Holiday Health Tips
Andrea Robbins, M.S., HHC
A resource for families who try to create and maintain healthy, balanced homes and lives.
Family Wellness Counselor Andrea Robbins has made a list of the most important tips for maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle during the holiday season.  Here are 2 of them:

Drink at least 8 cups of water a day.  Staying hydrated can keep sugar cravings at bay and curb hunger

Keep sugar consumption in check.  Over consumption of sugar can lead to sweet cravings and lower your immune system.

Looking at Balance
(Part 2: Approaching Balance)
By Roxanne Chess MS, OTR/L
     Director of Occupational Therapy
The McCarton Center for Developmental Pediatrics
What does it take to balance?
In order to balance, people typically need:
  1. Visual input
  2. Vestibular input

The previous entry discussed visual input.  What then is vestibular input (in a nutshell)?

Vestibular input comes from the vestibular system, which resides in the inner ear.  This system detects rotational and linear accelerations, providing the brain with its sense of balance.

           Balance Activity

Couch Cushion Crazy!

  • Remove couch cushions and use the inner surface of the couch and the actual cushions as unstable surfaces for jumping, walking, and balancing. Encourage your children to climb over the cushions across the area to collect toys. Try standing on 1 foot on cushions versus the floor. Show your children how to reach from side to side for puzzle pieces or toys while standing on cushions.

For more balance activities and info about vestibular input, follow the link below to the Energetic Juniors blog:

More Core Strengthening Games
By Katrina Phillip, Certified Energetic Juniors Trainer
As promised from the October newsletter, here are more core strengthening games for your kids.  A developed and sensitive core allows your child to respond more effectively to the body's vestibular input, allowing for improved balance. Make sure your kids are having FUN while playing these games!

Foot To Foot
Partner bicycle crunches.  Lie down, and have your feet touching.  Bicycle crunch away!

Book on Head Obstacle Course
The classic, balancing a book on your head, but, make it more fun by creating an obstacle course around the room/apartment. Start easy, then as you perfect the course, make it more and more challenging.

For the rest of the games, check out our blog.
