Energetics Newsletter
September 2014

Greetings!

Take a deep breath, maybe take several deep breaths, and off you go to what I know is a very busy time for you and your family: back-to-school.

As you get settled in to old and new routines, we will continue our mission to support families to be healthier and more active for this school year.  As the first in-home personal training company for children in NYC, Energetic Juniors has worked continuously for 18 years to make you and your families healthier.  Our passionate, patient, and creative trainers will customize programs for any children/teens with a wide spectrum of needs, including special needs.

But what can you do right now to make your family healthier?  In this newsletter, we have provided some tips that should be of help to get you motivated.

And don't forget, if you haven't signed your child up for our fall personal program, contact me today.  Our programs are

the perfect solution to help keep your child fit and energized as they go through a rigorous school year.

Welcome back.

Best,

Bonita

Are Fit Kids Smarter?
(from Health Matters with Dr. Sanjay Gupta)

We always knew exercise had fantastic benefits, but how does it affect your child when she/he is not on the playground, on the baseball field, or in the park?  Is all that exercise making any difference on their work in school?  The latest research indicates that "there is a clear connection between physical fitness and academic performance." Follow this link to read the full article.

Somehow this doesn't surprise us at Energetic Juniors.  We always knew exercise had multifarious benefits.  And with all the physical activity your kids get through Energetic Juniors, we see on a daily basis that they are smarter than ever.

7-Minute Bedtime Yoga Routine for Adults and Children
By Kelly Scanlon, E-RYT
Energetic Juniors Trainer, Yoga Teacher, &
  Weight loss Coach

1.Child's Pose/Lizard on a rock:

Alternate who is the lizard and who is the rock.  The rock begins on hands and knees and then sits back onto their heels, placing their forehead on the ground and stretching through their arms (child's pose).  The lizard sits back-to-back to the rock with their legs

stretched out in front of them and gently leans back onto the rock.  Hold for 5 breaths. (Click here to see what this looks like.)

2. Seated Twist/pretzel pose:

Twists are great for fall as they help to promote digestion and purify the body.  To begin, sit on a blanket with your legs in front of you.  Bend your right knee and cross your right leg over your left with your right foot on the floor.  Flex your left toes and place your right hand on the floor behind you for support.  Inhale as you lift your left hand up, staying tall, hug your bent knee to twist clockwise.  Hold for 5 breaths.  Repeat on the other side.

For the rest of this routine, go to our blog page.

Back to School and Everyone Needs More Sleep...
Bedtime Snacks to Help My Child Sleep!

By: Michelle Miller, MSACN
The key is protein! Protein before bed helps to keep blood sugar levels better balanced throughout the night. This helps satisfy our brain while we sleep so that we stay asleep.

When we have sugary foods before bed, our energy levels react to our blood sugar levels going up, and down, and then up again. It not only makes it hard to wind down before bed, but also makes it more difficult to stay asleep.

Have a sweet tooth at night, but don't want it to keep you up?

These dark chocolate peanut butter quinoa balls may just be the snack you're looking for! Adapted from Alyssa 'The Queen of Quinoa' at www.queenofquinoa.me.
