Sunday School Continues
NEW Start Time - 9:50 a.m.

Sunday School continues Sunday, September 27. We will continue with our current Sunday School Curriculum, Living the Good News. This curriculum is based on the Revised Common Lectionary readings for any given Sunday so that children and parents receive the same biblical message. Having this common lesson allows parents and children an opportunity to explore their biblical understanding together. our classes are taught by volunteer parishioners who delight in the spiritual formation of children. Classes are divided into three groups: Pre-K through Grade 2; Grades 3-5; and Grades 6-8. All meet in the Parish House. Classes begin at 9:50 a.m. and end just prior to our Eucharistic Celebration in the main church when children join their parents for communion. All children are welcome in both Sunday School and church.

St. Francis Day Pet Blessing, Sunday, October 4, 10 a.m. (The 8 a.m. service will be a pet free zone!)
Bring your favorite furry, feathered or finned friend, and join the chorus of all creation. We believe God made all of creation and called it good. To share God's blessings, we invite our pets to join us in the sanctuary for this special (and slightly shortened) Sunday service of Holy Communion.
Parish children will help lead worship, and our Parish School children are invited to sing a special song of creation during the worship service, which they will prepare during our weekly chapel service. |
God the Giver Christian Formation Series

Each hungry person, among the first century multitude of five thousand who gathered to hear the teachings of Jesus, discovered that he and she had enough and was enough - even more than enough!
(See John 6:1-14 or Matthew 14:13-21)
How can we, in the complexity of the twenty-first century, reconcile our economic and spiritual lives? Are the two antithetical or can one enliven the other? In four sessions beginning October 11th, parishioner Cecile Lyons, clinical and financial psychologist, will facilitate personal exploration of the subjective experience of money that will offer participants the opportunity to reduce money anxiety and fears of scarcity, as well as provide the possibility for increasing spiritual abundance and personal well-being.
Oct. 11th: Relationship between faith and finance - money as a spiritual practice.
Oct. 18th: Personal Money-Bio - expansive or constrictive for soulful living.
Oct. 25th: Money scripts behind stories of fear and faith, scarcity and abundance.
Nov. 1st: The Art of Balance: Giving and Receiving, Purposeful Prosperity
Silver, Gold, and Soul will meet Sundays 11:15am-12:30pm in the Parish House.

Remember Items for All Saints' Food Wagon
|
 All Saints' Food Wagon program is off to a great start thanks to your generosity. This program will continue each Sunday, as we collect food for the hungry along with essential hygiene products. Food and items that you bring for the hungry will be gathered each Sunday at the entrance in a green wagon and brought forward to the altar with our offerings and oblations to God. Your donations will be delivered to Cafe Picasso Food Pantry at St. Michael's University Church (St. Mike's) in Isla Vista to serve UCSB and SBCC students struggling with food insecurity.
A number of items continue to be in demand this week. Please consider donating some of the following items:
toothpaste
toothbrushes
almonds
feminine hygiene products (tampax/pads)
peanuts
canned chicken
dried fruit
rice
crackers
soup
corn
mixed vegetables
tuna
peanut butter
jelly/jam
All Saints' Food Wagon provides us all with an opportunity to give out of our abundance. One way to do so is to try spending 10% (the biblical tithe) of your grocery bill on food that you will give away. Parents, you might invite your children weekly to choose the food that your family will bring to church to give to those who don't have enough to eat. This makes them aware of the blessings of their life and forms them at a young age to make a difference in the hurts of their world. Through this simple but loving service, both young and old can extend Christ's grace from the meal we share at the altar to our hungry neighbors' tables. |

Mind of Faith - OS 2015 Continues Next Week
|
|
Our 3-week Eventide class (after supper) taught by Pat McClure continues this coming week. She's given the classes an overall title that sounds like computer advertisement -The Mind of Faith - OS 2015 ...... because it turns out that our minds AND our faith depend entirely on the way we use the operating systems of our brain and heart.
She will unfold a new kind of Genesis story - using the findings of brain research combined with the spiritual discoveries they're leading us to. She'll outline the physical anatomy of thought and belief and unfold the pathway to spiritual transcendance that is embedded, but largely unused, in our 'leetle grey cells' and in our physical hearts.

Prayer Groups Are Back In Full Swing
|
Beyond the words and thoughts of ordinary prayer, there is another way to encounter the Presence of God. It's a deliberate intention to become still within and to simply hold ourselves open to God's Presence. Called meditation in many traditions, it's known as contemplative prayer in Christianity. All Saints offers two versions of this deep prayer
practice every week: Centering Prayer and Healing Presence at 9:15 a.m.
Centering Prayer sessions are held every Thursday morning from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Youth Room of the Parish House. Centering Prayer sessions are also held every other Sunday morning at 9:15 a.m. in the Church Office Conference Room. On alternate Sunday mornings at 9:15 a.m. we add a focus on healing as the intention of sitting silently in God's Presence.
They both follow the same practice. We sit in a circle, become inwardly quiet, and open our hearts, which guide body, mind, and soul to a new level of awareness that is felt rather than thought. Here, Silence is discovered to be alive - a fathomless field of being and in-formation, the still point of truth, the source from which all our reality flows.
Newcomers are especially welcomed. Come and try it!

The Syrian Civil War, now in its fourth year, has unleashed a humanitarian emergency. According to a recent UNHCR report, more than 4 million people (just through the end of 2014!) have fled their homes to escape the war in Syria, adding to a worldwide total of nearly 20 million refugees, half of whom are children. This is the largest and most widespread refugee crisis the world has known since World War II.
Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori addresses this,
The children of Abraham have ever been reminded to care for the widow and orphan and the sojourner in their midst, who were the refugees and homeless of the time. Jesus charged his followers to care for the least of these and proclaim the near presence of the Reign of God - in other words, feed the hungry, water the thirsty, house the homeless, heal the sick, and liberate the captives. We cannot ignore the massive human suffering in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, nor in Asia and the Americas. We are our brothers' and sisters' keepers, and our lives are bound up with theirs. The churchwide ministry of Episcopalians has included refugee resettlement since the refugee crisis of World War II. It continues today through the leadership of Episcopal Migration Ministries, and I urge your involvement, action, and support. Read about their work below, and share these opportunities with friends and co-workers. You will discover anew the power of good news in the face of the world's tragedies.

 Our rolling book carts offer a variety of gently used (very good condition, no marking, and no highlights) fiction, non-fiction, special interest, and children's books for sale for "goodwill offerings." Think "Library Book Sale." If a book sparks your interest, donate whatever you feel is in your price range. Books will be available on second and fourth Sundays of the month during Coffee Hour after each service. Proceeds will support our campus ministries.
