June 12, 2014
Greetings!

Last night we kicked off this summer's film festival with the screening of Monuments Men.  Each Wednesday in this series the Parish Hall will be transformed into a movie theatre, complete with professional sound, high definition projection, fresh-popped popcorn, Red Vines and soft drinks.  A list of the movies we'll show can be found below

This is a series you surely will not want to miss, so save the dates!  This is a great opportunity to invite a friend to All Saints - you can come for just the movie at 7 p.m. or join us for the Eventide service and dinner on the lawn beginning at 6 p.m.  See you next Wednesday!

Steve O'Connor

P.S. If you liked the movie version of Monuments Men, you may be interested to know that the Book Group will be discussing the book at their next meeting, July 14.

Celebration of the Holy Spirit, Parish Family, Baptism on Amazing Day of Pentecost

I bless your eyes, that you may see God's image in everything.

I bless your ears, that you may hear the cries of the poor.

I bless your lips, that you may speak nothing but the gospel of Jesus.

I bless your hands, that everything you give and everything you receive may be a sacrament.

I bless your feet, that you may run to those who need you.

Thank you to everyone who came to worship and help us celebrate the birth of the Church and the gift of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday. It's safe to say that the day had everything - glorious worship with gospel and bluegrass music, the baptism of three new members of the Body of Christ, fellowship, a BBQ picnic, live bluegrass music on the patio, games, face-painting and yes: fun! (Yes: that was toe-tapping and clapping to "Down by the Riverside" in the 10 a.m. service!)

If you were unable to make it on Sunday or would simply like to relive the day, a selection of photos have been uploaded to our Flickr page and our Facebook page. Also, if you would like to read Rev. Bob's latest blog "Pentecost: Birthday of the Church" you can do so by clicking here.

Father's Day in Focus This Sunday

Father Bob's dad: Fred Honeychurch

God, bless all the fathers in the world. Guide them to be good role models and loving to all their children. Help them to be a father like You are. Give them grace and patience to handle all situations, people and our families in a loving way.

Amen

With Father's Day on Sunday we will be gathering photos of our fathers (and the people in that have been significant father figures in our lives) to display on our altar for both of our services. You can bring those pictures in to the Church Office this week and then retrieve them any time after the conclusion of the 10 a.m. service.

Altar Guild Sets Next Meeting for June 22
Altar Guild members Peg Ittner and Mary Rosenberger

The Altar Guild's next meeting is set for June 22 at 9:15 a.m. in the Parish House Living Room.  Think about joining this gathering if you'd like to learn more about this ministry.  The Altar Guild is a lay ministry to serve God in His house by preparing the Sanctuary for worship, maintaining and caring for the sacred vessels, altar linens, and vestments, and serving the clergy and the parish.

If you are curious about the Altar Guild's role at All Saints, or would like to join, please come to this meeting or touch base with Director Daphne Von Essen.

Forum on Aging Well
Senior Planning Services of Santa Barbara will be coming to All Saints by-the-Sea on Thursday, June 26, to present a seminar on Aging Well/Aging at Home.  Join parishioners from the other M4 churches in the Parish Hall to hear the first of a two part series on this topic.  "Mind, Body, Nutrition, and Movement" will be the focus of this session, with a further session focusing on "Financial Well Being" will be held in July.

The concept of aging well to promote health and well-being is fundamental to increasing length and quality of life.  Aging Well/Aging at Home promotes personal behaviors and environments that reduce functional decline to help older adults maintain their independence and health, emphasizing the idea that people can maintain satisfying and healthy lives as they age.

Book Group to Meet, July 14book

All Saints' Book Group will meet next on Monday, July 14, to discuss The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History by Robert M. Edsel with Bret Witter.  Focusing on the eleven-month period between D-Day and V-E Day, this fascinating account follows six Monuments men (a special force of American and British museum directors, curators, and art historians) and their impossible mission to save the world's great art from the Nazis.  The movie adaptation of this book was the kick-off movie in this summer's film festival.

Join us for a wonderful evening of fellowship as we delve into this exciting and dynamic book.  We will meet at 6:00 p.m. in the Parish House for potluck and discussion.  Please bring a dish to share and a beverage of choice.  All are welcome.  If you have questions, please contact the Rev. Vicki Mouradian at church, 969-4771.

Carlos Ruano Update
We are very pleased to report that, at his hearing before the U.S. Immigration Court in Los Angeles on June 4, Carlos Ruano was notified that his motion to reopen his case seeking resident status based on political asylum had been granted, and that he is permitted to remain in the United States pending a hearing on that matter. At the same time Carlos's attorney filed a separate petition for adjustment of his status to that of resident alien. The court set June 25, 2015, as the hearing date for both his asylum case and his adjustment of status petition. A temporary work permit should routinely issue to Carlos within the next 90 days.

Save the Date: Wise Women Meet June 22
Wise Women is inviting all parishioners (Wise Women and Men) to hear Annemarie Cameron of the Mental Wellness Center speak on June 22 about their programs as well as addressing the recent tragedy in Isla Vista.  The Mental Wellness Center is an All Saints Outreach recipient whose mission is to provide support, guidance and resources to family members of those with a relative with a mental health need.

Volunteers are needed to help supply our usual $5 lunch as our regular lunch provider, parishioner Linda Chapman has a broken leg.  Please contact Judy Mack at 805/882-1917 to volunteer.

movieAll Saints 2nd Annual Film Festival

The Parish Hall will be transformed into a movie theater, complete with professional sound, HD projection, fresh-popped popcorn, Red Vines and soft drinks.  We'll feature a different movie each Wednesday evening after Eventide through July 9.

O Brother, Where Art Thou?
We'll enjoy an eclectic line up of films, which began last night with the newly released "Monuments Men." The remaining line up looks like this:
June 18: O Brother, Where Art Thou?
June 25: Frozen
July 2: As Good As It Gets
July 9: Fried Green Tomatoes

See you at the movies!

Thanks to St. Mike's Volunteers

A big thank you goes out to eight All Saints parishioners and other volunteers from St. Mike's and Trinity for staffing two voting precincts in the St. Mike's chapel in Isla Vista from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm for the Tuesday, June 3 Statewide Primary Election.

The volunteers donated their stipends totaling approximately $1,100 to benefit St. Mike's.
