BRE/Peter Brock Designs. News Issue #031:

Book signings, car shows and much more!

October 30, 2013

We knew August would be a full month but were surprised how the calendar immediately filled not only into September but October and now November as well.

August was a series of massive events such as Monterey Week (as we're now calling a week of events that spans far beyond what used to be known as the Monterey Historics), followed by the Corvettes at Carlisle show which had a record attendance well into the thousands (both thousands of Corvettes and people). We were amazed by the successes we were involved in at these shows (described below) and how that continued into the smaller, yet high quality events of September, such as the LA SAAC (Shelby American Auto Club) annual show at the Santa Monica Pier and the prestigious Palos Verdes Rally and Concours. We share the highlights below.

Since our last newsletter my book on the origins of the '63 Corvette Sting Ray has been released so mixed in between the events above were book signings at the historic Auto Books store in Burbank, Pasteiner's AutoZone book store in Detroit and the Las Vegas Corvette Club.  We share pics and links to video below.  Speaking of the new book, we've been thrilled to receive your comments and to see the great reviews readers have been posting on Amazon.com.  Keep sharing your reviews here!

Sometime during all of this, our mascot Kit turned one year old.  Several of you have regularly asked for updates about her and even more of you have seen her in Monterey, LA and Phoenix.  The latest pics are below.

The shop has been looking especially good with three Superformance Brock Coupes currently in residence.  If you "like" our PeterBrockDesigns facebook page here you've seen regular updates/pics of what's been going on back there. We've also been very busy with our Aerovault trailers as you'll read below.

And we save the best for last: John Morton's book on his years at Shelby American has just been released.  It's Excellent!  Details below.

Enjoy,

Peter (& Gayle) Brock

Monterey Week Started with a Shower of Awards
3! Awards at The Quail Revival
The Quail Motorsports Revival Friday of Monterey Week recognized us with a special "Peter Brock Designs" exhibit.  Displayed were: the '59 Corvette Sting Ray Racer, a '63 split window Corvette, '64 Cobra Daytona Coupe CSX2299, two '65 Shelby GT350 Mustangs, the De Tomaso P70, the '67 Triumph TR-250K, the Championship #44 '69 BRE Datsun Roadster and the '72 #85 BRE Datsun 510 "Bobby Allison" car, my '05 Superformance Brock Coupe and my special thanks to Claude Nahum  who owns the '64 Lang Cooper which I designed while at Shelby American on a Cooper chassis.  The Lang was committed to an event in Europe so Claude had a 1:18 scale model custom made for display at the Quail.
We were over the top with the Exhibit and then the awards ceremony started. First up, the De Tomaso P70 won the Octane Magazine Award for best survivor car. What a thrill to see this recently discovered car drive up on the stage.  It still looks and sounds impressive.

'59 Sting Ray racer Then came the award for Best Design which was awarded to the '59 Corvette Sting Ray Racer. This is the car that I worked on with GM VP Bill Mitchell in 1957-58 and is featured on the cover of my book.  A special thanks to GM for providing this car in the midst of a very hectic schedule.

CSX2299 Last, but certainly not least, came the Best of Show Award.  In the midst of an amazing collection of cars, the Daytona Cobra Coupe won!  I was greeted on stage by the President of Rolex who said he was so pleased to finally be meeting the designer of a car that was winning Best of Show.  It was an amazing day.
BRE and Leno at Laguna Seca
The weekend's focus was on my just-then released book
It was a busy Monterey weekend, including have a booth at the Laguna Seca track.

One of our favorite highlights was when Leno stopped by. I'd say he draws a crowd wherever he goes but the crowd is actually around him at all times.  He insisted he stand in the book line like everyone else to have me autograph his copy of my book.  A class act.
Annual LA SAAC Show
A beautiful day at the Santa Monica Pier

Randall Richardson puts on a great show of Shelby cars every year.  We enjoyed the day along with Kit. She recently turned one year old and full grown now weighs 15 pounds and is 14" at the shoulder.  She happily greets everyone who visits the BRE shop. She is seen here at the LA SAAC show at the Pier (L to R) on the lap of Douglas Campbell, son of Doug Campbell, owner of Superformance Brock Coupe #088, on the lap of Qi (pronounced Chee) Lord and on the lap of her husband Jason Lord, who brought their '08 GT500 Super Snake ragtop to the show.

Book Signings

We've had fun seeing friends across the country

I've been very pleased with how well my book on the origins of the '63 Corvette Sting Ray has been received.  We had a great time in Detroit at Pasteiners book store on Woodward Ave (seen here).  I even caught up with a couple of old buddies from when I lived there in the '50s while working at GM.

The week before we visited Autobooks in Burbank, CA, the west coast equivalent. You can view a video of the visit here. Both stores have great informal get-togethers every Saturday morning.  Jay Leno is a regular and appeared at the signing that day.  I'm seen with him below.

Two of the reviews on Amazon I'm most proud of are by fellow GM Designers that were there when I was.  Here is an excerpt from one by Robert Cumberford: GM Designer in the 1950s and current editorialist for Automobile magazine:

"Given his distinguished design career, Peter Brock has every right to boast about his accomplishments and his key role in creation of the iconic 1963 Corvette. Instead, with admirable modesty he recounts exactly what happened in the long arduous process of creating the second-generation Corvette, the car that assured the continued existence of America's sports car. He neither embellishes nor understates his own role. As a participant in the struggle to keep Corvette alive even before Peter was hired in to GM Styling, I can state from personal experience that he tells the true story of those times when, with only 700-some cars sold for the entire 1955 model year, corporate bean-counters wanted to kill the Corvette, and only a few people worked quietly and effectively to keep it going. The writing is graceful, unobtrusive and highly informative... We can all be glad that the truth is presented now, by one of the few who lived it."

