BRE Datsun Issue #047:

2015 Schedule, Model Update and more

June 15, 2015

With this being the 50th anniversary of both the Ford Mustang and the FIA World Championship of the Daytona Cobra Coupe, we haven't been engaged in a lot of Datsun/Nissan specific activities of late. We love how you guys have come out to those other events though. The Shelby Norcal group had their annual gathering at the Blackhawk Museum when I spoke there in May. The museum curator was overheard coming in from the parking lot saying; "I've never seen so many great looking Datsuns!" Thank you for coming out to this "Shelby" event.

Below we share some highlights from the rest of the year's calendar and that includes a special tribute to Mr. K at the Spring Mountain track this October (Mr. K passed away in February at the wonderful age of 105).  Mr. K and Peter Brock are seen here at Mr. K's 100th birthday celebration in Hamamatsu Japan.  What a joyous life to celebrate!

We also have an update below on those 1:18 scale BRE 510 models. Boy has that project been a ride! And surprise, while waiting for the models to come in we created something you've been asking for... BRE drinking glasses!

We hope to see you at one of the events mentioned below soon,

Gayle & Peter Brock

Losing Mr. K
He Affected Us All in the Very Best of Ways

In February, we lost one of the most incredible people we have ever known, Mr. Katayama. An avid automotive enthusiast that made Datsun a household name in America, he changed the world for all of us. He showed us how strength and leadership can be accomplished with grace. With us until the age of 105 he gave us more than we could ever have hoped. He lives on within all of us and the cars we cherish. (Mr. K and Peter Brock seen here at the unveiling of the BRE Trans-Am 510s at Ontario, CA in 1971)

A tribute to Mr. K will be held by VARA (Vintage Auto Racing Assoc) October 9-11 at the Spring Mountain Motor Resort in Pahrump, NV (an hour outside Las Vegas). Please join us and make this the best showing of Datsuns and Nissans ever! Event details can be found here.

"Zeal" Art Prints Autographed by Mr. K
Hector Cademartori's art is only overshadowed by the largess of his heart

Hector's limited edition (350 pieces) Zeal art prints are autographed by Mr. K, Peter Brock, John Morton and artist Hector Cademartori. This being one of the very last items Mr. K signed, there was concern upon Mr. K's passing that they would be bought up by people of ill intent to auction off on ebay at sensational prices. There was discussion regarding if the prices of the prints should be increased or if the prints should be pulled from the market temporarily to deter these opportunists from buying them.

In the end, Hector decided to not change the price of the prints or pull them. His reasoning is that we must trust each other to do the right thing. Mr. K would no doubt agree. We hope that if we keep word of these autographed prints within the Datsun community they will continue to be owned and respected by the people Mr. K loved.

There are still a few autographed prints available here which we want to go to the right homes.

Non-Datsun Oriented 2015 Events

Will we be in your area?

Even though these events are not focused on our beloved Datsuns, if we're in your area we'd love to see you out for these and bring your car(s) if possible. Datsuns impress everyone!  Select on any event to get more details

See farther below for events focused on Datsuns!

1:18 Scale BRE 510 Models
The Models us 510 fans have been waiting for.. for years!

We have been really surprised by these resin models. First, they look great but we expected that. Second, they look and feel just like a die-cast model with the exception that the hood and doors don't open. They even weigh the same as die-cast. However, there have been a lot of issues with these models getting made and to the U.S. One of the reasons we like working with Sunrich model company is they don't compromise. They understand how important it is to get every detail correct, and there are a lot of details on BRE cars to get right! They have spent the time to get the models right and not accepted anything less.  The wait will be worth it but it doesn't mean the journey through production and shipping delays (think 3 month dockworker slowdown on the west coast) hasn't been painful.

For those people that put in pre-orders with us, we have been keeping you apprised of the details as we have had them. We will spare everyone these details here. The current status we have to share:

  • 1:18 scale BRE 510 #46 models are produced, have arrived in the U.S., have cleared customs and we will have our inventory of them here by Thursday
  • We are sold out. Yes, we will have enough models to fill pre-orders but that is all the models we will receive. In other words, our inventory of models is sold out even before we received them.
  • We have been told this was a partial production run and more will be manufactured. At this time we do not have a date for when that will happen. We will let you know of course when we do.
  • 1:18 scale BRE 510 #85 models are also being produced. We were taking pre-orders for them but have stopped until we have a firm arrival date. We will let you know when we have this.

That's a lot of information for what seems like not much progress. However, anyone who has already ordered a #46 510 model from us will receive it in approximately a week and there will be more to come for everyone else.

How About a Summer Drink Instead?
In lieu of models we fulfilled a long standing request

You've been asking for them and now they're here! BRE drinking glasses.

As always, we look for the best examples we can find of what you're asking for. It took us a while but we finally found the glass with the right "fit".

The shape fits perfectly in your hand. Comfortable and classic with the BRE logo, these will look great in your hand or on your shelf.

BRE 240Z Die-Cast Models Dwindling

We don't think we'll see die-cast models like this anymore

The cost to manufacture models has been increasing dramatically the last couple of years. We suspect there may not be any future BRE Datsun die-cast cars and we know of no plans for future BRE 240Z models.

There are currently a lot of disappointed 510 fans that didn't get their model order in before the models ran out.  Don't let that happen if you're a 240Z fan.

We have five of the 1:43rd scale BRE 240Z #46 die-cast models by Kyosho left as well as their impressive 1:18 scale models. If you ever think you might want one you shouldn't wait to go here.

Hemmings Saratoga Concours'
This is where we need to bring out the Datsuns!

Peter Brock will be the guest of honor at the car events in Saratoga Springs, NY September 25-27. We rarely get to the Northeast and this is our opportunity to see all the Datsun fans there. Not only will there be original BRE team Datsuns there but this event is a really wonderful weekend of activities.

Friday you can take a cruise on scenic Lake George (on a boat). Saturday there's a different kind of cruise-in that you can drive your car (Datsun!) into the "Cruise-In Car Show". Saturday evening is dinner and my keynote presentation. Sunday is the impressive Saratoga Automobile Museum September 25th through 27th.

Event details can be found here. We hope to see all our Datsun friends at some point during this fun weekend!

In Closing

It comes down to the following events for us to be focused on Datsuns. In the East we have the Saratoga Concours' weekend and in the West we have Monterey in August and the Mr. K Tribute in Pahrump, NV in October. Due to date conflicts we can't attend the JCCS this year but we always recommend the Japanese Car Classic Show in Long Beach in September. JCCS details here.

We will keep you updated on the 1:18 scale #46 and #85 BRE 510 models. They ARE worth waiting for.

In the meantime enjoy a cool one in your new BRE glasses! While you're at it, make it a class act and wear your BRE t-shirt at the same time. We still have some discontinued shirts left and a good quantity of our favorites, the BRE 3 Champions shirt and the BRE History shirt. And still some of those BRE 240Z Legend shirts we made last year to commemorate BRE's restored 240Z (seen here).  Check them all out here.
