BRE/Peter Brock Designs News Issue #034:

How can it be December?

December 3, 2014

It's been a busy year. I mean, really, it's December? It's all good stuff though and we've enjoyed seeing many of you throughout the year. Gayle counted up that we traveled to more than 20 events this year. The best part is that many of them were new experiences for us and dog Kit traveled with us to most of them.

We recap a few events below which cover Cobras, Corvettes, Datsuns and more. I know many of us have preferred marques but for me the best thing is to learn about them all. It helps put any of our preferences in context. In that spirit, when the office was brainstorming specials for the holidays, I wanted to offer a special on my book on the creation of the Corvette Sting Ray. Gayle gasped at the discount I wanted to offer but she came around (-: for the holiday season. Details are below.

We were also busy this year with our Aerovault trailers, completing our showroom, finalizing our DMV manufacturer and dealer licenses and having an Open House during SEMA week, showing the first MKII trailer. Full production is just weeks away!

We hope you enjoy the read below, and the videos we point you to,

Peter (& Gayle) Brock

A Year in Quick Review
Several new experiences made it a great year
Peter in Washington DC

In January alone we were 1) in Phoenix for a 50th reunion of the Daytona Coupe at LeMans, the Bondurants' Charity Gala and the inaugural Arizona Concours', 2) we then went to the Detroit Auto Show for Nissan's U.S. unveiling of their IDx concept cars, a tribute to our 1969-1972 BRE Datsun racers and 3) we were in D.C. for Daytona Coupe CSX2287 to be the first vehicle inducted into the US State Department's Registry of Historic Vehicles.

On the Corvette side of the world, in April I spoke at the wonderful Blackhawk Museum in Danville, CA and in June we attended the massive Bloomington Gold event in Indiana for the first time.

Other firsts were attending the Datsun Roadster show in Solvang, CA. It's tough to beat beautiful Solvang as a place for more than 100 little Datsuns to gather. Once we get past the holidays we'll post our new 2015 calendar on our website in the INFO / Schedule section.

Addressing Your Questions on Video
They put me in front of a camera and asked me your questions

I hope you've been watching our new videos on the Peter Brock's World YouTube Channel. In one of the latest videos I answer the question of why I have a Chevy LS7 engine in my Coupe.

If you go here (Chapter 2 in my Book Series on the Corvette Sting Ray) part way through you'll find out, along with more of my history with engines. We'd love to hear your comments, including if you want to see more videos and on what topics.

Superformance Coupe SPC0115
Another great Daytona Coupe is ready for a really happy owner

If you've been following us for a while, you know that occasionally we come across a really special Coupe that needs a good home or needs help, or both. We've known Superformance Coupe SPC0115 since its first owner bought it in 2006 and had the install done. The car was done right.

Since that owner, the original carburation was changed out for an 8 stack fuel injection system. Impressive looking but like so many, the fuel injection management system was problematic. Upon procuring the car, we decided to leave the beautiful 8 stack in place but to completely replace the fuel management system and ALL the wiring. We turned to Tom Barnard of Speedway Classic Cars who does many of the Shelby installs. He said the FAST management system is the only way to go. The FAST state-of-the-art system learns over time so it becomes one with any car it's in. An expert in the field, we had Tom do the installation and the re-wiring. It has been well worth it.

The car runs so well it's easy to focus on how well it drives and forget all of the BRE upgrades and accessories we've installed as well (optically perfect rear window, elegant and useable side mirrors, a full complement of BRE instrumentation and long lasting and clean looking headlight and driving light covers). And as always, whenever we get a Coupe we go end-to-end inspecting and fixing all the issues these cars can be known to have.

We're selling this car to help fund the start-up of Aerovault production. See all the details here and spread the word!

The Holiday Special I Wanted to Offer You
30% off my book with another BRE purchase

I was shocked at the beginning of this year when my book on my years at GM Styling, which includes my '57 sketch that became the Corvette Sting Ray, won the Motor Press Guild's Book of the Year Award.

