Happy 2014! It seems to be no better time to be a Datsun/Nissan fan. We were of course in Tokyo last year to see the unveiling of the descendants to the 510, the IDx's and last week we were with Nissan at the Detroit Auto Show to see them unveil a new sporty sedan (rumored to be the next Maxima). It's a great looking car. We provide more details below.
First off we want to be sure you put on your calendars Peter Brock Day at the Petersen Museum in LA, Saturday February 1st. Details provided below include a cruise-in for you to show off your ride and then a two hour show of Peter Brock being interviewed by MotoMan TV. You can be in the audience and learn some surprising details about Peter Brock. Details below, including how to watch the show live if you can't attend.
2013 was an amazing year for us, but we also lost some very good friends. We'd like to take some time to remember the year, which included us winning the Motor Press Guild's most prestigious award of the year for our book on the Genesis of the '63 Corvette Sting Ray. Due to the success of the book we've been asked to carry more Corvette items, which we have just done and they are described below.
Enjoy the activities described below and we hope to see you at the Petersen on Saturday, Feb 1st!

First half of 2013 recap: |
It's hard to believe it was just one year ago last week that Peter Brock received the Phil Hill Award from the RRDC (Road Racers Drivers Club) in Daytona. It was, and still is, an amazing honor.
At the end of February last year BRE was recognized as one of the best new businesses of Henderson, NV. We've said it before and we'll say it again... if you want to stop complaining about the anti-business practices you deal with, come to NV!
In March at the Amelia Island Concours, Ed Welburn (head of GM Global Design) and myself put on a seminar on the Corvette Sting Ray. I presented how the original '63 Sting Ray came to be and Ed unveiled the new 2014 Sting Ray, talking about its origins. Unbeknownst to most, it was the kick-off for my book on the genesis of the '63 Split Window Sting Ray. At Amelia, the response to my presentation solidified the interest in, and outline for the book. Ed agreed to write the forward and in addition to my period sketches and photographs, he confirmed we would have access to the GM Design archives. For the next three months Gayle and I worked on the book around the clock, with Gayle sending her finished electronic files to the printers at the end of June for an August delivery of completed books, just in time for the Monterey vintage weekend.
Soon after returning from Amelia we lost my dear friend, and amazing artist George Bartell. We met young, while attending Art Center. Through the years I commissioned Bartell to do many art pieces while I was at Shelby American and then later when I started BRE. We had personal tragedies that paralleled each other. We called each other brother and I miss him. We continue to sell George's artwork here with proceeds helping his widow Ruth.

A New Project for 2014
Videos!
| First let us introduce you to Shelly, our new videographer. As you can see, Shelly fits right into BRE with her great sense of humor. We will be starting a new video series this year which Shelly will be instrumental in taping and posting. It'll be a series of conversations (stories) that we will post for your enjoyment. We will provide more information as we work out the details. In the meantime, we'd like to hear from you here what you'd like Peter Brock to "talk about". Any stories you haven't heard that you'd like to? Any stories you've heard but you'd like to hear them again? |
We know it's not Datsuns but you should know...
Our Corvette book Won the Prestigious Dean Batchelor Award!
|
While on tour with the book, the Motor Press Guild called to say our book on the Corvette Sting Ray was a finalist for their Book of the Year Award. At the awards dinner we were not only awarded with the Best Book of 2013, we won the whole thing with winning the highly regarded Dean Batchelor Award for best Automotive piece across all categories of film/video, books, articles and photography. We were shocked and as pleased as could be. Thanks Motor Press Guild!!
With the wonderful acceptance the Corvette Sting Ray book has received, we're being asked more and more to provide additional Corvette Sting Ray products. Through a relationship we have with the company that creates the Monterey Historics and Monterey Motorsports Reunion posters and memorabilia, we were able to procure some normally unavailable items such as the official Monterey event poster for last year when Corvette was the event marque and the 50th anniversary of the Sting ray. You can check them out here and also check out the amazing high quality Corvette lithographs by George Bartell here.

