 | Trainer Spotlight: Meet Shannon Stowe, ACE Youth Training Specialist
| Shannon has been dancing most of her life, and that has led her to explore her passions in both the theatrical and fitness worlds. She has been teaching group fitness for over 10 years and is an ACE certified personal trainer.
Q: What is your favorite skills game you play with your clients? A: That would depend on the likes and needs of the clients. With my theatrical background, I can be creative and try to make things very specific. One of my favorite fitness activities to set up is the obstacle course. It works for children and older teens. The variety of tools and exercises to use is endless, can be catered to any level, and creates an experience with a beginning, middle, and end. Using music and different timing adds to the fun of it.
Q: What advice do you have for parents who are considering a personal trainer for their child? A: I think the best thing a parent can do is talk with potential trainers and get the best match first of all. It is important for parents and the trainer to be able to communicate honestly.

 | Parents & Children Together: Making Exercise a Shared Activity
By Dana Rosenbloom, M.S. Ed.
|
Recently, I had the pleasure of sharing a post from one of the Energetic Juniors coaches on my website
http://danaskids.com/site/2015/01/23/shouldnt-children-exercise/
The article focused on ways to get children moving. Certainly, opening the back door to let the children play in the yard is not an option for the most part in New York City where I reside, but truly, my clients throughout the country talk about children who seem "addicted" to electronics and don't want to go out and play. I'll save my thoughts about technology for another post, but I think it is worth discussing the idea of role models.
In education, we talk about the parent as the child's first and best teacher. That's not simply about academics, it holds true for managing emotions, resilience and activity level. Parenting isn't easy, and given that we're in the middle of the winter, getting outside to model activity may not be easy either. That said, what is the message you are giving your child about how you value physical activity? Do you take the stairs to the 2rd floor of a building or the elevator? Do you spend your days on the weekends on your technology, as they'd like to, or do you model time management and creative ways to stay active (even if it's indoors...and only some of the time)?
Here are a few easy ways for parents of young children to incorporate activity into each day (or even every other day):
- Make an obstacle course in the house using pillows and cushions from the couch, painter's tape, and any other items you have around.
- Play a puzzle. Put the pieces at the bottom of the stairs and either place the board at the top of the stairs, or construct the puzzle there.

 | Continued Progress: Energetic Juniors Kids By Mario Guerrero, Energetic Juniors Certified Trainer
| ...something remarkable the boys did today. Sam and I have been working on jumping rope for quite a while now and we recently have been trying to beat his daily record on every session. Sam did 107 jumps today. On the other hand, Jason overheard Sam's accomplishment and decided to do something of similar magnitude. Jason performed 111 pushups in the span of today's sessions.
I thought you would appreciate this as much as I did. I told both of them that I was surprised and proud of them.
This is why I love to do what I do.
Sincerely Mario Guerrero
