Greetings!
Informative Town Hall Meeting Held Last Sunday
in Seismically-Challenged Sanctuary

Approximately 90 attendees turned out for the Town Hall Meeting last Sunday to hear an all-encompassing and revelatory update on the Sanctuary Preservation and Readiness Project.

Senior Warden Tom Mack welcomed all in attendance and the Rev. Aimee Eyer-Delevett opened the meeting by reminding parishioners that the Sanctuary is our spiritual home.  "It is where we are washed in the waters of baptisms and are marked as Christ's own forever," she noted.  "We are fed at the altar each week . . . and it is also at this Church where we find hope and healing.  We must preserve our Church for the generations to come."

Chip Nichols, chair of the Project Facilities Committee, explained the genesis of the project. In 2008, the All Saints-by-the-Sea Vestry undertook a comprehensive analysis of our entire campus to ensure we were proactively maintaining our Church home. Conducted by a professional building inspector, the list of needs of our 10 buildings was exhaustive. We made hundreds of repairs and addressed all of our facility needs except those associated with the very foundation of our 115-year-old Sanctuary. Due to the numerous structural deficiencies and other needs identified within our Sanctuary it became clear that a holistic look at the needs of this historic building was in order.

Chip then introduced Bob Easton, AIA as the project architect and Richard Thorne as All Saints' project manager. Bob presented the results of a top-to-bottom engineering study conducted by Parker-Resnick that not only confirmed the instability of the Bell Tower, but established that the old foundations under the west end of the

Sanctuary are in even worse condition than thought, and these vertical seismic weaknesses are only part of our problem - in addition, the Sanctuary is not properly braced to withstand lateral seismic forces.

Bob also presented a slide show showing poor or missing support under the nave floor and along the perimeter walls.  Needless to say, it's very scary down there.

The Rev. Aime then described the importance of this project to the mission and ministry of All Saints. She also highlighted the theological

underpinnings of the various project elements. She stressed that our Sanctuary requires our full attention and care if it is to be not just the ongoing physical space in which we worship but also the backdrop upon which we carry out God's call to serve those in need and build up members of the body of Christ.

Chip then presented the results of a project cost analysis conducted by respected local builder R. J. Spann. Estimated costs have increased to $11.6 million largely due to the significant additional seismic reinforcement required in the foundations, floor, walls and roof of the Sanctuary as called for by the Parker-Resnick engineering study. The project cost increase also reflects the greater design detail provided by the architect's work, increases in construction contingencies recommended by the architect, and material and labor cost inflation.

After our capital campaign Co-Chair Ed Birch provided a report about campaign plans and our clear capacity to fund the preservation and readiness of our Sanctuary, the meeting wrapped up with a Q&A from parishioners who raised questions about the organ, communion rail, stairs, acoustics, lighting, the Memorial and Seaside chapels, and much more.

Stay tuned for many more details about the Town Hall presentation in an upcoming special edition of the Bell Tower.

ASBTS Parishioner Ellen Sandin Joins Episcopal Young Adult Service Corps (YASC)

Lifelong parishioner and 2015 College of Wooster graduate in religious studies, Ellen Sandin has been accepted into the Episcopal Young Adult Service Corps (YASC). This program offers young Episcopal adults an opportunity to serve in other Anglican communities around the world. Part of Ellen's commitment to the program is a fundraising goal of $10,000. This Spring the Outreach Committee granted her $5,000 toward her goal. On June 14 & 21 Ellen will share her story with the congregation, and we will all have an opportunity to support Ellen's ministry work in Brazil. If you'd like to help, please note "Scholarship Fund" in a check to ASBTS.

Volunteers Still Needed! June 10-21 Project Give to benefit St. Mike's Episcopal Ministry at UCSB

Volunteers will be needed to help sort, organize and sell stuff at the annual gigantic yard sale of donated clothing, furniture, household goods, kitchenware, toys, sports equipment, electronics, books and much more that UCSB students and Isla Vista residents no longer want or need. This is the UCSB-sponsored Project Give which takes place at Embarcadero Hall in I.V. Net proceeds of the sale are divided among participating I.V. churches and nonprofits according to the number of volunteer hours donated. Our donated hours will benefit St. Mike's.

In 2014, 13 volunteers from St. Mike's, Trinity and All Saints donated 100 hours working at the sale which were valued at $3,044. Volunteer sign-up information will be provided when received in the near future. David Boyd, [email protected], is the contact for more information.

M-4 Summer Project - Backpacks for Area Children

The M-4 (Montecito 4) Churches are pleased to announce the summer service project - providing backpacks stuffed with critical supplies for school success to local children in need. These children are living in People's Self Help Housing communities and rely on these learning tools. Together with the other M-4 Churches, our goal is to provide backpacks and supplies to 310 children.

On Saturday, July 25 Montecito Covenant will host our M-4 day of service from 10am-Noon where we will stuff the backpacks. Volunteers are needed for this day and donations are greatly needed, as each church as been asked to raise $3,500 for this project. A donation of $45 will give one child a backpack and the majority of supplies needed to have a successful start to the school year. Please consider giving the gift of a backpack or two to help a child in need have the tools to succeed in school. Please note "M-4 Backpack Project" in the memo of your check.

Centering Prayer & Healing Presence on Summer Hiatus
The annual summer hiatus in our Sunday morning prayer meetings seems to have arrived. there will be no Sunday morning meetings of either Centering Prayer or Healing Presence for the months of June, July, and August. If enough of us are in town by mid-August, we'll start our between-service meetings again. Otherwise, the first Sunday in September will resume with 9:15 a.m. Centering Prayer and the second Sunday with 9:15 a.m. Healing Presence, and we'll be back to our alternating Sunday morning prayer sessions between the services.

We are already feeling the pull of Summer Solstice stretching out the hours like a great umbrella of time and light, allowing us to encounter more fully the tides of summertime living. May that outer light shift into experiences of the inner light of God's Presence for us in unexpected moments of discovery and play all summer long.

All Saints Book Club's July book: "The Fifth Gospel"

The All Saints Book Club will meet Monday, July 13th at 6 pm in the Parish House to discuss instant New York Times Bestseller The Fifth Gospel by Ian Caldwell. A lost gospel, a contentious relic, and a dying pope's final wish converge to send two brothers-both Vatican priests-on an intellectual quest to untangle Christianity's greatest historical mystery. At once a riveting intellectual thriller, a feast of biblical history and scholarship, and a moving family drama, The Fifth Gospel is "a story of sacrifice, forgiveness, and redemption. Peppered with references to real-life people, places, and events, the narrative rings true, taking the reader on an emotional journey nearly two thousand years in the making" (Library Journal, starred review). Everyone is invited to join in fellowship, potluck dinner, and discussion! Contact the Rev. Vicki with questions: [email protected]. Happy reading!
