CGC 60th Anniversary

In 1994, a history of the Community of the Great Commission was written and published by Dave Babayco, a member of Arden Christian Church in Sacramento,

The camp will be celebrating it's 60th Anniversary in 2019. Dave has once again taken on the chore of updating the history.

He needs your help!  Please send your stories and camp group photos to the following email address:  TheCGCPhotoGuy@mail.com. Be sure to give written permission for your stories and/or photos to be used.

Clergy Keeping In Touch

Staying in touch while we're not in the same place (like the regional church's Annual Gathering) is an appealing idea but often goes by the wayside when we get back home.

Here's an idea that might be of interest to you - include one church of our region in your pastoral prayer each week.

Choose a church and call the pastor. Have a chat with a colleague. Ask if he or she would like your church to pray for theirs. Ask what they would like you to lift up on their behalf. Then make that prayer on Sunday.

It's not the same as being together, but if you do this every week it will still take more than a year, so before you're done you'll be together again with friends both old and new.

The Vagina Monologues

We want to promote healthy sexuality in connection with church and our spiritual lives. Our production of The Vagina Monologues shows an unashamed and loving view of the bodies that the Creator shaped. Our local Disciples and UCC women will be in the performance!

This is a Trans Women inclusive event. If you're interested in performing (no experience required) or in assisting hospitality or publicity, contact Veronica Dise-Hodge at peaceandblessings2020@gmail.com.

Special Feature
THE PASTOR'S LIFE

The death of a parent is a difficult thing to talk about with any child (no matter what their age), but what do we do with those children who do not have the gift of words?  How can we help them understand why a parent is gone from their lives?

Our oldest son is autistic.  He lives in a group home in San Jose and he has very limited communication skills.  I put off telling him about his mother's death until after the funeral service.  I prayed for some way to let him comprehend this huge change in his life without thinking that Mama had abandoned him or didn't love him anymore.

I decided to take a photograph of Wanda snuggling with him one Christmas Day with me as I journeyed to his home.  I also took a scarf she often wore - and a can of Diet Coke (which she always had within arm's reach!).

I started jabbering as soon as he got in the car.  It was raining so I couldn't go to the park (which was my original plan because Wanda and I often took him to there).  I asked him lots of "yes and no" questions to engage him as I talked.  He always answered - but I knew I wasn't really "getting through." He was far more interested in getting to Hometown Buffet (his favorite restaurant) than he was in trying to keep up with his old man's nervous chattering.

When we walked into the restaurant, Mac immediately rushed to sit in our usual table, took his glass to get his drink and went up to "over-fill" his plate with fried chicken, pizza, taco beef, and fries.  It's always amazing to me to see Mac eat.  He thoroughly enjoys every bite - and seems to have a bottomless stomach!

But that's when the miracle happened.  Something hit him as he got ready to "lick the platter clean."  He tensed up - becoming still as a statue just staring at the empty chair beside me.  His expression became panicked. I think that was the moment he saw that Mama was not there.

He looked so sad.  He darted his eyes up to mine furtively, seeing if I was sad too.  I told him again that Mama was in heaven.  He made a deep sound and then stood up quickly and picked up his empty glass.  He came back with his diet coke glass filled . . . and he had brought another glass of diet coke and put it where Wanda would have sat.
I cried a bit.  He stood up, went to the buffet and brought me back a cookie.
I think he got it.

 Thank you, Lord!
