Fat Sunday - February 7 (This Sunday)
Inter-Generational Service & Choir
|
Sunday February 7, at the 10:00 a.m. service, All Saints-by-the-Sea will celebrate Fat Sunday - a New Orleans Jazz/Gospel style service where we'll transition from the joyful season of Epiphany to the penitential season of Lent, in the spirit of Mardis Gras. The music of the service will be led by a professional New Orleans Jazz band from Los Angeles, and all are welcome to join the choir on that day, to help lead the congregational singing. This will be a Sunday worship event that you will not want to miss!
Inter-Generational Choir Invitation
Children of all ages are invited to participate in the All Saints Choir during the 10:00 a.m. service on February 7. We plan to sing a simple version of the familiar Sunday School song, Jesus Loves Me, arranged as a New Orleans Gospel style spiritual.
It will be simple; no extra rehearsals are necessary. Simply join us at the front of the church at 9:15 a.m. on Feb 7.
|
"Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return."
Ash Wednesday is February 10th. Imposition of ashes will be offered at noon and 7:00 p.m.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the penitential season of Lent, and invites us to get real about our human frailty and finitude and to find comfort and strength in God's unfailing love for us.
|
Do you make a delicious soup?
During the winter months, soups are still needed to feed those who attend the weekly Eventide service on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. Soup containers are available for those who wish to make soup. If you have taken a soup container home, please return it to the Parish Hall kitchen hopefully with soup in it, as a few containers are missing.

Lenten Study Begins Wednesday Feb 17
|
Lent is just around the corner! It comes early this year along with Holy Week and Easter. Ash Wednesday falls on February 10 and with it comes the church season when we look within ourselves to understand our spiritual relationship to God and how we might draw closer. Lent is a time when we practice certain disciplines that enable us to fully look forward to and experience the impact of the cross and Easter.
To aid our spiritual journey, All Saints is offering a Lenten Class based on the book by James W. Moore, Give Up Something Bad for Lent. Join us from 7:15 - 8:45 p.m. in the Parish House for five Wednesdays: February 17, 24 and March 2,9, and 16. Fifteen copies of the book have been ordered and will be available at the Book Table (on the patio each Sunday) for $10.00. Contact Rev. Vicki at vicki@asbts.org. Click here to read more about this class!
|
The Book Table will be offering thoughtful options for our journey through Lent. On it you will find items from the Forward Movement including daily devotional booklets, a Lenten Map Calendar, the Lent Madness Guide and Saintly Scorecard, and more; from Episcopal Relief and Development their 2016 Lenten Meditations; Fasting Prayer Cubes; and other books and publications. The Book Table will also carry our usual selection of Prayer Books, Bibles, and inspirational reading. This Sunday we will also begin a special sale section with a variety of books marked 30-40% off during Lent. Our Book Table will be on the patio every Sunday through Easter after worship services.
Lent Madness Returns! "Taking our faith yet not ourselves too seriously is the essence of Lent Madness..." Join with others across our nation for a rousing online experience to determine which competing saint will win the Golden Halo for 2016 sponsored by the Forward Movement. During Lent, 32 saints are placed in a tournament-style single elimination bracket. Each pairing remains open for 24 hours, and people vote online for their favorite saint. Sixteen saints make it to the Saintly Sixteen; eight advance to the Elate Eight; four make it to the Faithful Four; two to the Championship; and the winner is awarded the coveted Golden Halo. Visit www.lentmadness.org to register and play and pick up your 2016 Saintly Scorecard ($3) at our All Saints Book Table. All Saints will help you keep score with a poster of the Saintly Scorecard displayed at the Book Table each week. Join the madness! |
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner Returns To All Saints!
February 9th at 6:00 p.m.
|
Everyone is invited to celebrate Shrove Tuesday on February 9th at 6:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall with pancakes, sausage, friends and good music! Dinner will be promptly at 6 p.m. and the suggested donation for the pancake dinner is $5 person or $10 per family. Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, and was traditionally viewed as a day of repentance. Shrove Tuesday has become the last day for celebration and feasting before a period of fasting and abstinence during the Lenten season. A signup sheet for this event can be found at the Information Table on the patio after Sunday service. |
"Can We Be One With Christ?"
|
There is an ambiguity in this question. One might take the question to ask whether we can be united with Christ. Can we be so identified with our Savior that we might be said to be one with him?
But I mean the question in this way: Can we be alone with Christ? Can we be solitary Christians, having a personal relationship with Jesus but disregarding the community of the local church and of the broader church - the entire body of Christ?

