Greetings!

Energetic Juniors is here to help your children stay active through the winter.  In this month's newsletter, we have a wide selection of ways to keep your children (and you) fit during the wintry months.

As a heads up, on March 12th, we will be part of a team presenting a free WORKSHOP: Interdisciplinary Approach to Raising your Unique Child.  We are excited to join forces to offer this valuable workshop designed for parents, caregivers, and professionals working in pediatrics.

You will gain tools to integrate a healthy diet, play, and exercise using an interdisciplinary team approach to balance a child's routine.  Parents, caregivers and professionals will benefit from this workshop's contributions and open dialogue with professionals from various perspectives, including nutrition, fitness specialism, ABA, and OT.  For details and to sign up, visit our blog.  Look for more to come.

Juggling for Fitness
By Joe Bigelow, IYCA Certified Youth Fitness Specialist
Certain aspects of fitness are often overlooked.  One of these crucial aspects is coordination.

Object manipulation activities like juggling improve coordination, making the nervous system more efficient in all movement tasks.  Learning a coordination activity like this can help improve skills in sports like baseball, soccer, or anything that involves catching or throwing a moving object or involves a sense of rhythm.

Juggling is an activity that people of all ages can learn.  You may even find it fun to challenge yourself to learn juggling alongside your child.  Click the video link below to learn more about juggling.

Nutrition Tips for Boosting Immunity
By Brown & Medina Nutrition
No one likes to be sick, but with winter upon us we are entering prime time for colds, the flu, and other respiratory illnesses. Fueling your body with nourishing and healthy foods has long been understood to help prevent disease and increase overall health.

Here are some tips to help you keep your immune system strong this winter:
  • Stay hydrated!  The dry winter air and our heated homes can make dehydration possible in the Winter . Getting adequate water is crucial because it keeps our body's tissues moist, removes toxins and wastes from the body, and transports nutrients and oxygen to cells.
  • Eat foods high in Vitamin A: A deficiency in Vitamin A is associated with impaired immunity and risk for infectious disease. Foods high in Vitamin A include: Sweet potatoes, spinach, carrots, red peppers and mangoes.

Stuck Indoors?  Let the Games Begin!
By Bonita Porte
On these long days that you feel stuck in the house with your children, why not turn this forced hibernation into family fun activity time. Enjoy healthy, energetic playtime with lots of laughing, smiles and giggles...and these sounds will not only be coming from your children!

Here are some ideas to get you started. Your children don't even have to know that the adventure you are about to go on with them is not only lots of fun, but it is healthy active play.
  • Clap Ball
    • The child tosses a beach ball up in the air and claps once before it is caught. See if they can do this as many as 20 times. Once they get really good at this and to continue to improve eye/hand coordination, try it with two or even three claps before the ball is caught.

For the rest of the games, check out our blog