Speaking of Successful Books
Again, he's not talking Datsuns but it's our hero John

Other 2013 Highlights
Brock Interviewed by Jay Leno
| Most of the remainder of the year's focus was book signings which included a stop at Jay Leno's Garage where Jay and I talked on video about the book for his Jay Leno's Garage Book Club. We haven't received a date for its airing yet but once we do we will post that information immediately on our facebook page here. Request to be a friend of this site and you'll receive the notification automatically. We were also able to be part of a wonderful recognition John Morton received by the Fabulous Fifties club of the Lindley Bothwell Lifetime Achievement award. There's no question you're highly respected when people like Parnelli Jones and Dan Gurney turn out to speak to your accomplishments! |
2014 Begins as Special as 2013 Ended Another exciting Auto Show with Nissan | A highlight to the end of last year was our being the special guests of Nissan Japan at the Tokyo Auto Show where they unveiled their new IDx concept cars, obvious descendents to the Datsun 510s that BRE took to two national championships in '70-'72. It was an honor to be recognized at activities that spanned an entire week. And that's how this year has begun.
We've just returned from the Detroit Auto Show, where Nissan had the IDx's on display. They continue to look great. And be sure to pick up the next issue of Grassroots Motorsports (issue February 2014) because Peter has an article coming out with his analysis of the IDx's.
Nissan also unveiled a new Sports Sedan concept (seen above). It's a beauty and rumor has it's the next Maxima. Word has it that 95% of the concept car has already been transferred to an upcoming production car so we should see this car sooner than later. |
Progress on BRE's 240Z
Sure and Steady she's turning into a beauty
|
We've created an album on facebook here where we've been posting regular progress of the restoration of the '71 240Z we obtained last April. We couldn't be happier with this car. There have been no surprises. This one owner, un-restored car has been a pure delight to work on. The body has been completely stripped and is sporting a beautiful coat of primer. All the mechanicals are being cleaned. The engine and transmission rebuilds are done. She's going to come together quite quickly once the body is completed and ready for reassembly. We can't wait to show you the end result!

Update on Hot Wheels Redline BRE Datsun 510
Mattel's Red Line BRE Datsun 510 sold out before they arrived |
We totally understand people that don't want to be on facebook. It is however the fastest way we can get the word out on timely news. So last December we posted on facebook the availability of the new Hot Wheels Redline Series BRE Datsun 510 models.
Mattel offered them exclusively to their redline club members and they sold out in two hours. We offered our supply of 100 models on our website and put the notification out on our facebook page here. Our supply sold out in three days.
For those of you that got your orders in, we expect the models to arrive next week. We will take them to LA with us for John Morton to sign and they will ship to you the first week of February. We have seen the finished samples and these are indeed some pretty special hot wheels cars!

Peter Brock Day at the Petersen Feb 1st
It's going to be an interview like none other
|
We've been mentioning it throughout the entire newsletter. Now, here are the details! The main event Sat, Feb 1st at the Petersen is MotoMan TV interviewing Peter Brock from 11-1pm. It promises to be interesting as the interviewer has dug deep into Brock's past, promising to share some of his history you may not be aware of. Inside the museum there will be some cars from his past (some will no doubt surprise you). To be part of the audience (and this is really what you want to come to the event for) reserve your seats here while they last. Again, seating is limited so you have to put your name in. There's no charge.
In addition, preceding the interview, there will be a "cruise in" from 9am-11am where 150 choice parking spots will be reserved for you to bring your fun ride in and park. Brock will be walking around checking out all of your cool rides. Then at 11 the show begins.
We hope you can join us for this unique event! And if not, you can watch the MotoMan Show live here, again from 11-1pm PST (2-4pm EST). |
Holiday Wrap-Up
(pun intended)
|
We've been discontinuing a few items and here's where we are with what is left, what's next to go, etc...
There are only TWO Truescale signature series BRE 510 full team car sets left. Get them here before they're gone.
We're also discontinuing some shirts. When the current inventory of these classic 510 and 240Z wreath shirts ends, they'll once again become "history". In the 510 shirt we have only small, med, one 2XL and one 3XL left . In the Z shirt we have only small, med, L and one 3XL left. Don't wait to go here.

Even though within just the first few weeks of the new year we've covered some pretty significant territory, we're still working on the majority of our 2014 schedule. Some of what we know and a lot of what we don't is posted here.
We will continue to make updates as things firm up, which will include the unveiling of our new Aerovault MKII trailer.
Have a great 2014 and we hope you start it right by joining us at the Petersen Museum on Feb 1st!