M-4 Churches & Westmont Host Forum on Global Refugee Crisis, February 28
|
On Sunday evening, February 28 at 6 p.m. the M-4 churches along with Westmont College are hosting a forum on the causes and responses to the global refugee crisis with keynote speaker Rev. Steve Haas, Chief Catalyst from World Vision (WV). The two dimensions of the presentation will be what a Christian response is to the refugee crisis and how are we, as followers of Jesus, to engage with these insecure communities around our world.
The event begins at 6:00 p.m. with a soup supper in the Peterson Family Life Center, with the presentation starting at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. The entire Santa Barbara community is invited, so please let your friends know. A freewill offering is welcomed. For planning purposes, please sign up at the Information Table or RSVP to kathleen@asbts.org.
World Vision is well known for over 65 years of excellence in providing Christian humanitarian relief and development to impoverished communities worldwide. Recently, World Vision discovered that out of the nearly 100 countries in which WV does its work, 31 could be considered as "fragile states." There are 52 Fragile States globally that are characterized by fractured infrastructure, high infant mortality, poor sanitation, and health, flagging educational opportunity, insufficient water resources, civil conflict, injustice, and government corruption.

Birding at the Carp Salt Marsh!
Saturday, February 20, 9 a.m.
|
Come for a time of learning to see, name, and delight in birds at the Carpinteria Salt Marsh, the restored wetland home of dozens of species of songbirds, shorebirds, waterbirds, and wading birds. We'll be walking down a gentle path welcoming to birders of all ages. Wear good shoes that you wouldn't mind getting a bit muddy. Bring binoculars and bird guides if you have them; if not, there will be extras you can share. We'll meet at the Ash Avenue entrance, right at the intersection with 3rd Street at 9AM on Saturday, February 20. The walk will last for around 1-1.5 hrs, and be led by parishioner Amanda Sparkman, a wildlife biologist at Westmont College. Please sign up at the information table, or email Amanda at sparkman@westmont.edu if you're interested in joining in!

Parishwide Launch of Sanctuary Capital Campaign Huge Success; $7.7 Million Already Committed
|
The "How Firm Our Foundation" capital campaign launched last Saturday with great fanfare, joy and love for our beautiful but aging Sanctuary. The home of Peggy and George Ittner was the perfect - and beautiful - setting for roughly 150 members of the parish who gathered for fellowship and to learn about what's been accomplished thus far and what is in store for all of us in the coming months.
"This project is just the beginning of the faithful ministry we will accomplish together, but it must be done. Now. By us. And, I believe we WILL do it, together.
Today, I invite you all to join me and the project leadership in this necessary work to which we are all called.
It will mean all of us giving as joyfully and generously as we can, just as our forbearers did. And it will mean acting faithfully, so that what may seem impossible to us, God will make possible through us." Rev. Aimee
|
The highlight of the afternoon was the announcement that during the initial organizing period $7.7 million in commitments, or 67% of the $11.6 million campaign goal, has been received from the Vestry, clergy, staff and initial campaign leaders. "This is a huge accomplishment and yet there is much work to be done to achieve our goal," Aimée noted.

All Saints Book Club March Selection: Accidental Saints
March 14 at 6:00 PM
|
All Saints Book Group will meet next on Monday, March 14, at 6:00 p.m. in the Parish House to discuss, Accidental Saints: Finding God in All the Wrong People by Nadia Bolz-Weber. The best-selling author recounts how she stubbornly, and sometimes, hilariously, resists the God she feels called to serve. But God keeps showing up in the least likely people and as she lives and worships alongside these "accidental saints," she is swept into first-hand encounters with grace. Join us for fellowship, lively discussion, and potluck. Please bring a dish to share and a beverage (wine, water, or soda) to enjoy. Please contact Rev. Vicki with questions; vicki@asbts.org

Sanctuary Tour
|
"Why do I need to take a tour of the sanctuary? I sit in church every Sunday!" If this thought has crossed your mind, well, please think again. More than 120 parishioners have taken a sanctuary tour to receive an update on the plans to preserve our beautiful and history sanctuary and to ready it for the next 100 years of worship. The next opportunity for a sanctuary tour is February 28th after both the 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. services. If you are interested in a tour, just meet at the Bell Tower after the service.
Did you notice?
The first step in the permit process to take down the Bell Tower and rebuild it is under way! This "notice of development" sign means we are on schedule to begin deconstruction around May 1.
