August 05, 2013

Greetings!

We're packing for Monterey and Carlisle!!  We get lots of questions about our schedule at events such as these so we've included detail upon detail below.  We also give an update on the arrival of my new book: "Corvette Sting Ray: Genesis of an American Icon".  I've just received a completed book (seen above) and I couldn't be happier with it. Lastly, in George Bartell's art archives we found the perfect piece to accompany the new book.  All info is below.  We hope to see you either in Monterey or Carlisle in the next few weeks.

Enjoy,

Peter (& Gayle) Brock

1963 Bartell Pen and Ink Art
63 prints made of Sting Ray's TV debut

Bartell 63 Sting Ray Debut It seems like every time we go through George Bartell's fine art we find something we hadn't taken note of before. Such is the case with this Bartell pen and ink piece on the TV debut of the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray.  In focusing on Cobra items we hadn't taken much note of it until we started writing the book on this very car.

Bartell created this pen and ink art in 1963 to capture the TV debut of the new Corvette Sting Ray. It's a real time capsule showing the old style TV studio setting, cameras, lighting and all those great suits and hair styles (even a cool cat smoking a pipe)!

  • A limited, 63 prints have been made (and that's all that will be made).
  • The prints are numbered 1 through 63 (e.g. 01/63 through 63/63).
  • These prints are signed by myself as I worked with Bill Mitchell on the design of the car in 1957
  • The original artwork is signed by George Bartell who passed away in April of this year. His signature is of course contained in this reproduction.
  • To compliment this piece, it comes framed with a glass cover and slim black plastic frame that already accommodates a hanging fixture.
As a member of our newsletter group you're getting first shot at these.  At the end of this week whatever is left will be packed and taken to Monterey where we expect to sell out. Get this beautiful, detailed one-of-a-kind piece here while they last.
Monterey and Carlisle Focus
Taking non-Corvette product orders now for at-event delivery
With the new book and Corvette being the marque at Monterey and Carlisle the following weekend, that's what we'll be focused on at both events.  We won't have our normal stock of Cobra and Datsun posters, shirts, mugs, key rings, decals, etc.

IF, however, there is anything you'd like to pick up from us there, put in your order with us this week and we'll bring it.  You can order online here but if you contact us via phone (702)558-3374 or e-mail here we can eliminate any shipping charges the website would charge.  We will get your item on the truck and will have it reserved for you at our booth at Monterey or at Carlisle.  One item we'll be sure to take to Monterey for ourselves is our Cobra fleece pullovers. These are perfect for Monterey's cold damp mornings and chilly evenings.
Monterey Motorsports Week
(our) Detailed Event Schedule 8/13-18
  • TR-250k Tue: The BRE crew (including mascot Kit!) hits Monterey with two Aerovault trailers in tow.
  • Wed: Priorities!  First we're going to have lunch at my favorite restaurant in Monterey.
    • Then we head to the track where I'll be interviewed on video by Vintage Motorsports magazine
    • We'll set up our booth in vendor row (that's the row of white tents that start at the pedestrian bridge right after Turn 3). Rumor has it that Alison might be set up to sell books before the event officially starts Friday (sounds like a great opportunity to avoid lines).
  • Thu:
    • 1-2:30pm I'll be on the Hagerty panel, "What's Under the Hood" at the Monterey Marriott.  The panel of "experts" will share what cars they'll each be watching during the week's auctions and why.  We'll have books available there and the seminar will be followed with a book signing session. These free seminars are a great service that Hagerty puts on. They just asked that you register here  if you plan to attend as seats are limited and they're available on a first-reserve basis.
    • Intermittently we'll be out of the track getting setup and I bet you can get a book before the crowds gather on Friday.
    • Thu night some of our team will join Classic Motorsports magazine for a frolicking good time at their Kick-Off Party at the Baja Cantina here. It's kind of like a Cars N Coffee event on steroids. We'd like to take this opportunity to encourage you to meet the folks at Classic (they also run Grassroots Motorsports magazine). We see the internals of a lot of magazines and these guys are on top of it all. Their latest issue contains nearly an entire page of info on my new book. The issue has been out two weeks already and no one else has it together yet to share this info with their readers. You get their magazine and you'll know what's happening first!
    • While the BRE team is Baja'ing it, Gayle and I will join some Norcal Shelby Club folks at a small bbq.  I know Gayle's going to be wearing her Cobra pullover for sure!
  • Fri:
    • It's the first official track day at the Laguna Seca track. Our trackside booth will be fully staffed.
    • Gayle and I, however, will be at The Quail event (no link provided as it's sold out but the photo above is theTriumph TR-250K I designed) where the "Designs of Peter Brock" are being featured.  I'm looking forward to seeing so many of my cars gathered in one location.  From the De Tomaso P70, '59 Corvette Sting Ray Racer (thanks GM for bringing it out of your collection for this event!), Shelby GT350, my own personal Coupe, a BRE Datsun 510, 240Z and roadster (thank you Adam Carolla) and many more cars.
    • That night is the Rolex dinner featuring Ed Welburn, GM's VP of Global Design and the author of the Foreword for my new book.  And Tommy Milner, current ALMS Corvette works driver.  Gayle and I have been watching Tommy's career from the very beginning when he drove Formula Mazdas in the mid '00s.  It's been great to see him do so well, and to hear him talk about what he's learned along the way.
  • Sat:  After an early morning meeting at our hotel I'll be dedicated to the track the rest of the day.  There will be a few book signing sessions:
    • 10am-11am Saturday at the track is the week's largest event.  We'll get right to it at 10am with a book signing at our booth in vendor row.
    • 11:30-noon My largest book signing will be right before "the picnic" where Tommy Milner and Jackie Stewart will speak. This is on a stage in the grassy area where the large vendor displays are (like GM).  Coming over to get your book signed will be a great way to also get a seat for this interesting discussion.
    • 12:30-1pm I'm confident I won't get everyone's books signed in 30 minutes at the picnic area so after I'm done there I'll continue signing for the rest of the lunch break at our booth.
    • 3-4pm After a lunch break myself I'll be back at it for one more afternoon session
  • Sun:  With the Pebble Beach Concours underway on Sunday the track will be a little less crowded.
    • We will have one official book signing at our booth on Sunday during the track's official lunch break from 11:50-1pm.  If you need anything other than during that time feel free to let one of our staff know as I'll be just a radio call away.

