REFLECTIONS
Yolanda Marquez-Lucar
Re-Lent
Rev. Yolanda Márquez-Lúcar
Associate Regional Minister

"The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, Oh God, you will not despise"
Psalm 51:17

As we start lent, I used the newly published "RE-LENT" Lent Devotional 2015 by The Stillspeaking Writers' Group, from a group of Ministers and Authors from the United Church of Christs.  Today's meditation, I believe, is worth sharing with as many people as possible.  It is my prayer WE (yes YOU and ME!) take up the challenge before us, and then be ready to see God's power, grace, and mercy overflow through us to the communities (family) where we constantly preach with our daily life witness.

"Traditionally, LENT is thought of a season of repentance, a time of giving up and turning our lives around -- or at least trying to.  Now, what if we thought about LENT instead as,
a time of giving in rather than giving up?
a time to "relent"; to back off imposing our wills on everything?
a time to let go of the need for control and let God be God?

LENT happens every year, but you may experience it anew! Do LENT over again in a fresh way!
This year, MAKE LENT the time you practice giving in to God's amazing grace.

Accept our broken spirits and contrite hearts, O God,
as an acceptable offering to you,
and take away the power of death from our lives...
for we ask in th sweet name of Jesus, Your Son, Our Savior
Amen.

Regional Mission Trip Deadline Will Be Here Soon

Regional Mission Trip Deadline Will Be Here Soon

As Disciples of Christ, we are called to be servants with our neighbors. Most of the time, we answer this call to serve within our own community. However, serving beyond our local community provides an opportunity to extend our service and expand our faith. Traveling to serve should be guided by the same principles with which we live out our faith in service at home. When traveling to another community to serve, therefore, we still support a Local Mission of that community.

Anyone who is interested in participating in the Regional Hands-on Mission Trip to Loveland, CO, should send the registration form and a $50 deposit into the Regional Office before February 27th. Colorado experienced severe flooding in September of 2013 and there are still some people who, for a variety of reasons, still need help to make their homes livable again.

Spring Renewal Recap

Women's Action Web is now complete. I want to personally thank all those that made this event possible with your prayer, calls, emails, money, and time. Approximately 19 Speakers, 9 different cities, over 5 days and 4 nights. There were 8 women in our Core group who went on this journey together, others joined along the way in the different cities. It was enlightening, powerful and engaging. This is what one of the participants of the core group had to say about the trip, I believe it sums it up perfectly.

One of our first speakers warned that the chief danger when first learning about human trafficking was going from oblivion, to despair, and then to paralysis. Instead of paralysis, the trip brought me hope and relief that (1) law enforcement has increasing focused on intervention and the prosecution of traffickers, since the term human trafficking was first introduced in 2000, (2) communities are increasingly collaborating to respond to the problem, and most importantly (3) the original focus on the prosecution of prostitutes has shifted to their physical and emotional recovery. Even the traffickers can receive compassion; DePaul University research found that 88% had themselves been abused growing up. Obviously safe, sane childhoods actually prevent human trafficking. So fueled with new information, resources, contacts, and courage, I am eager to encourage awareness of trafficking and enhance efforts to give children the childhood they deserve. Law enforcement may have legal power; we have the spiritual power to end this tragedy-and we have each of the other trip participants to encourage us. By, K.R.

God Bless us All and May we find our Voice to Speak out!

OTHER AREAS OF INTEREST
Enrollment for DMin Open

Enrollment is open for the Doctor of Ministry program here

at Phillips.

People considering the program usually begin with these three questions:

How will this strengthen the church?

Educated clergy and lay leadership is a cornerstone of healthy, faithful congregational ministry. Continued learning with support and accountability enriches the spiritual and professional life of the student who brings learning home to local ministry.

How much time will this take?

Students are only required to come to campus two weeks in June and two weeks in January. Other work is done from home and over the internet. The program usually takes approximately five years depending on how long students spend in the final project phase.

How much will this cost?

The total cost is roughly $13,000 paid over 5-6 years in the program. Costs can vary depending on how many years the student spends in the program. Many students find financial support from their congregations or members for expenses. Student loans may also be an option for some students.
