Greetings!
I still love what I do after all these years. I get to introduce children of all ages to the joy of moving their bodies and help them to become healthier young people through Energetic Juniors' talented, caring, and educated Youth Fitness trainers.
In this month's newsletter, watch a group of 4- and 5-year-olds have fun during a yoga class with the amazing Deana Bonafiglia! Also learn about Basketball Skills Specialist, Mike Deutsch.
Also in this newsletter, read about EJ's Pre-Camp Program. As after-school activities are winding down and camp is on the horizon for many NYC children and teens, what will your kids do during those lazy days before camp? With EJ's Pre-Camp Program, find ways to help keep your family active in spite of their different daily schedules.
Finally in this issue, learn how to help boost your child's interest in sports. When children are not as physically skilled as other kids on the playground or in gym class, they can easily become discouraged and not want to participate in the sports that will help keep them physically and mentally fit. We show you how to turn discouragement into encouragement and help develop in your child a lifelong enthusiasm for sports. Enjoy!

"Charlie had his first Little League practice this morning and afterwards he walked home on cloud nine.
He feels he may be able to be in the pitching rotation, the coach told him how much he had improved and that he thinks Charlie will be a key player this year. It was the best athletic experience of Charlie's life. Last year when he left the first practice he told me that 'now all the kids know I'm the worst player on the team.' What an amazing change."
- Mom of 10 yr. old Charlie -

Meet Basketball Skills specialist, Mike Deutsch!
Frustrated with your son or daughters' lack of progress in basketball? Mike's Basketball Skills coaching is unique because he prioritizes skills and life lessons.
Mike has an alternative approach to teaching hoops; EVERY kid, no matter how tall, fast or big has a temporary "blind spot" or an area of improvement and, in order to overcome it, must attack it through repetition. He also mixes in lots of fun and life lessons so that EVERY kid and parent can win.
"I would like to stress that what is different about my lessons is the life lessons kids learn. I stress 'Mike's Rules of Sports,' (i.e. Be a great leader). Every kid repeats and applies the rules."--Basketball Skills specialist, Mike Deutsch--

Showing your child that sports can be fun!!!

Do you find your child is uninterested or discouraged when he/she plays sports? If so, you might be wondering how you can boost your child's enthusiasm for physical activity. Here are some tips from our EJ trainers to help get your child more active and more excited about sports.
What to do Engage in simple sports games, and engineer the outcome so your child can win most of the time. This will build their confidence and allow them to start seeing that sports can be fun. However, children also need to understand they can't always win whatever game they are playing, so don't make things too easy. Soccer is a great game to use as a springboard for your child. There is very little equipment involved and you can easily adapt the rules to the environment. If you only have an indoor space, you can use a sponge instead of a ball.
There could be many reasons your child may not be interested in sports, but you should ask yourself the following questions before deciding on the best plan of action.
Questions you should consider:
- Does anyone in the household have an interest in sports?
- Do his/her friends show an interest or participate in sports?
- What happens in gym class when he/she participates in sports? Is he/she less skilled than most children in the class? This doesn't do much for children's self-esteem, thus making them uninterested in participating.
Each child has different needs, but every child can become more confident, enthusiastic, and skilled with sports. The important thing is to get them on the right track.
