Oakland Pride Parade and Festival
Sunday, September 11, 2016

CCNC-N is marching in the Oakland Pride Parade and hosting an information booth at the Pride Festival.

We invite everyone (that includes you!) to join us as we demonstrate, by our presence and by our actions, our belief that "All Means All". We hope that every congregation in the region is represented on that day.

The parade route is approximately a half mile long (from Broadway & 14th Street to Broadway & 20th Street) but we will be walking further than that because we will not be first in line. If you would like to participate but you do not feel physically able to march, we do need people to staff the information booth and to mix and mingle at the festival. Please sign up for an hour or two so that we have coverage for the duration of the festival. Our booth will have a table and two folding chairs, covered by a canopy. Please feel free to bring your favorite camp chair!

Our goal is to have an unmistakable, unified presence in the parade and at the festival, so we will carry a banner in the parade (which will also be displayed at our booth), and we will have T-shirts available for purchase so that everyone will know that we are Disciples of Christ! (Details coming soon.)

The parade begins at 10:30, and we will need to gather well before that time in order to line up to march. We will let you know the call time when we have more details. View the parade map
here.
Festival hours are 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. View the festival map here.
Festival admission: $10 General / $5 Children Under 12
Oakland Pride is a family-friendly Pride celebration.

Anti-Racism Training, Part 2

Containing Compassion Fatigue through Performance Psychology Skills
Rev. Dr. Keith Wilson, Performance Trainer
This Boundaries Training is schedule for September 24th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at UCC Livermore.Lunch is provided. Cost to be determined. Arrangements for childcare can be maid if there is need from more than two attendees. This boundaries training meets the annual requirement, but is not a replacement for the Healthy Clergy Boundaries Training which is required for clergy every three year. For more information, call the Regional Office.

The workshop is based on performance psychology which Dr. Wilson teaches on a daily basis and issues of compassion fatigue that h contained while being a full time mental health provider for over 20 years. The workshop starts with the concept of the clergy person being in the "zone of optimal performance." This is the state where emotional and physiological states are in optimal intensity so the professional can perform at their best in the moment. Clearly, the zone is different when preaching than doing pastoral care. It is different in a church meeting or having lunch with a parishioner.

Many stressors impact the clergyperson's ability to be self-aware of changing situations and making the appropriate shifts in physiological state and attention strategies. The number of stressors which impact clergy are significant and would include as example: 1) physiological exhaustion, 2) emotional exhaustion, 3) interrupted sleep, 4) unreasonable expectation of parishioners, 5) too many hours of work a week, and 6) emotional strain of hospital or office pastoral care.

There are many strategies to combat these stressors which are important to utilize. This workshop will focus on performance skills which can be used throughout the day and in any environment. One does not have to wait to be at home or on vacation to address these stressors. Specific skills which will be taught include:
  1. Physiological modulation which can be done in any situation to bring the system to a more effective state,
  2. Rumination control to help shut down the brain at night while trying to go to sleep,
  3. Attention control skills to recognize specific skills to use to reduce the stress of an attentional mismatch and
  4. Cognitive skills to help refine thinking concerning successes and failures.

Mission First Prayer

Visio divina meditation
  1. After reading the verse, take a moment to recognize what is in the photo.
  2. How are the parts of the fire the same? How are they different?
  3. Where is the work happening in the fire? In the parts being consumed in the center or on the periphery?
  4. Does this have anything to say to you about your involvement in mission? About your congregation? About the Church?
  • Look for the places in your community this week that could use some warmth. Make a list as you move around. At the end of the week, compare that list to what is happening in your faith community to see if new opportunities reveal themselves.
Prayer: Creator and Redeemer - Hear our prayer for new fire to share your love for the world shown to us so completely in the form of Christ Jesus. And we pray that we may listen for your peace and BE your peace on the earth.