My idea for a holiday special is to offer you a 30% discount on my book when purchasing other items on the BRE website such as any piece of apparel, art, poster or archive photograph and you get a $20 discount off the book. Just go to the website here  and when purchasing any eligible product you'll see the option to purchase the book with the discount. This special doesn't appear on Amazon or Ebay, just to our BRE friends.

Add a description It took Gayle a few hours to apply this special to so many products on the website. She's the first to say she may have missed a few. So if you want an item and you don't see the special book offer on it, just send us a note here or call us at 702-558-3374 and we'll get it done!

If you'd like to hear more about the book, you can see my interview with Jay Leno here.

Happy Holidays
There's nothing we like more than making someone's day

Now that the holiday season is upon us I thought I'd share with you, via video, some of my favorite Cobra memorabilia that we have on the walls at BRE and in books we offer. Watch me talk here about some of the history behind the pieces we have in our shop.

In addition to Cobra items you'll see on the video, we have several great Corvette posters, even the official, original Monterey Historics posters from 2002 when Corvette was the featured marque. Another interesting piece is a quarter mile shot showing a Cobra roadster and a C2 Corvette coming off the line. Add my autograph and with one signature you cover the history of both of these cars!

Three shown here, we offer all Shelby American Museum posters here

Two at a time Le Mans '65
Stunning GT350
Awesome Sebring '65

We offer a wide variety of posters and art here

If you want to give art, there's nothing like George Bartell lithographs (we also have many original pieces as well). We've found it very difficult to show the details and colors of these pieces appropriately on the website here but we liked what we saw when we videotaped me talking about how I met George, how I came to hire him to create the illustrations for the Shelby ads, the magic components of his art and showing several of his pieces. View the video here

In addition to the numerous lithographs we offer, this is an example of the Original art that's available here

Amazing piece of "The King", Richard Petty
Ferdinand Porsche and his racers

Senna!

Emotions will move you with this Alex Zanardi piece
You'll never find another Mark Martin like this!
Sarah Fisher was a phenom

By the way, we had someone get upset with us on ebay because we had a piece listed as having George's signature. Knowing that George had passed away last year, they thought the signature was a reproduction and that our description was misleading. When they found out that signed pieces we have are live signatures signed by George when he was still with us they went from upset to puzzled as to why the art isn't priced at hundreds of dollars. It's a good time to get a deal here.

Books are always a great gift and we always try to make our book offerings special. With John Morton's book on the Shelby Years, the books we offer are autographed by John. Sylvia Wilkinson's book on my BRE team (The Stainless Steel Carrot) is autographed by Sylvia, John (a prominent figure in the book) and myself (team owner and manager).  With the Mustang Fifty Years book we include a reprint of the first GT350 ad, which I created before Ford became more involved in the program.  Also, I'm more than happy to write a personal note into any book for you or whoever you plan to give it to.

With Carroll's biography we include a photo of he and I at the driving school
Incredible details and pics
SAAC registries are a must for researching these cars.  Three registries cover:
1) Cobras and GT40s,
2) Shelby Mustangs '65-66
3) Shelby Mustangs '68-'70

If you need any help to make something special for you or someone else, just give us a call or e-mail us here  or call 702-558-3374. We always have ideas and are more than happy to help.  We can also ship any item directly to your recipient.  If you respond to the e-mail receipt you receive when ordering that it's a gift, we won't include the receipt in the package.  We can include a note saying who it's from if you tell us what to write.

Gifts for Kids
There's nothing like a "Big Deal" Cobra kids shirt

kids cobra shirt Many of us talk about the importance of getting

young people involved, and interested, in cars. There's no better way than to have them strutting around with their own sporty cars on their chests.

We love these shirts with one of the last pieces of art our friend Dave "Big" Deal created (Dave also created the concept cars for Pixar's movie "Cars"). Check these fun shirts out here.