As the holidays approach we've been starting to get calls from some very nice people ordering books for their spouses.  Be sure to let your other half know what you'd like.  They, or you, can order anytime from our website here or from Amazon here.  Available is the book on its own or the book encased in a collector edition fabric slip case with foil embossing.  And it 's all MADE IN AMERICA. From the writing to the printing to the binding.  Support the USA!

Palos Verdes Concours

A Surprising Rally Result

We knew we were going to have a wonderful weekend with the people of the Palos Verdes Concours and Rally, and we did.  A great display of cars I had designed, or been involved with, welcomed visitors and the cars in the show were quite spectacular.

The day before the show, an annual Rally is held. Approximately 60 cars with their drivers and navigators threaded their way through the streets of Palos Verdes for a couple of hours picking up clues and filling in answers on their rally sheets.  The goal was to cross the finish line in the time deemed the "perfect run" by the organizers (a time not shared with participants).  Imagine our surprise when it was announced at the Grand Marshal's Reception that Gayle and I had won the rally in a record time of 33 seconds off perfection. We proudly accepted the "dented hubcap" trophy seen here.  What a great weekend!

John Morton's "Inside Shelby American"
Championship driver, engaging speaker and NOW... entertaining author

Morton with book We couldn't be more proud of John's latest accomplishment, a book on his years at Shelby American.

Morton's successes with the BRE (Brock Racing Enterprises) team from '69-'72 were well chronicled in one of the best motorsports books ever written, Sylvia Wilkinson's "Stainless Steel Carrot", available here and on Amazon. John now takes to pen and paper himself and shares, in entertaining detail, what led to his championship years, specifically, but not exclusively, his years at Shelby American.

John starts at the beginning and leads us from his Midwestern childhood to how he came across the Carroll Shelby School of High Performance Racing at Riverside Raceway in California to fulfilling his dream of driving for team Shelby. Arriving at the school expecting to be taught to drive by Le Mans winning driver Carroll Shelby, Morton was understandably disappointed to find out I would be his instructor. As Morton says today with his traditional dry wit, "I guess I can say that turned out okay".

John asked if we would carry his book.  We said yes! and asked if he would autograph it.  He said yes and asked if I would autograph it also, saying it's only right as I'm mentioned throughout.  Go here to get this wonderful new book, autographed by both myself and my friend, author John Morton.

Bondurant's 80th Birthday Celebration
A lovely October weekend in Phoenix
At a delightful dinner with the Bondurants and many friends and fans (L-R Dixie Grant, John Morton, Allan Grant, Pat Bondurant, Bob, Gayle and myself), Bob shared that his 80th birthday was actually in April but that wife Pat hasn't been able to resist taking advantage of every event this year to celebrate his 80th again. It was a charming insight into a very happy relationship. It was a fun weekend for all, filled with races, a car show and us selling and signing books at the Bondurant home track.
Drivers Talk Radio Interview
I talk about my new book and bit of everything on the show
Drivers Talk #696 with Peter Brock part 1
Drivers Talk #696 with Peter Brock part 1

Drivers Talk #697 with Peter Brock part 2
Drivers Talk #697 with Peter Brock part 2

My previous interview with Rick Titus and the folks at Drivers Talk Radio was their most popular segment to-date so we thought we'd do it again!  This time we focus on my experiences at GM Styling and the Corvette.  You can watch both episodes of the show by clicking on the images above. Rick also gives a 10 minute news update at the beginning of each show before I come on. I encourage you to listen to this also.  It's very informative and Rick is very entertaining.  Enjoy!
Our Aerovault Trailers
Continuing demand drives dramatic changes

Any of you that have followed our Aerovault trailers closely know we have struggled with having enough built to satisfy demand. With the popularity of the trailers continuing, and growing, we've decided to take the entire production of the trailers in-house.

We've obtained a second facility (seen here) that will be dedicated to building the trailers, added a foreman and expert welder (Jerry Segal) with more additions to come. We look forward to sharing the details of our newly designed trailers with you over the coming months.

We shouldn't stop meeting like this
Leno appears again, this time interviewing me at Art Center
Add a description You know you're in all the right places when you're seeing Jay almost every week.  At this last weekend's Art Center Classic (a great car show you should put on your calendar), Jay was his typical hilarious self as he interviewed myself about the '63 Corvette Sting Ray and Tom Peters, GM Designer on the 2014 Corvette Sting Ray.
In Closing

Our frenzied schedule continues through November and December.  Tentatively scheduled is a west coast Corvette Club book signing tour and an interview with Jay Leno for his Book Club. A special thanks to Alison here in the office who not only takes care of you and your orders, she also takes care of Kit when we can't take her with us.  Kit is seen here with Sherry and Dave MacDonald's (Shelby driver) granddaughter Kirra MacDonald (lucky dog!).

Another upcoming highlight will be attending the Fabulous Fifties annual dinner where John Morton will receive the Lindley Bothwell Lifetime Achievement Award. Congratulations go to John again!  We will also be traveling to Japan. We will share details of the trip as they happen via our facebook pages.

Speaking of facebook, it is the most current way to keep updated on what we're doing.  Many, if not all, of the items above actually appeared on our facebook pages as they happened.  Please "like" the BRE Datsun page here and the Peter Brock Designs page here. We know some of you don't want to get onto facebook and that's fine.  We'll continue to provide updates via our newsletters, albeit somewhat later.
