May 7, 2014
Greetings!

We have come to that time of the year when most pause to honor their mothers and mother figures.  Through the efforts of Anna Jarvis, Mother's Day began in 1907.  Anna wanted to honor her own mother who had died several years previously, and she tirelessly pursued the cause of making Mother's Day a national holiday, succeeding in 1914.  Ann was not prepared for the onslaught of commercial activity that would soon become associated with the holiday and she spent the rest of her life and her inheritance protesting against the commercialization of Mother's Day.

Mother's Day is what we make of it, and being a mother, I fully recognize that no sum or commercial venture can equal the words or thoughtfulness of my children.  With them I feel richly blessed..

May Mother's Day for you be a matter of the heart whether in giving or receiving.

The Rev. Vicki Mouradian

Interim Associate Rector

Celebrating Mothers at All Saints
Dorothy Anne Honeychurch
Mothers' Day is this Sunday!. As a part of our celebrations we will be offering special prayers for all our mothers, and all who have served that mothering role for us in our lives. One of the visual representations that day will be a collection of pictures on our altar of all those who have been our mothers - familial, spiritual, and otherwise.

We invite you to bring in a small framed picture for use that morning. You can bring those pictures to the church any time from now until the beginning of the service on May 11 and you will be able to retrieve your pictures any time after the conclusion of our 10 a.m. service that morning.

Discernment Committee Update
The deadline for applications for our Rector position was March 1, and since that date the Discernment Committee has been meeting candidates by video-conference to start narrowing the field.  Having interviewed more than 20 priests in this way, they now have the task of reducing that list to around six that the committee will send representatives to visit in their current parishes.  Discernment Committee chairs Denny Bacon and Andy Rosenberger report that this will be hard work as there have been a number of truly exceptional candidates.

Book Club Selects Classic; Meets Monday

Art Show in the Church Office: May 11
All Saints is blessed with a great number of visual artists, working in a variety of media.  Every two months, a new artist hangs their work in the Church Office for parishioners and visitors to enjoy.  The works on display in May and June belong to parishioner Jennifer Riley, whose abstract photography uses found reflections to wonderful effect.

This Sunday, May 11, after both services, Jennifer will host a reception in the Church Office for all to view her work.  Plan to get your coffee and head across the street!
Baptism Opportunity at Pentecost

Pentecost is right around the corner and it's the next time that we celebrate baptisms at All Saints. If you or someone you love wishes to be baptized on Pentecost Sunday, June 8, please contact Fr. Bob by Sunday, May 25, to let him know of your intentions.

There will be special liturgy and music that day to celebrate the birth of the church and the coming of the Holy Spirit.

Volunteer Opportunity: Best Day Foundation

Best Day Foundation is an All Saints Outreach recipient that helps children with special needs build confidence and self-esteem through safe, fun, water activities like surfing and kayaking. Volunteers are needed for two upcoming Best Days: May 31 and June 1.  Parishioners of all ages and mobility are encouraged to come and check out the fun on Saturday to see if they'd like to return on Sunday to help.  There is a job for everyone.  Contact parishioner Heather Smith or click the link below for more details

Special Music at All Saints
One of the things worshippers at All Saints enjoy is the occasional presence of professional guest musicians throughout the year.  While this is especially true during our Easter and Christmas Eve services, the summer months also bring a variety of musical guests who enhance our worship.  They are a particularly welcome addition during these Sundays in which our All Saints Choir rests.

The cost for these highly trained, professional artists is approximately $300 for a Sunday morning, which is paid for in whole by your financial support of our All Saints Special Music fund.We need your help to support the cost of this year's summer musical guests.  Your generous contribution to All Saints' Special Music Fund will enable us to invite a wide variety of artists to our worship again this year.  Thank you for supporting the music of All Saints-by-the-Sea.
