May 29, 2015
Greetings!

End of Year Picnic This Sunday at 11:30AM - All invited! See you on the patio to kick off sumemer!

Summer's here...well, almost! Each year, All Saints helps usher in the season with an End of Year BBQ. After the 10:00 a.m. worship service - head to the patio and lawn for great food, fun games and lots of wonderful fellowship with new friends and old during this spirit-filled celebration.

(If you are worshiping at All Saints for the first time this Sunday or returning to worship here, this is a perfect way for us to welcome you!) Grill master Andy Rosenberger and his crew will be firing up dogs, sausages, burgers and veggie burgers and there will be face painting and yard games for children on the lawn next to the patio.

All Saints Book Club's July book: "The Fifth Gospel"

The All Saints Book Club will meet Monday, July 19th at 6 pm in the Parish House to discuss instant New York Times Bestseller The Fifth Gospel by Ian Caldwell. A lost gospel, a contentious relic, and a dying pope's final wish converge to send two brothers-both Vatican priests-on an intellectual quest to untangle Christianity's greatest historical mystery. At once a riveting intellectual thriller, a feast of biblical history and scholarship, and a moving family drama, The Fifth Gospel is "a story of sacrifice, forgiveness, and redemption. Peppered with references to real-life people, places, and events, the narrative rings true, taking the reader on an emotional journey nearly two thousand years in the making" (Library Journal, starred review). Everyone is invited to join in fellowship, potluck dinner, and discussion! Contact the Rev. Vicki with questions: [email protected]. Happy reading!

Summer Sunday School Plans Announced

All Saints' Summer Sunday School Program begins on June 21, and will continue through the end of July. Instead of separate classes, the children will meet together for special projects centered on God's Good Creation. Children will meet downstairs in the entry way of the Parish House prior to the 10 a.m. service. The month of August will be a time of vacation for all of the children and teachers. Normal Sunday School schedule will resume on Sunday, September 13. Questions? Please contact the Rev. Vicki Mouradian at [email protected].

June 28 - God, Music & Fun in Parish Hall.

July 12 - Baking Cookies for Transition House. The cookies will be delivered later in the day.

July 19 - Special time with Rev. Aimee.

July 26 - Eucharist on the beach with Rev. Vicki. All ages will be given ministry opportunities.

Trinity Sunday - May 31
Trinity Sunday, officially called "The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity," is one of the few celebrations of the Christian Year that commemorates a reality and doctrine rather than a person or event. This feast day celebrates "the one and equal glory" of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, "in Trinity of Persons and in Unity of Being" (BCP, p. 380). It is celebrated on the first Sunday after Pentecost. Trinity Sunday is one of the seven principal feasts of the church year (BCP, p. 15).

On Trinity Sunday, the faithful remember and honor the eternal God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Trinity Sunday is celebrated the Sunday after Pentecost, and lasts only one day, which is symbolic of the unity of the Trinity. The Eastern Churches have no tradition of Trinity Sunday, arguing that they celebrate the Trinity every Sunday. Westerners do as well, although they set aside a special feast day for the purpose.

Budget Update From Your Senior Warden

I wanted to update you on our budget gap and to pass on more really good news. Thanks to the generous pledge increases of many of us, including some very substantial increases, we are now expecting that, instead of a deficit of about $200,000 this year, we will be approximately in balance. What a wonderful thing! Thank you!

There is much more stewardship work ahead, so that we can sustain, expand, and enhance our ministries in many areas, and we will be hearing more about this in the Fall. Still, it is a wonderful thing to know that, for the first time in many years, we can enter that discussion in a fiscally responsible position!

Blessings+

Tom Mack, Senior Warden
Town Hall Meeting NEXT Sunday, June 7

Please Help Welcome Bishop Bruce August 1 & 2

Bishop Diane Bruce will visit All Saints on Saturday, August 1 to lead a workshop to support ASBTS' creative thinking around year-round stewardship. All who are interested are welcome to join. Time and location to be determined. Bishop Bruce will also lead up in worship on Sunday, August 2nd. Please join in welcoming Bishop Bruce back to All Saints.

Save the dates: June 10-21 to benefit St. Mike's Episcopal Ministry at UCSB

Volunteers will be needed to help sort, organize and sell stuff at the annual gigantic yard sale of donated clothing, furniture, household goods, kitchenware, toys, sports equipment, electronics, books and much more that UCSB students and Isla Vista residents no longer want or need. This is the UCSB-sponsored Project Give which takes place at Embarcadero Hall in I.V. Net proceeds of the sale are divided among participating I.V. churches and nonprofits according to the number of volunteer hours donated. Our donated hours will benefit St. Mike's. In 2014, 13 volunteers from St. Mike's, Trinity and All Saints donated 100 hours working at the sale which were valued at $3,044. Volunteer sign-up information will be provided when received in the near future. David Boyd, [email protected], is the contact for more information.

All Saints' Summer Arts in Liturgy

Did you know that the Episcopal Church (U.S.A) publishes 6 hymnals? No, that number is not a mistake. Our communion of faith has authorized 6 hymnals for all Episcopal Churches in the U.S.
Our worship at All Saints during the upcoming summer months will be filled with the music of these remarkable resources. You won't want to miss a single Sunday this summer, as we explore the broad expanse of music published by the Episcopal Church! Please consider supporting our special music fund this summer by making a financial donation - please note "special music fund" in the check memo.