The Laguna Seca event/track schedule can be found here.

Book Update

Books will be here Thursday!

Corvette book slip case (special edition slip case shown here).  I was given a handful of finished books and a slip case today.  They look great! The rest of the books will arrive this Thursday with the exception of the pallet which is shipping directly to Carlisle.

The pre-order special we've been running (books priced at $63) will end Wednesday night at which time the books will go to their normal price of $69.95 and the handsome special edition slip case (shown here in it's dark blue fabric with silver foiled emblems is as handsome as it gets) will increase from $36.95 to $40.

Any orders received from now and through the weekend will ship before we leave for Monterey Tue August 13th.  Orders received after that will ship when the crew returns to the office on Tue August 20th (we won't be in at all that week as we'll be heading east to Carlisle).

We encourage you to order here quickly, not just for the special price but looking at the ratio of slip cases being ordered we expect to be out by the end of the Carlisle weekend.

Corvettes at Carlisle!
Carlisle Schedule 8/22-24

1963 Corvette What a show.  Thousands and thousands of Corvettes in one location.  We can't wait.

  • Thu the 22nd we arrive into town late (the day before we will be celebrating Gayle's mother's 80th birthday in Nebraska.  Happy Birthday Meta!
  • Fri: Gates open at 7am and we'll be close by:
    • All day:  We will have an area in the Hospitality Tent where people can get the new book.  We would recommend you not wait to get yours as the pallet that's on its way to Carlisle will only have enough books for about 4% of the expected attendees.
    • 10am Lance Miller, owner of the event has a special display he'll be showing me (it has something to do with '63 Corvette Sting Rays!)
    • 12:30 -  we'll have an official autograph session at our area in the Hospitality Tent.
    • In the afternoon I'll be making a special point to try to get around as many areas of the event as possible.
    • 6pm - we'll be joining the National Corvette Owners at their banquet.  I'm really going to enjoy talking about my experiences at GM Styling with the Sting Ray.
  • Sat:  Gates open at 7am and we'll be there!
    • 10am I'll be interviewed on the National radio program Cruise Control which broadcasts live from this amazing event.
    • 10:30am will be our official autograph session in our area in the Hospitality Tent. I sure hope we still have some books left for people by then.
    • Noon-1:30 we'll be participating in the VIP Luncheon in the Hospitality Tent.
    • Lance will then be taking me around to see an amazing display of 63 1963 Corvette Sting Rays.  Can you imagine?

It's a great weekend and if you haven't ever gone we encourage you to check it out here.

Tired yet?  It's going to be a great August.  We hope to see you somewhere in the next few weeks!
