Diocese of LA

Greetings!,

This Sunday, February 2, we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord, also known as Candlemas.  Dating from the fourth century, Candlemas is one of the most ancient celebrations of the church in which we recall one of the early episodes in Jesus' life.

According to the gospel, Mary and Joseph took the baby Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem forty days after his birth to complete Mary's ritual purification after childbirth, and to perform the redemption of the firstborn, in obedience to the Law of Moses.  Upon bringing Jesus into the temple, they encountered Simeon. The Gospel records that Simeon had been promised that "he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ" (Luke 2:26). Simeon prayed the prayer that would become known as the Nunc Dimittis, or Canticle of Simeon, which prophesied the redemption of the world by Jesus.

From this is derived the annual custom of blessing the candles in the church, known as Candlemas, a Feast of Light.  Join us this Sunday, February 2 at 10 a.m. when our choir will open the service, the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord, with the traditional Candlemas procession.

 NewcomersNewcomers' Campus Tour

11:15 p.m.    Sunday    February 2

There will be a walking tour of our campus after the 10 a.m. service this Sunday.  Though this tour has been designed for Newcomers to our congregation, all are invited.  If there are more tourists than is practical for one group we may have to schedule another tour for long-time parishioners.

Please get a cup of coffee and meet at the pink table after the 10 a.m. service this Sunday. The tour will last 30 - 40 minutes.

 BookTableBook Table: Back in Business!

Sunday    February 2

The All Saints Book Table resumes on the patio after services this Sunday, February 2. Our educational and inspirational selection of books will be on sale the first and third Sundays of each month, and more frequently during special liturgical seasons.

Come browse and see what's new! Our Book Table will have selections of interest to you, your family or friends, and children. Our inventory is predominantly from the Cathedral Bookstore located at the Cathedral Center for our Los Angeles Diocese and twenty percent of our sales are returned to us for All Saints' outreach.

In addition to the Rev. Vicki Mouradian, volunteers for this ministry are Kathie Deviny, Pamela Hawes, and Marni McGee. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact The Rev. Vicki by email or through the church office: (805) 969-7441, ext. 110.

 WiseWomenFebruary WiseWomen Date Change

11:15 a.m.    Sunday    February 16

Due to the scheduling of the Annual Meeting on February 23, the Wise Women of the parish (along with a good number of men!) will gather the week before, on Sunday, February 16 at 11:30 a.m. in the Parish Hall for another highly entertaining and thought-provoking program.  Nearly 13 million people have viewed an online TED Talk by Bren Brown, who studies human connection - our ability to empathize, belong, love.  In a poignant, funny talk, Dr. Brown shares a deep insight from her research, one that sent her on a personal quest to know herself as well as to understand humanity.  Plan to attend!

Lunch is provided; please bring $5 to cover the cost.  Please rsvp via email to [email protected] or call the Church Office at 805-969-4771.

 Office Ministry: Help Needed!

Office Help Needed!  As we continue to pray for Anne Hopkinson, our indispensable Special Events and Volunteer Coordinator, who badly broke her ankle a week ago, we are in need of office assistance. Anne will be away from the Church Office for some time and we could use some volunteer help to answer the phones through the week and take on some of Anne's many weekly tasks. If you have a few hours you could spend at the front desk of the Church Office in the coming weeks, please contact Robbie Boyd at (805) 969-4771 or [email protected] and let him know your availability.  Charming British accent desirable but not required!

There is a rumor that Father Paul is going to be answering phones tomorrow!  Check back in the weekly parish next week email to find out for sure, and perhaps see photos!

Did You Pray for Rain?

Last week's parish email included a Prayer for Rain.  Did you happen to add your prayers?  Do you believe in prayer?  You may have noticed that on Sunday, just before the 10 a.m. service, rain drops started to fall.  And during the service, enough rain poured down to be heard during service!  Imagine if the ENTIRE parish of All Saints prayed for rain during the coming week!  Let's try it and see what happens NEXT Sunday?!

"God, you send rains in season. It is a season of need in Santa Barbara, in California, and in the West. Find a small and willing cloud sitting bored over the ocean, and give it a push toward us. Make a strong wind for us, not strong enough to hurt and destroy, but filled with moisture and send it us.

We ask you for rain. Let the drought unite many millions to ask you for help. We trust in you. You made the world to need the waters of heaven. You made the world to need the waters of life. You are the source of rain. We ask you: Let it rain. In your Son's name, we pray. Amen."
