Brock Receives Prestigious Phil Hill Award
January 23, 2013
Phil Hill award Main

Greetings!

Thanks for all the holiday cards and letters!  Your stories and photos made the season very bright indeed.  It was wonderful that so many of you took the time to share such treasures with us.  We can't respond to everything we receive but be assured we enjoyed every single piece!

And we always enjoy and appreciate you allowing us to be part of your holidays.  The orders we receive, with the stories gift givers (and recipients) share, are very special to us.  Below we give an update on what items were hot this season.

We hope your holidays were also enjoyable and that your 2013 has started out well.  In moving to NV, we've found the 4 hour drive to Scottsdale every January for auction week has been quite fun.  We were involved in quite a few activities there last week, which we share more info on below.

The holidays always seem to bring back a little nostalgia and for us that means cracking open the archives. We've selected a few more BRE early '70s images to share in our photography section.  This also includes a rare image of the highly coveted BRE Dyno... a rarity for a race team to have back in those days.  It was so special that the BRE non-race day team shirts proclaimed "Pete Brock Dyno".  See a fun special we're offering below.

Last but not least, tonight we were also graced with the RRDC (Road Racing Drivers' Club) recognizing Brock for his contributions to road racing with their prestigious Phil Hill Award.  Read on to learn why this award has special significance for Brock and what we're doing to commemorate it and contribute to the future of automotive design.

Enjoy!

Peter Brock Recognized with Phil Hill Award
Prestigious RRDC makes Daytona week extra special
Phil Hill Award with BrockLet's start with some very exciting news... every year during their annual Daytona gathering, the RRDC (Road Racing Driver's Club) presents the Phil Hill Award to the person the RRDC feels has rendered outstanding service to road racing.  This year's award winner, Peter Brock (seen above receiving the award from Bobby Rahal), joins an illustrious group of past recipients such as Juan Manuel Fangio II, Danny Sullivan, Brian Redman, Bob Bondurant and Roger Penske.

The award holds special significance to Brock. At an impressionable 14 years of age at the Pebble Beach Road Race, Brock watched as Phil took the checker in his black Jaguar XK120.  To put an exclamation point on the accomplishment, Phil would again win the race the following year in his Alfa.  Phil was forever Brock's image of the successful racer.

Phil Hill TrophyYears later when Brock was attending Art Center College of Design, he worked at a music store in Santa Monica that Phil frequented. They got to know each other, talking not only about racing but sharing their love of music, especially Phil's interest in the classical genre.  Phil was a true gentleman and a man Brock has admired for over 60 years.

Peter Brock Lifetime Achievement Artwork

Limited, numbered & autographed prints to be made available

Art Center Peter Brock art for newsletter To recognize this prestigious honor, a limited number of prints will be made available of the Peter Brock Lifetime Achievement Award artwork made for the Art Center College of Design in 2011, by famed illustrator Dennis Brown. Only 100 prints will be offered, numbered and signed by Peter Brock. A substantial share of the proceeds will go back to Art Center to further the success of their transportation department.  Print details are being worked out now.  A subsequent communication will be sent when they are available to order.

Orders were brisk during the holidays

What did you get?

510 3 car set for newsletter Products most in demand were (in order and how many are left):

  • The Stainless Steel Carrot takes first prize for being the most popular gift ordered this holiday season!  We have approx 12 copies left that are autographed by the author (Sylvia), Championship driver John Morton, Team owner/manager Peter Brock, BRE's first employee Joey Cavaglieri (now a famous restorer of historically significant Porsche 550 Spyders) and BRE's master fabricator George Boskoff.
  • Second place goes to the Truescale die-cast BRE 510 team cars model (seen above).  We have less than a dozen of the BRE 3 car team set left (signed by Peter Brock) and less than 5 of the single #46 car (signed by both Brock and John Morton).
  • 510 Collector mug for newsletterThird place was a surprise.  So popular were the BRE 510 collector coffee mugs that we only have two left. Two! They won't be reproduced so if you were thinking of getting one, go here really quickly. We still have a good supply of BRE 240Z collector mugs left but this holiday season showed us how quickly an item can disappear when you least expect it.
  • Last but not least were a wide variety of posters.

Trans-Am Legends panel at Scottsdale

Schwarz, Follmer, Brock and Morton put on a good show

Trans-Am panel Scottsdale for newsletter
The week of the Scottsdale auctions every January has evolved to be much more than just cars being bought and sold.  It's become a great gathering place for friends and acquaintances and even seminars/talks are now being held during the week.

One such event last week was the Trans-Am Legends seminar, held by Hagerty Insurance at the Penske Museum.  Panelists were John Morton (representing 2.5 drivers), Peter Brock (representing 2.5 team managers), George Follmer (Trans-Am Over 2.5 drivers) and Jerry Schwarz (Trans-Am Over 2.5 crew chiefs).  Moderator Jonathan Stein queried the panel on the personalities and action of the factory backed teams and what made the racing some of the most exciting in motorsports history.

We hope you were able to watch the banter via the live streaming link we provided on the bre.datsun facebook page.  If not, we'll let you know when Hagerty posts the video.

Speaking of the Carrot

Stainless Steel Carrot Rises to the Top

Stainless Steel Carrot

Sylvia Wilkinson and the second edition of her book on BRE's Trans-Am years, The Stainless Steel Carrot Revisited, were recognized by the Motorsports Guild in December.  Out of ALL the motorsports books published last year, the Motorsports Guild voted it one of the top three.  We'd say "amazing!" but if you've read the new book you know it's nothing less than an obvious choice.  Morton and Wilkinson attended the awards ceremony in their finest duds to receive this well deserved recognition (we've received no pic of them but word is they looked great).  Congratulations Sylvia!
Newly Published BRE Archive Images
A search through the archives resulted in some special finds

BRE archive image Portland 1972 for newsletter We're often asked for more color photos of the BRE years and those are rare due to the prevalence of black & white film at that time.  We however have found some gems, including all BRE 510 team cars lined up in the BRE paddock at Portland and an image of Morton working in the BRE shop as was rare for a driver even back then, but not for Morton who was as good of a fabricator as he was a driver.

Engine Dyno image for newsletter We are so thrilled with finding the image of the BRE Dyno that we're going to run a  special here through the end of this month.

Purchase the Dyno archive photo reprint and receive a BRE Dyno team shirt Free.  Or buy the BRE Dyno team shirt and receive the BRE Dyno archive photo reprint for free.  It's basically a two for one special.  Enjoy this fun time in history!

Another Exciting Seminar Just Around the Corner!

Sting Ray for newsletter It's been a great start to the year.  With our change in schedule (no flying to a race every other week), we're planning more great activities to follow, such as celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Corvette Stingray at the Amelia Island seminar March 8th.

Brock will talk about the sketch he drew at GM Styling in 1957 which would become the Sting Ray Racer (seen here) and evolve into the production Stingray in 1964.  Brock will be joined by current GM VP of Design Ed Welburn to talk about the evolution of the Corvette (which will include some of the other sketches Brock drew at that time of alternative sport car designs).

It's going to be another great seminar!  We hope to see you there.

Best wishes for a wonderful 2013!
