ANNOUNCING JOHN I HAAS HOPS ACADEMY RECIPIENT: CHARLOTTE COOK

The Pink Boots Society is proud to announce that Charlotte Cook has been selected as the recipient of the 2014 John I. Haas Hops Academy Scholarship.

Charlotte is a brewer at BrewDog, Scotland's largest independent brewery.

The PBS Scholarship Selection Committee (SSC) is made up of two teams, each made up of five very experienced women beer professionals who hold positions as brewers, beer educators and beer writers. The SSC was impressed with the way Charlotte compared her brewing with hops, to a chef who specializes in pork but who's never actually seen a pig due to her location far away from any hops, and therefore... click here to read rest of article.

VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHT - ELANE TONER - FORMER PBS FUNDRAISING ADMINISTRATOR

In the spring of 2014, Elaine Toner volunteered at Pink Boots Society as the Fundraising Administrator. She also helped Hilary Jurinak start the Chicago Chapter of Pink Boots Society.

Elaine served as Fundraising Administrator till her work in the craft beer industry pulled her away, when she joined the opening team of a new beer bar in Chicago. In the industry, she has been manager and beer buyer at Chicago's The Gage and is currently the AGM and bar manager at a sausage and craft beer joint, Kaiser Tiger.

She has attended The Doemens Academy Beer Sommelier course at The Siebel Institute and plans to sit for the Certified Cicerone exam this year.

You can stay in touch with Elaine at www.linkedin.com/in/elainetoner and on Twitter @lanietone78.

VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHT - ANNIE TOBEY - PBS MINI-BIO WRITER

As a professional freelance beer journalist, Annie Tobey naturally fits into her role as mini-bio writer. Based in Richmond, VA, Annie churns out at least two short newsletter bios per month (like this one!) to highlight the contributions of her fellow members.

Her position not only helps connect her to women in the industry - some of whom we hope become sources for stories - but helps PBS by recognizing the importance of volunteers to the organization. The more volunteers, she says, the stronger the group.

"My work can help allow PBS to continue to support women in the industry," she emails between deadlines for publications like CraftBeer.com, Beer Advocate, All About Beer Blue Ridge Country, Richmond Navigator magazines and other national and local publications.

RFV: REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEERS
We have an immediate need for 2 volunteers...
  • PBS & Women-in-Beer Historian
  • National Meetings Registration Lists Manager
And we have a new link to our Become A Volunteer page. We hope you will consider helping. The more info we have on what you're good at and what you want to do, the more likely we can find the right match.

Click here to volunteer! Please give us the link to your online resume in the Comment Box if you have one. Thank you!
MINUTES FROM CRAFT BREWERS CONFERENCE MEETING, by ALVA MATHER

CBC Meeting Minutes

PBS 2014 National Meeting

Denver, Colorado USA

Thursday, April 10, 2014

11am to 1pm

Teri Fahrendorf kicked off the meeting introducing herself, the history of Pink Boots Society ("PBS") as well as its mission and importance within the beer community. Started in June 2007 PBS has grown in membership and attendance at its annual meetings. Total PBS boasts over 1,000 members registered on its website and increased its attendance at the annual meeting from last year's 140 to 172 in Denver today.

Moving forward, the coming year's goal is to fund PBS so it can officially hire Emily Engdahl as its Executive Director, and pay her a stipend. Click here for the rest of the minutes

SPEAKING OF EMILY ENGDAHL...
Speaking of Emily Engdahl, our new Executive Director...

Emily is now your main point of contact for Pink Boots Society for anything you used to contact me (Teri) about. You can reach her at emily@pinkbootssociety.org.

After 7 years of fun and amazement; stretching, reaching, building and growing our healthy and productive 501(c) 3 nonprofit international scholarship-generating, networking, chapter-creating, women-empowering and beer-professional-connecting organization, I need a breather. And I need to connect with my other hobbies, including reconnecting to actual beer and brewing by homebrewing this fall. You'll still see me plenty! But Emily will be handing the daily operations as of November 1st. Please support her. Thanks everybody!                                                         ~~Teri Fahrendorf

LUCKILY TIMES HAVE CHANGED FOR CREATIVE WOMEN!

This actual 1938 rejection letter from Walt Disney Animation Studios was received by one of our creative sisters of the past. I am happy to live in modern times where a creative woman doesn't have to read something like the second paragraph which states:

"Women do not do any of the creative work in connection with preparing the cartoons for the screen, as that work is performed entirely by young men. For this reason girls are not considered for the training school."

Click here for a closer look. Maybe they needed a Pink Brush Society back then?
