tuesday, May 6 at 4p.m. against Menlo School, where they will celebrate Senior Sam Gardiner. The Bears then travel to Burlingame for a 4 p.m. game on Friday, May 9.
