Relief request for Lake County

On October 6, Vy Nguyen, Minister of Week of Compassion and I visited with Shannon Kimbell-Auth, pastor of United Christian Parish in Lakeport, a congregation of the Disciples, United Methodist, and Presbyterian (USA) churches. Reverend Kimbell-Auth talked to us about the congregation's response to people who have been impacted by the fires in Lake County.

The visit was informative and as the attached pictures indicate, the visit gave us a heartbreaking look at the devastation and random nature of the fire.

There were instances in which a home has been destroyed totally while the house next to it was untouched.

In Middletown, a strip mall and the apartment complex around it were destroyed; the children's playground equipment was largely untouched and still stands.

All three of UPC's partner churches are offering support. Here is how you can too.

While there will be opportunities for hands on help beginning in a few months. Right now the immediate need is for funds to help with the ongoing costs of displacement such as providing necessary supplies, replacing lost documents, providing temporary housing, and other needs.

Every need is different and your financial support can help to bring relief to someone's life.

You can double the effectiveness of your donation in the following way:

From now until the end of the month, for every gift Disciples churches in this region make toward fire relief in Lake County, Week of Compassion will match it up to $10,000.

The address for Week of Compassion is:
PO Box 1986
Indianapolis IN 46206

We thank God that the fires are 100% contained. We ask God's presence and your support for the ongoing work of helping people who have been displaced and left homeless by the fires.

Ministry Appreciation Month!

It's Ministerial Appreciation Month. Let us show our minister how much we appreciate all the work they have been doing. The bible commands us "to honor [the] leaders who work so hard for [us], who have been given the responsibility of urging and guiding [us] along in [our] obedience. Overwhelm them with appreciation and love!"

Here are things you or your group can do to show appreciation to you minister:

(1)    Send your minister a thank you card. To make giving thank you card more fun, order a giant thank you card through amazon or any store that sells it. Ask everyone in your congregation or group to write a thank you message. The card is big enough to paste pictures or put hand paints and it comes with an envelope. The question is how much stamp is needed in order to send the card via mail. Or you can buy a regular size thank you card and let everyone in your congregation or group sign it.You can also send individual thank you card.

(2)    Organize a surprise thank you party. If you know your minister's office hour or if your minister has office hour, organize a surprise thank you party with food and entertainment. Be sure to arrive at the office before your minister does and be sure you know someone who has key to the building or just wait in the parking lot for your minister to arrive. Ask participants to contribute money for the food or to bring food and to think of any activities, like karaoke and board games, to do during the event.

(3)    Make a short video. Record everyone saying thank you or a phrase of gratefulness (people can say thank you in different languages) and compile all the clips and put them together to make a short thank you video.

(4)    Dedicate a song to your minister. Gather your band or choir members or church singers or you can sing solo and dedicate a worship song to your minister.

(5)    Doodle Thank You using stuffed toys. Buy a doodle bear or paper bear/monkey and use this stuffed toy to write thank you message or doodle message to your minister. You can also use different items such as T-shirt and pillow or pillow case. Be creative, use different colors marker.

(6)    Give your minister a plant or bouquet of flowers. Bring a plant or bouquet of flowers and personally give the item to your minister or send the item to your minister's home address with a short message of thankfulness.

(7)    Simply say, "Thank You." Show your gratefulness to your minister by simply taking a moment and telling him/her she/he has been helpful to you and just say thank you.

Starting a Young Adult Ministry

It has been my hope and prayer to one day have a strong young adult ministry at my home church, Filipino Disciples Christian Church (FDCC). Most young adults are part of J1.5, FDCC's worship band, so it would seem like it would be easier to have young adult ministry.

Starting a young adult ministry and retaining it becomes difficult - almost to the point of impossible. Everyone just seem so busy to gather together for young adult fellowship. Part of my role as XPLOR Intern working in Christian Church Northern California-Nevada (CCNC-N) is to find a way to cultivate a space for young adults for relationship, worship and spiritual formation, leadership growth, and service in mission.

However, I cannot do this without the help: help to pray for young adult ministry to become a reality not just a vision and help in brainstorming, planning, and encouraging young adult to become involve at their local congregation and the region, from CCNC-N leaders. Prayer warriors, please pray for this ministry. Young adult leaders, please step up and let us build this ministry together. Young adults, please get excited to fellowship with one another. It still my hope and prayer to one day have a strong young adult ministry.

Please, if you have any questions, opinions, and/or comments and if you want to help build young adult ministry in the region, do not hesitate to contact me, Eula Nicola Pagdilao CCNC-N XPLOR Intern, by phone at 925-556-9900 or by email at eula@ccncn.org.

Elders' Retreat
Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing. But we appeal to you, brothers and sisters, to respect those who labor among you, and have charge of you in the Lord and admonish you; esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. (1 Thessalonians 5:11-13, NRSV) This event is a time for those currently serving as elders in a DOC church to renew their understanding of what it means to be an Elder, to share wisdom and gain insight about the practice of Eldership, and to refresh themselves in the fellowship and communion of the regional church.
When does this happen? The event will begin on Friday, October 23rd at 7 pm and end after lunch on Saturday, October 24th.

New Video Promoting Bring a Friend to Church Day!

Breaking news coverage for the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Selma, California, on a newly created newscast! "Bring a Friend Sunday" is an event that the church has coordinated to reach out to individuals who are looking for a church home or are searching for "that missing something." A young adult member took a humorous spin on this for a promotional video for the church! Prayerfully, we hope this video encourages others to take a leap of faith in sharing their stories with others and, with God's help, lead our churches and denomination to grow spiritually, as well as numerically, into a thriving church full of unconditional love and welcome to ALL at the Table. Enjoy!
