From 1 Corinthians comes one of the most popular scripture texts read at weddings: "Love is patient, love is kind, love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way..." This text provides a spiritual roadmap for so many Christians as they set off to begin their own families. It instructs us in the kind of love and self-sacrifice required to sustain and strengthen marriage and family. But Paul wrote these verses to the Christian community in Corinth about how to live with one another as a church family.
We, the household of God, are reminded of our responsibility to one another and to the community's overall health. This responsibility grows out of the limitations imposed by love. The health of the spiritual family - the church - takes priority over our freedom, just as it does in our marital families and families of origin.
This Sunday, we'll have an opportunity to make this responsibility to our spiritual family real and tangible. The Annual Meeting is a time when we all gather as a spiritual family to talk about how our household is doing and to cast a vision for our common purpose and ministry - ministry which God and the world needs us to fulfill. I can't do it alone. The vestry can't do it alone. The staff can't do it alone. Nor can a handful of committed leaders. We all must do it together. I'll try to make it a little fun, but I need each of you to sacrifice a bit of your individual freedom to build up our spiritual family, to care for our community's overall health.
Because that's what love does...
Let's commit ourselves to the love that builds up. Surely, Paul's words to the church in Corinth continue to speak to us today, calling us to recognize the limitations imposed by love, and to give of ourselves to build up the whole. They continue to lift up for us the importance of our commitment to the household of God, the church, our spiritual family. We need one another to more fully discern and live into God's purpose for this household. See you all Sunday.
Peace to you all,
The Rev. Aimée Eyer-Delevett
Rector

An Invitation to Serve:
Transition House, This Sunday
|
As Christians we are called to serve God and to love each other. A cherished way we keep this promise at All Saints is through our feeding ministries. This Sunday, we will have the opportunity to love our neighbors by feeding our neighbors living at Transition House.
Many hands are needed as we prepare dinner at 5:00 p.m. and serve it at 6:30 p.m. Transition House is located at
425 E. Ortega Street. Please visit the Information Table on the patio after service today if you will help or are interested in learning more about this ministry. Contact: Pat Murdy or David Boyd.
Transition House is dedicated to the solution of family homelessness in the Santa Barbara community. All Saints has been blessed to be able to support this vital community organization for years and you are invited to join in this tradition. Each month, parishioners from All Saints prepare and serve dinner to approximately 58 homeless family members.
