Sometime between the end of worship this Sunday and sundown on Shrove Tuesday (March 4) a star will fall at All Saints. Specifically, the large star now positioned above the high altar, placed there for the season of Epiphany, will come down as we transition into the new season of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday, March 5.

 

Since January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany, the Church has celebrated the various "epiphanies" of Jesus' divinity after his birth, including the coming of the Magi, Christ's baptism, and the Presentation of Our Lord in the Temple, also called Candlemas where Christ's light to the world is recognized in the blessing of the Church's candles. During these six weeks of the Season after Epiphany, like the Wise Men we have followed the star, the "bright light" of Christ, as his divinity has been made known to us.  

 

As we transition from the season of Epiphany into the season of Lent, you are encouraged to "catch a falling star," that is, to receive the saving Light of Christ and welcome into your life, the abundant gifts of God.

A Newcomers Brunch will be held after the 10 a.m. service this Sunday in the Parish House Living Room.  There will be presenters on various aspects of our church life and a chance to get to know some more members of the parish, including the clergy.

On the first Sunday of the month, instead of Sunday School, children of all ages and their parents are invited to join together in the Parish Hall at 10 a.m. for "Family Feast," a service of worship and communion aimed especially at families with children and teens.   

 

Beginning this Sunday, All Saints will present God, Music and Fun, a music education series for children and families, after Family Feast ends.  Through the media of singing, dance, rhythm activities and playing musical instruments, we will learn the stories of God's saving work in the world through the art of music.  See you there! 

 

All parishioners are invited to a drop-in pancake supper next Tuesday, March 4.  Shrove Tuesday is traditionally celebrated as a day to use up rich, fatty ingredients before the fasting season of Lent.  With eggs, milk and sugar to use up, pancakes were a popular dish to make.

 

Volunteers will be serving up pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausages from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Parish Hall, please drop by and mark the end of Epiphany before we start Lent with Ash Wednesday the following day.  A donation of $5 per person ($15 max for families) is suggested.

 

Please note that there will be no Eventide supper on Ash Wednesday, March 5.

 

• At noon, we will gather at the Church for a traditional observance of the day, including the imposition of ashes and Holy Communion.

• At 6 p.m., the Ash Wednesday liturgy will be incorporated into our regularly scheduled Eventide service, and will also include the imposition of ashes and Holy Communion.  In a break with the normal Wednesday evening schedule, there will be no dinner following Eventide on Ash Wednesday.  

Please join us at either noon or 6 p.m. as we enter into this most sacred season of Lent.

Richard Schaper, Certified Financial Planner and former gift planning officer of the Diocese of California, to help us consider creative and prudent steps we might take to best accomplish our wishes for our loved ones and our church. Join the All Saints community after Eventide worship and supper for a Lenten Study.  Beginning Wednesday, March 12, and continuing on the next five consecutive Wednesdays (March 19, 26 and April 2, 9, 16) at 7:15 p.m. in the Parish House, we will study the powerful story of Holy Week as told in the four gospels.

Parishioners of all ages are encouraged to join members of the other M4 churches in a Habitat for Humanity work day taking place next month.  The work will start at 9 a.m. and end at noon on Saturday, March 22, at the Habitat for Humanity construction site on Canon Perdido St.  

 

All Saints volunteers worked at the project in November 2013, and expected tasks at the next work day will include painting, finish carpentry, attaching cabinet hardware, landscaping, and caulking. Join the revelry at All Saints on St. Patrick's Day in the Parish Hall.  No blarney about it, we will imbibe in Irish drink and feast on Irish fare while we enjoy many an Irish tune.  Dinner will be catered by parishioner Connie Lindberg with a suggested donation for the evening of $10 per person.  Soft drinks will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own beer or wine to enliven the feast. 

Suggested dinner attire: clerical robes mindful of St. Patrick, leprechaun or fairy attire, or in lieu of those suggestions, anything green.  Family and friends are welcome!  Please sign-up at the information table after services or email the Rev. Vicki Mouradian to RSVP.