Ladies Love These
Soft, warm and attractive

Cobra sweatshirt2 I have it on good authority that ladies love our fleece-lined 1/4 zip pullovers. They are warm, an attractive navy color and the soft fleece on the inside makes them the perfect comfort top, worn on its own or layered on top.  As the weather has turned, Gayle's been running around in hers all week. Check them out here (and get one of my Corvette books at the same time at a 30% discount).

We also get good reports from the ladies on our long sleeved Cobra t-shirts. Being long sleeved and made of a heavyweight, brushed cotton they are the perfect answer for someone who wants something heavier than a t-shirt but not bulky like a sweatshirt. We have a nice supply of small and medium sized, white or dark gray shirts here.

Aerovault Trailer Update
New composite roof and side skirts showcased in unveiling

It was a pretty busy SEMA week for us, including the unveiling of our new Aerovault MKII. The new composite roof makes the Aerovault even more aerodynamic (and stylish) than the first breakthrough model. The composite roof and fenders reduce the weight of this already lightweight aluminum 22' trailer down to an estimated 2200 pounds (standard trailers of this size are easily twice as heavy).

Not only is the Aerovault MKII more aerodynamic and lighter in weight, customers can choose their preferred color. Those concerned about heat can go with a white roof and fenders as seen here. Those that want a more traditional look can choose a silver to blend in with the aluminum components. Ferrari fan? Go red! Cobra Guardsman Blue? Corvette Velocity Yellow?

If you are a member of the SCCA, be sure to check out the story in this December's issue of Sports Car magazine (just out), page 88, by Auto Cross Champion Fred Zust on his experiences with his Aerovault MKI. And then consider that his experiences will only be better with the MKII.

First Up in 2015: "Elegance at Speed" Panel
Arizona Concours' has some special activities this year

Let me give you a reason to be in Phoenix in January (-: Not only will there be the second annual Arizona Concours' held at the Arizona Biltmore Sunday January 11th, but the day before there will be a panel discussion on "Elegance at Speed" that explores how elegance impacts speed technically and aesthetically. Panelists will be myself, Nigel Bennett (designer of several F1 and Indy Cars) and Kip Wesenko (long-time Cadillac designer, including the Le Mans Prototype LMP Cadillac and the Speedvision CTS-VR).

The 2-4pm session will start with each of us giving a 10 minute presentation on what elegance at speed means to us, with visuals to demonstrate our points. The panel moderator, Lyn St. James will then take over. Let me tell you, the questions she's going to ask are spectacular. A most thoughtful and probing discussion will ensue. This is followed by an open Q&A session and a book signing.

We will also have a brand new Aerovault MKII on display. I can't wait! You can find all the details, and buy tickets, here.Note: tickets to the panel on Saturday are separate from tickets to the Concours' on Sunday.

2015: Need a Speaker, Judge, Grand Marshal?
Our calendar fills fast so talk to us soon about your 2015 events

Through the years I've spoken to groups and at events on many topics.  From black-tie Galas to trackside club meets. My presentations span from comprehensive talks on the history of Automotive Design starting back in the early 1900s to specific topics like the origins of the '63 Corvette Sting Ray and the creation of the Daytona Cobra Coupe. You name it and I probably have some history on it and some great photos and sketches to share.

If you run an event and would like me to be part of it, your goal should be to use me to achieve your event goals, which could be to increase attendance, increase publicity, expand your audience, etc. My speaking and appearance rates haven't changed much over the years (not like the increases we've seen in travel expenses). The calendar does fill up quickly however so don't wait to contact us here. Provide details such as dates, audience, size, ideas on what you'd like me to do (e.g. be a speaker, be Grand Marshal, be a judge) and we can send you details on availability and rates.

We currently have videos on topics I speak about on our YouTube Channel.  Go here and select the Peter Brock Speaker Series videos. Take a look to get an idea of what might be of interest to your group. We'll be posting videos on more topics in the future so be sure to "Subscribe" to the channel and you'll be automatically notified when they're posted.

