Support Westown's New Neighborhood Street Banners!
A rendering of the new street banner at Zeidler Union Square

The Westown Association is asking for help as we undergo a process to rebrand the neighborhood. As you may know, in late 2012, the Westown Association BID #5 decided to create a new identity for the organization. This was a collaborative effort that included the input of the organization's neighborhood stakeholders, board of directors and marketing committee. The group successfully developed a fresh, new look to represent Westown's downtown neighborhood.

In 2013, one of the organization's key objectives is to use this new image as a means of identifying and creating a sense of place in the neighborhood's significant, yet very diverse areas through the strategic placement of fifty street banners. Those banners will be positioned in areas that include West Wisconsin Avenue, The Brewery and the former Park East Freeway area as well as in locations adjacent to major neighborhood institutions and attractions such as the Milwaukee County Courthouse, BMO Harris Bradley Center, Milwaukee Public Library and Wisconsin Center. Our goal is to have the banners in place by early fall of 2013.

Westown Farmers' Market partners with Marquette's Campus Kitchen!

Campus Kitchen volunteers from Marquette collecting produce from the market vendors!

Every Wednesday, June thru October, a Marquette University van visits Zeidler Union Square to attend the Westown Farmers' Market. Over the past four years, the Westown Farmers' Market has partnered with Marquette's Campus Kitchen to help contribute to the aid of one of Milwaukee's biggest problems: hunger. Each week at the Westown Farmers' Market, a group of Marquette students  collect donated food from the market's vendors. This food is then brought back to the kitchen, located at O'Donnell Hall on Marquette's campus, where Marquette students work with  faculty to prepare meals to be delivered to low-income seniors, children and families in need.

Since the organization's beginning in 2003, Campus Kitchen has  served 177,241 meals. For four years now, they have partnered with the Westown Farmers' Market to collect around 12,154 pounds of locally grown produce. This number will continue to grow according to Campus Kitchen Coordinator, Amanda Parrell Kaczmarek, who says, "August and September tend to be our biggest time." The produce donated aids Campus Kitchen in providing around 500 meals a week. Westown is proud to support this community organization. Look for the Marquette van each week at our market!

MPD's Homeless Outreach Team Awarded

Several years ago, District One recognized a need for a different approach to provide long-term solutions to the homeless population in downtown Milwaukee.  MPD established partnerships with numerous community service organizations and the Homeless Outreach Team (H.O.T.) was created.

Since then, H.O.T. has aided many homeless people  by helping them in relocating with family or permanent housing, joining the military, accessing mental health assistance or securing permanent employment.

The H.O.T. unit continues to intervene with individuals seeking to improve their situation, as well as, addressing the aggressive panhandling in order to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for all patrons in downtown Milwaukee.

Since its beginning, the Homeless Outreach Team has been awarded:

2011 - Hope Award presented by Community Advocates

2012 -  Milwaukee Continuum of Care

2013 - Exchange Club 64th Annual Crime Prevention Awards
