August 2014

Greetings!

When my two girls were younger they attended camp every summer.  Like many parents, my husband and I felt it was a great way for them to meet new people, have fun and open their world to new experiences.

Plus, with the variety of camp activities and structured days, they would return home each summer looking fit and healthy.

So, it's no surprise when I hear parents say to me, "I wish my child could continue being as active as they were in camp."

This is why, since the beginning of Energetic Juniors in 1996, our personal training programs have been designed to help children maintain these activity levels after summer camp is over.

If your children are like mine, they will return from camp itching for activity, and not just any activity, lots of variety. This is a critical time to take advantage of your child's interest in a new sport, dance or fitness game that they played while at camp.

When designing our post-summer camp personal training programs we use this information to customize each session. The outcome is a program that is focused, engaging, fun and most of all keeps your child fit and healthy.

With school starting soon, now is the time to register your child to work with one of our caring and qualified Energetic Juniors Fitness Trainers.

that summer

camp is over

child will go

back to watching endless hours of TV and playing video

games, then try these fitness games.

Each game is designed to mimic summer camp games,

which are high energy, challenging and fun.  Your help

will be required.

Do As I Say, Not As I Do:

The goal of this game is for your child to follow the movements that you are telling them to do.  Your job is to try and confuse them by showing them a different movement.

August 2014 is Kids Eat Right Month!
By Andrea Robbins, M.S., HHC
Family Wellness Counselor

Kids Eat Right is created by an initiative of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and its Foundation.  You can learn more on their website, www.eatright.org.

How can we help 'kids eat right?'  Below are 5 tips to help foster healthy nutrition and an active lifestyle for the whole family.  Embedded is the idea that children learn by doing.  So what better way to learn about healthy food and cooking than by participating in it?

  1. Enlist your child(ren) to help plan the menu.  They can help by contributing their ideas for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
  2. Give your child(ren) the job of writing up the shopping list.
  3. Bring your child(ren) to the grocery store.
-Explain to your child(ren) that the perimeter of the
grocery store is usually where you can find the
most nutritious, least processed, whole food items.
-If you want your family to eat nutritious, healthy
food, then buy nutritious, healthy food.
  4. Allow children to help prepare, chop and cook the meals.  By feeling ownership over the process, they are more likely to eat the food.
  5. Make a commitment to eat as a family (without electronics).
-Teach and model mindful eating: By eliminating
distractions and focusing on our food--flavors and
textures--, we tend to eat slower and know when
we have had enough, therefore decreasing the
           chance of overeating.
-Family meals allow you to catch up on the day and
           connect.