Archive Reprint Changes
Get our archive photos mounted now while you can

Depending on how long you've been following us, you may or may not be aware that our website started in 2005 with a focus on our archive photographs. Over the years Gayle had been going through and organizing all my files (that's what us packrats call boxes and boxes of stuff that we have no idea what's in them). She kept on saying how much people would really love to see the photographs I had kept all these years (decades), like this image I took of Fantuzzi when I was working in Italy designing this car for Shelby and DeTomaso.  Their relationship ultimately fell through and DeTomaso kept the car and called it the DeTomaso P70 with it being a highlight of the Turin Auto Show that year.

When setting up the website we wanted to offer something to visitors. With all of our high-end photojournalism equipment, we decided to scan some of our archive photos and offer high quality reprints (these reprints are so good their quality is often better than the originals). Each reprint comes with a certificate on the back saying it's an official BRE archive reprint. This photo is at Le Mans in 1965.  I handed my camera to someone to capture this moment of (l-r) myself, Alan Grant and a French Official standing next to the Daytona Coupes on pit row.

We've been offering these prints mounted on high quality and sturdy gatorboard.  Mounted photos are a nice way to display photographs as you can place them anywhere and you eliminate the hassle and cost of trying to find frames that look good and fit them.  However, gatorboard is very expensive (foamboard is much cheaper but doesn't hold up and warps easily) and the labor to mount photos on any type of board is extremely intensive. (the photo seen here is of the BRE Hino Samurai I designed for the 1967 Japanese Grand Prix)

Our prices for mounting photos has been less than our cost for quite a while now and frankly, not many people choose the option. We suspect some of that is because we've offered our archives for so long that we never mention them. Consequently, few people are even aware of them!  We will continue to offer this mounting service (at our current less-than-cost prices) until our current supply of gatorboard is gone and then we will discontinue it.

So that's the Holiday Special... get your archive photos with mounting before the option is gone!  Check out our archive photos here.

Daytona Coupe Wins Big, Again
International Historic Motoring Awards
The year is ending on another high note for the Daytona Cobra Coupes, THANKS TO YOU!   Every year, a committee nominates a set of historic cars to be voted on as Best Car of the Year.  Who decides who wins?  You!  A website is setup whereby the public votes for their favorite car.  An American car had never won the award.  That all changed this year when at the ceremony held in London, it was announced that the Daytona Cobra Coupe had won.  You can read the details here of which cars were nominated, found out more about the awards, etcThank you everyone who voted!  You put the U.S. on the International circuit, just like the Daytonas did back in '64 and '65!
Dan Gurney Gets Top Recognition
The Henry Ford honors Dan with Edison-Ford Medal
Only given out one previous time, we can't think of a more deserving recipient of this amazing recognition by The Henry Ford, awarded to Dan on October 29th. From the outside we can have many heroes. It's when we get to know our heroes personally that we find out what they really are. Unfortunately, most don't live up to their image but it's made up for when you get to know someone like Dan. He truly is a hero.

We were very fortunate to have been able to attend the award ceremony held at The Henry Ford in Detroit and moderated by Charlie Rose. It was a wonderful evening that included a tribute video on Dan which you can watch here (scroll down toward the bottom the website page).

It's been an honor to know you Dan.  Congratulations!

Speaking of Dan, it reminded me of one of my favorite images of him.  It's the great Jesse Alexander shot taken at Le Mans in 1965. Coming out of Tertre Rouge in a Daytona Coupe into the setting sun, Dan shields his eyes with a gloved hand, every detail of his face and cockpit shown. A few years ago we offered a limited edition, numbered, large poster (24"x36") of this photo, autographed by Dan and myself. I asked the good folks around here if we had any left. After digging around in the inventory room they came out with a sleeve of the remaining 9 pieces, number 70 and 71 and 73 through 79.  They have now been placed on the website here.  Get yours now!
