We start 2016 with probably the most rare of our 50th Anniversary Daytona Cobra Coupe models. CSX 2286 was the first serial number of the Coupes but was the last one to be built. It ran only once, at Le Mans in '65 driven by American racing hero Dan Gurney and Jerry Grant. Gurney no longer travels but during a special visit we made to his shop in December we're able to offer this model set (model, photograph and description letter) with his autographs. Details below.
We're excited to have an Aerovault on display at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale next week. See below for details to stop by and say hello.
Also mentioned below is a fun photo shoot with my Daytona Coupe at the Las Vegas Neon Museum, info on the Amelia Island Concours where I will join the DeTomaso P70 I designed for Shelby in '64 and the fun Concours in the Hills event in the Phoenix area in February. We also share some disturbing news from a break-in at Goodwood.

Dan Gurney as Active as Ever
We had a great visit with one of my personal heroes in December |
Dan continues to amaze me. Even though he doesn't travel anymore his inventiveness is limitless. Seen here he is showing me his latest ideas on engine development. He has a new Gator in the works (the revolutionary motorcycle he created years ago). His work in composites is something I've never seen before. His company has slowly been taking over the entire block his original All American Racers shop occupied.
He mentioned he was interested in our aerodynamic car trailers, the Aerovault. As luck would have it, we had brought one into California with us and it was sitting just outside his office. Dan and his sons Justin (pictured between Dan and I) and Alex (far right) filed out to check it out with Justin saying it was perfect for when they take Dan's Eagle racers to shows. What a fun day to share our respective projects after all these years.

Visit Us at Barrett-Jackson Next Week
With an Aerovault in tow we join the festivities of this 9 day event
|
I don't know about you but I think this is a beautiful sight! One of these Aerovaults left last week for its new owner in Colorado. A second one leaves for GA this week and another one next week for N.C. The fourth of these beauties Gayle and I will be taking to the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale for display next week. Look us up next Friday through Sunday (Jan 29-31). We will be 50 feet from where the cars exit the auction stage and right across from the Cessna display (we're thinking you can find it as they'll have a few jets on display).
We'll also have my Corvette books for sale there. I'll be signing them and whatever else you bring by. It promises to be a great time.

CSX 2286 the first, yet last, Coupe
The next model in our 50th Anniversary series has a special story |
Only 25! of this numbered set is available which includes this extremely accurate model and an archive photo of Gurney racing CSX 2286 at Le Mans both autographed by Dan Gurney along with a letter describing the history and uniqueness of CSX 2286 written and autographed by myself.
In the description letter that comes with this model set, I tell the story of CSX 2286 as the Coupe with "one of the most interesting non-race histories of the six Coupes built by Shelby American". Being the earliest serial number one would think it was the first Coupe built, but it was actually the last car completed! The bare chassis for CSX 2286 arrived via air freight from the UK along with CSX 2287 in Venice California in late 1963. As CSX 2287 was closest to the shop door it became the prototype, while CSX 2286 was given the less glamorous, but more important, job of being the chassis template for any succeeding Coupes should the prototype prove worthy.
Only 25 (numbered) of this model set are being offered. This model set contains the following items, with each displaying a matching numbered seal (e.g. 01/50, 02/50):
- Model: This amazingly accurate and detailed 1:43rd scale model of CSX 2286 as it ran its only race at Le Mans in 1965, autographed by driver Dan Gurney.
- Archive Photo: A high quality photo reprint of an archive photo showing Gurney coming out of the Mulsanne straight the first few hours of the race, autographed by Gurney.
- Detailed Description: A description, numbered, written and autographed by myself describing the unique history of CSX 2286 and how it ran its only race, Le Mans in 1965.

Goodwood Theft
U.K. Detectives appeal to public for information
|
We are eternally grateful to Lord March for gathering together at his annual Goodwood Revival event, all six Daytona Cobra Coupes for the first time in history, as seen here. Upon our return we watched a very informative and entertaining PBS program called "Great Houses" on the history of Goodwood that explained how the family came to prominence which included an amazing emerald ring Charles II gave his mistress, Louise de Kerouallewhich, which had their initials CL carved into the top.
You can watch the entire episode here.
Consequently we were mortified to learn that Goodwood was broken into a few days ago, Lord March struck with a blunt instrument and injured, he and his wife tied-up and among many other valuables, the historic emerald ring stolen. Authorities in England are asking for the public's help here with any information and of course everyone should be on the lookout for the stolen valuables. We share this information in the slim chance that by doing so it may reach someone who can help. |
February and March are Concours Time
Concours in the Hills followed by annual trek to Amelia |
February 13th we will be back in the Phoenix area for our first visit to the Concours in the Hills in Fountain Hills, AZ (northeast of Scottsdale). It will be a fun time with Grand Marshals Bob Bondurant and Arie Luyendyk. We will have an Aerovault on display and hope to see you there! Details are available here.
March takes us back to the Amelia Island Concours. I've been there from the beginning some 21 years ago. Along with my regular judging duties and book signings, a highlight for me this year will be the showing of the DeTomaso P70 (seen above) that I designed in Italy while working for Shelby in 1964.

If You Happen to be on a Highway in Japan
Check out my Daytona Coupe in the latest Kurumag magazine |
We really love the energy of Las Vegas and took this to new heights during a photo shoot of my Coupe for Kurumag magazine. In this special issue focused on Design, my Coupe is captured in the Vegas Neon Museum. This place is a site to see, gathering together in one location the mammoth, iconic neon signs early Vegas made famous... the perfect backdrop to my red Coupe.
Kurumag is not on newsstands and can instead be found at highway stops in Japan. I am seen here with the Kurumag design issue, Kurumag Chief Editor Shigeyuki Ishikawa (center) and friend, writer and photographer Yujiro "Yuji" Otsuki. You can check out the magazine here.

A great start to 2016
We start the year with probably the most rare Coupe model we're going to offer with Gurney, along with the Bondurant and Breedlove models still available. Next week we're going to enjoy the great sights and weather of Scottsdale at the Barrett-Jackson auction (be sure to stop by if you'll be there), followed by the Concours in the Hills and being reunited with the DeTomaso P70 at Amelia.
Somewhere in the middle there, on February 20th, at the newly remodeled Petersen Automotive Museum we're holding a 50th Anniversary reunion of my BRE team which I founded after I left Shelby American at the end of 1965. We built the cars I designed post-Shelby such as the BRE Hino Samurai, the Triumph TR-250K, the Toyota JP6 and we won four national championships with our Datsun racers. Attendance will be limited to 200 so if you're interested in joining us, don't hesitate to get your tickets at the Petersen here. The website is a bit confusing. Go to this page, scroll down and select the BRE Reunion event. Once on the reunion pop-up page look for the word "more" right above the map at the bottom of the screen. When you get the page to expand you will see where you can purchase tickets and RSVP for the reunion (you have to do both). Questions? Just let us know and we'll help guide you through it!
We hope to see you somewhere soon!
