I recently received this email from one of our Energetic Juniors Moms. The following words speak for themselves:
"Dear Robert and Bonita,
Ben's dreams have come true. He has been wanting this since 3rd grade. Ben is the starting center for the 7/8th football team at his school. He was in every offensive play. And the only 7th grader to play the whole game. He is a happy, happy boy. The coaches think he is a fantastic team mate. The coach made a point to tell me he is the first boy on the field and last boy off and always asking how he can improve. And he has the respect of his teammates too! Robert, thank you for your care and guidance of Ben. Your thoughtful and meaningful sessions helped Ben reach his goals and for that I am grateful."
~Ben's Mom
Ben's increases in fitness, skill, self-confidence, and--most importantly--happiness, are precisely what Energetic Juniors strives to foster in every child. Through the efforts of our superb trainers, we are able to offer truly life-changing experiences.

Looking at Balance (Part 1: Functional Vision)
By Roxanne Chess MS, OTR/L
Director of Occupational Therapy The McCarton Center for Developmental Pediatrics
|
What is functional vision? Functional vision is the way in which an individual uses whatever vision he or she has. The term may refer to skills such as: - scanning a worksheet
- focusing on a target when throwing
- maintaining eye contact while swinging
When your child is working on balance with their Energetic Juniors trainer how is functional vision incorporated? Maybe your child is learning to spot for static balance. Maybe your child's trainer is teaching them to track a moving object while keeping their head still. Maybe your child is learning to keep their eyes fixated on a target while moving their body around the room. While each child's needs are unique, there are basic principles of functional vision that apply to everyone. To learn about these principles and how functional vision plays a part in your child's balance, coordination, and general fitness, follow the link below to the Energetic Juniors blog:

Core Strengthening Games By Katrina Phillip, Certified Energetic Juniors Trainer
|
Core strength is an essential component of balance. When your child has a developed and sensitive core, the neuromuscular messages sent to different parts of the body from the sensory processes (e.g. functional vision) can be translated effectively into efficient movement. The following is one of many exercises I use to develop this strength in children, and to make sure they are having FUN while doing it!
Word Association Sit-Ups- Trainer or parent holds the child's feet down- child is in a sit-up position (feet firmly planted on the ground, knees up, back flat on the floor).
- Trainer says a word, and then the child sits up and says a word that first comes to his mind after hearing the trainer's word.
- You keep going until a word is repeated. If a word is repeated all do a push-up.
This is just one of many ways to turn exercise into play and to develop a child's core strength. Stay tuned for more exercises next month!

Pumpkin: The Secret Ingredient By Stephanie Middleberg, MS, RD, CDN
|
I'm pretty obsessed with pumpkin (real pumpkin, not pumpkin spice flavoring), which isn't exactly rare this time of year. But this fall icon is a lot more than a latte flavor and Halloween decor-it's delicious and nutritious, and it can be added to almost anything. Click the link below for some of my favorite pumpkin recipes from around the web and for info on the health benefits of pumpkins.
