June 25, 2014
Greetings!

This Sunday we have the chance to observe a somewhat unusual celebration: "Social Media Sunday" which is a day for those of us engaged in social media to share our faith with our online friends, and for those of us who are not yet engaged to learn more about participation in one of these digital communities.

You can read more below about the different ways you can get involved in this special day, and I hope to see you on Sunday for perhaps the only day in the year when you'll actually be asked to look at your smartphone during services.

The Rev. Dr. Bob Honeychurch

Interim Rector

Outreach Committee Names New "Focus Project" in Honor of Lisa Chiles
Lisa Chiles

The 2014-16 parish Focus Project is being named the "Lisa Chiles Cleveland Elementary School Focus Project" in honor of Lisa, who was an All Saints parishioner and Outreach Committee member who was dedicated to our efforts to help the children of our community.

Lisa passed away a few weeks ago after fighting Lou Gehrig's disease.  We hope to honor Lisa's dedicated life of public service through this gesture to name our effort in her honor.

Food Distribution Rescheduled

The free food distribution at Carpinteria Children's Project at Main, which normally takes place on the 4th Wednesday of each month (today), will instead take place next Wednesday, July 2 at 1 p.m.

This change is necessary because the staff at the Children's Project are on their summer break and the building is closed. Volunteers of all ages are always needed to help organize the food on tables, decide quantities for fair sharing and distribute the food.  Please sign up at the Information Table on Sunday to help with this Outreach activity.

Summer Potlucks on the Patio

Potlucks on the Patio are an All Saints tradition that combines our Parish's wonderful culinary skills with our love for socializing and community. This summer we have two Wednesday events planned: July 2 and August 20. Plan to come and bring your favorite dish. See you there!

movieAll Saints 2nd Annual Film Festival

All Saints is once again hosting a five-week summer film festival. The Parish Hall will be transformed into a movie theater, complete with popcorn and Red Vines.  We'll feature a different movie each Wednesday evening after Eventide through July 9.

Frozen
Tonight: June 25: Frozen
July 2: As Good As It Gets
July 9: Fried Green Tomatoes

See you at the movies!

Outreach Committee "Adopts" Cleveland Elementary School; Ambitious Plans Set

With the construction of a 10-room school in Labiche, Haiti, nearing completion, the All Saints Outreach Committee is looking to the next "Focus Project" that will present a multi-year opportunity to embrace a mutually-beneficial new relationship that will enable the parish opportunities to offer our time, our talent and our treasure to serve those in need.

The unanimous selection for the next parish Focus Project is: Cleveland Elementary School!  Located on Alameda Padre Serra above the roundabout, it is a mere two miles from All Saints, yet the children and families are in great need of financial support as well as a hands-on relationship with its neighbors.

There are numerous opportunities available for parishioners to become involved with Cleveland, from gardening to tutoring to merely eating lunch with the students and making conversation for just half an hour.  Please click the link below to read more about the background of this exciting new relationship.

Forum on Aging Well
Senior Planning Services of Santa Barbara will be coming to All Saints by-the-Sea on Thursday, June 26, to present a seminar on Aging Well/Aging at Home.  Join parishioners from the other M4 churches in the Parish Hall to hear the first of a two part series on this topic.  "Mind, Body, Nutrition, and Movement" will be the focus of this session, with a further session focusing on "Financial Well Being" will be held in July.

The concept of aging well to promote health and well-being is fundamental to increasing length and quality of life.  Aging Well/Aging at Home promotes personal behaviors and environments that reduce functional decline to help older adults maintain their independence and health, emphasizing the idea that people can maintain satisfying and healthy lives as they age.

Excitement Mounts for Pageant of the Masters

With less than four weeks to go, we have sold half our tickets for our trip to the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach! We have twelve tickets left for this outstanding summer event on July 20. Join us for a light lunch following the 10 a.m. service, luxury coach to and from Laguna Beach, entrance and viewing of the festival art, dinner at the Tivoli Terrace, live music on the grounds, and the performance of the Pageant in an outdoor theatre. The Pageant is known for its "living pictures" in which classical or contemporary works of art are recreated by real people who are made to look nearly identical to the originals.
Those not attending morning church services are welcome to join the group for lunch at noon (Parish House) and the rest of the day's events. Family and friends are welcome! Sign-up forms are available at the Information Table after services or in the Church Office. You may contact the Rev. Vicki Mouradian at 805/969-4771 with any questions. Your payment confirms your reservation. Tickets are $125 each and may be purchased by cash, check, or credit card (online payment is available).

"Education for Ministry" Offered

Education for Ministry (EfM) will once again be offered in Santa Barbara this year, beginning in September. EfM welcomes all interested, new, and returning participants to participate in this program of theological education at a distance, which originates from the School of Theology at the University of the South in Tennessee.

Local groups meet weekly throughout the United States and o  verseas from September through the following June. Meetings are generally three hours and consist of worship, group study, and theological reflection which is the heart of the program. EfM's mission is to provide an educational foundation and support for all ministries through deepening of faith and understanding of the church, and living theologically in the world.

Please contact EfM mentor Robert Brown at 805/895-3620 for more information.

Sunday Prayer Groups on Summer Break

Both Sunday morning prayer meetings (the Centering Prayer and Healing Presence groups) will be going on a two month summer hiatus, beginning in July.  Weekday sessions will not be affected, and the Sunday sessions will resume meeting in the Church Office at 9:15 a.m. in September.
Book Group to Meet July 14book

All Saints' Book Group will meet next on Monday, July 14, to discuss The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History by Robert M. Edsel with Bret Witter.  Focusing on the eleven-month period between D-Day and V-E Day, this fascinating account follows six Monuments men (a special force of American and British museum directors, curators, and art historians) and their impossible mission to save the world's great art from the Nazis.  The movie adaptation of this book was the kick-off movie in this summer's film festival.

Join us for a wonderful evening of fellowship as we delve into this exciting and dynamic book.  We will meet at 6:00 p.m. in the Parish House for potluck and discussion.  Please bring a dish to share and a beverage of choice.  All are welcome.  If you have questions, please contact the Rev. Vicki Mouradian at church, 969-4771.

In Memoriam

It is with great sadness that we inform the parish that several faithful All Saints members have died recently.  Sam Smith, Corrie Vande Beek, Bob Magee, and Mary Griggs all passed away in the last ten days.  Details of memorial services for each will be announced as they are confirmed.

Eternal rest, grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.  May they rest in peace. Amen.  May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.  Amen.
