Call of the Congregations

"Budgets are not about money, they are about values." (a politician from where I used to live).

We are in stewardship season as many congregations are making decisions about their mission giving and their support for their pastors and staff. The decisions that are made are values decisions.  What is it we value in the Christian Church of Northern California-Nevada? Do we give high importance to all of the ministries offered to our congregations? Of course. Congregations are the foundation from which our Regional Church will grow. When we have strong congregations, we have a strong Regional Church and our strong Regional Church will help the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) to be a stronger witness to the good news of Jesus Christ.

I continue to be encouraged and excited by the wonderful ways our congregations are making a difference in people's lives. And I am also excited about the other ministries we value. We hold as important the faith formation of children, youth, and adults as they are nurtured at Community of the Great Commission. We want to support our Mission Clusters, and other ministries offered in our Regional Church.

You can help to say, "Yes, I value the ministries that make CCNC-N stronger." Here is how:

  • Pray daily for your congregation and discern what God is calling you to do there.
  • Pray daily for your Regional Church Staff as we support congregations and their ministries.
  • Participate in at least one of the ministries of your congregation --- or as many as you choose.
  • Plan to attend Annual Gathering April 8-9 at First Christian Church in Concord
  • Individuals can still contribute to our Annual Fund. You can make your contribution online at www.ccncn.org
  • Congregations can receive the Christmas Special Day offering, one of the six special day offerings received by the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). 100% of the funds raised for the Christmas Offering will remain in Northern California-Nevada.

Please consider prayerfully the ways you and your congregation can help to strengthen our Regional Church.

Blessings,
Rev. Dr. LaTaunya M. Bynum
Regional Minister

Laughter is the Best Medicine for Holiday Blues!

Join us at Arden Christian Church on Friday, December 4 at 7:00 p.m. for an evening of Christian comedy and inspiration as we welcome Stephen B, a stand-up comedian with more than 33 years of experience performing in comedy clubs, corporate clients, and churches nationwide.

Stephen B has opened up for Julio Iglesias, Manhattan Transfer, Weird Al and a host of other headlining musical acts over the years. He has had supporting roles in three movies and has been seen on Comedy Central. He has performed at Spirit West Coast and on the KLOVE Cruise and has just released his first book, The Road to Selfdom.

The event is FREE, but we'll take an offering to show support for Stephen's hilarious ministry of sharing the Word through laughter. And.... to make the most of the evening, consider joining us for a Christmas party potluck dinner starting at 5:30. Bring your yummies, your friends, neighbors, and families, and then laugh your cares away!

Arden Christian Church is located at 4300 Las Cruces Way Sacramento, CA 95864-3191.

The Complacency Paradox

I am not good at change. I know what you are thinking: "But Mel, you just moved halfway across the country with people you didn't know two months ago to do this NBA XPLOR program." I know, team; let me try my best to explain.

I am not good at change, but I crave it. Being in the same place for long periods of time makes me squirm. I can't even sit still for an extended amount of time without getting fidgety. It still doesn't make very much sense, does it? Okay, let's try this one more time.

I am not good at change, but I am also not good at routine. I live my life in what I am going to call "The Complacency Paradox," that place in life where I so often sit, longing for a comfortable life and striving for a revolutionary one. The place where change makes me nervous, stepping out of my comfort zone takes the most effort, but if I don't do it, I get stuck, and being stuck is worse. So, that is the place I write this from-the place of change and what it looks like for someone who both embraces it and tries her best to avoid it.
