Greetings!

The following are a few words from a former Energetic Juniors child who had emailed me. This says it all:

"My name is Kyle, and I was once a client of Energetic Juniors. Currently, I am a sophomore in college. Due in part to Energetics, I was able to lose sixty pounds between the ages of 14 and 17. I play baseball for my school, at the Division III level, and I have four years of baseball coaching experience with kids ages 9-12. Since Energetics helped me transform my life, I have experienced the good it can do, and would like to be a part of it. I will be home for the summer, and I was wondering if there are any positions as trainers available?"

This client's experience exemplifies what we try to foster daily here at Energetic Juniors.  Our goal is always to inspire you to get you, your children or your patients moving and to provide the most updated research on fitness and children from our expert youth fitness specialists.  Here's to a healthy and inspiring summer!

Children Addicted to Screens: TV, Computer, and Video NYC

With the summer months upon us, it is tempting for children to spend their sudden free time indoors, either playing on the computer, playing video games, or watching television.  We are honored that Dr. Joshua Rosenthal, New York Licensed Clinical Psychologist, shared his opinions on this subject based on his years of professional experience working with children.

Here is an excerpt from his article:

"It is not uncommon for me to hear about parents concerned that their child is addicted to 'screens' (e.g. TV, computers, video games, and portable gaming systems like the "DS").  While a little screen time can serve as a great reward for hard work, a lot of screen time can have negative consequences."

Ask the Expert

This month, we received a question from 2 parents who wanted to know if resistance training would be right for their child.

Energetics Trainer Christine Washburn demystifies much of the misinformation surrounding children's resistance training.  Here is an excerpt from the letter she wrote back to those 2 parents:

"There are a lot of myths surrounding resistance training for children under age 13, and I am about to dispel the most important myths:

1. Resistance training has been shown to cause NO damage to the growth plate and does NOT stunt long bone growth.  In fact, resistance training has been shown, scientifically, to improve bone density in children.

2. Resistance training is not dangerous.  In fact, children who do resistance training are at a significantly lowered risk for sports-related injuries because of improved reflexes, muscular strength, bone strength, and coordination.

3. Even very heavy weightlifting is safe for children as young as age five, up to 95% of a child's one repetition maximum, or the amount of weight that causes muscle failure after a single lift."

Visit our blog to read more of her letter.  Stay tuned next month to find out what else Christine has to say about kids' resistance training.

"Charlie had his first Little League practice this morning and afterwards he walked home on cloud nine.
He feels he may be able to be in the pitching rotation, the coach told him how much he had improved and that he thinks Charlie will be a key player this year.  It was the best athletic experience of Charlie's life.  Last year when he left the first practice he told me that 'now all the kids know I'm the worst player on the team.'  What an amazing change."
