REFLECTIONS

Kyung-Min-Daniel Lee

Come to think about it, this would be my first writing for e-news in the leadership of Rev. Mary Jacobs. I am grateful for her leadership and I appreciate her presence in the region. I am also glad to write this for this e-news when the regional NAPAD had just wrapped up the 4th Biennial Fall Celebration which was on September 7.  As you may know, the date of the celebration is one day before the beginning of the NAPAD Ministry Week. In this year it was September 9 thru 14 with the David Kagiwada Memorial Sunday on the 8th.

Allow me to share with you this link http://www.napad.net/Portals/NAPAD/PDF/2013Kagiwada%20Memorial%20Sunday.pdf. This will lead you to the 2013 Booklet of the Kagiwada Memorial Sunday and the NAPAD Ministry Week. Its cover page is written by the NAPAD Moderator, Rev. Dr. Janet Casey-Allen, who is an Indonesian-American. In it she tells a story about her experience with David Kagiwada, who is a Japanese-American and who in his early age went through the ill experience of the internment. Janet goes on to say that she had had an ill feeling of Japanese because of the historical occupying Japanese force in Asian countries including Indonesia. However, these two people had come to a relationship. How? In Jesus Christ. Janet saw David and his relationship with Christ, and she saw Christ in David. David's bitterness was overrun by his relationship with Christ. Likewise, Janet and her friend who were distrusting and fearing the Japanese were able to set aside the ill feelings of the Japanese (-American) through the power of the Spirit. The God of compassion gave them a different lenses to see David. They were able to approach David. They learned from each other. They saw Christ from each other. And they became one in Christ. They were in relationship. Isn't this why Jesus came down from heaven and was hung on the cross?

The theme of the 4th Celebration was "One in Christ," and the Disciple's only Mongolian pastor Rev. Ogi Lusvan gave the words of "One in Christ" in Ephesians 4:1-6 for the gathering worship. He said that we are called for relationship. In Christ we have relationship because we become one. I hope to believe that the God of One was happy and pleased when the nine (9) regional NAPAD churches had tried becoming "One in Christ." We worshiped together in the bond of peace; we ate at the same table with the same food and drink; and we fellowshipped with our own language, music, tradition, style, and taste through one Spirit. Yes, we shared with our own color, smell, talk, and even gesture. We were able to relate, appreciate, and learn from one another. Aren't these attitudes which manifest "One in Christ"?

I hope to believe that the pictures in the NAPAD Ministry of the regional website express some forms of effort being embodied "One in Christ." Yes, any authentic and genuine relationships come only in the power of God. Let us approach one another in Christ, for the power of the cross and the resurrection empowers us to make any relationships possible. Peace and Joy.

2013 Phon-a-thon

Yes, We're Getting There!

A few weeks ago, the announcement was published in the enews that the 2013 Phon-a-thon was on its way. A picture of a tree was included along with a short explanation of its origin. It was about Generosity.

It still it.

And how generous you have been....again.

$20,520

This is how much we have received in donations and pledges so far. This is a really great beginning! And, yet, we still have a ways to go to reach our goal of $25,000.

If you would like to make a 2013 Phon-a-thon pledge, it's not too late to let us know your plans. (We'd like to have the donation received by mid-October.) Please email (quan@ccncn.org) or phone (925-556-9900) the Regional Office. Or, you can contact me, Bill Garrett, Minister of Faith and Giving, by email at (bill@ccncn.org) or by phone at (916-899-8752).

If you are ready to make a donation, please mail it to the Regional Office: 9260 Alcosta Blvd.,  nullC-18, San Ramon, CA 94583 with "Phon-a-thon" in the memo section or click on our "Donate" button here in the e-news or on the CCNC-N website.

Your support for the ministries of CCNC-N is greatly appreciated. After all, it's all about Generosity.

Blessings, Bill Garrett, CCNC-N Minister of Faith and Giving

CCNC-N Women celebrate a Spirit and Light-filled Weekend
Fall Retreat at Mission Springs!

We had 115 women attend, with an additional 12 women joining us MS2013 Logojust for Saturday. These women were from 43 different Disciples and UCC churches.

We had an entertaining Bible Study with Vickie Firch, raised awareness about human trafficking, learned some self-defense, made large Chinese floating lanterns and watched them bring light to Sat.night! We learned about spiritual practices and the Walnut Ave. Women's Center in Santa Cruz (and collected tables full of donations for them). We had many opportunities to let our own lights shine in workshops and the talent show!  We basked in the incredible music of Sheila Howerter and Barbara Hamm.  We enjoyed the amazing sculpture of a woman radiating light from within made by Denise Turner and Coral Cogbill.  We were treated to new ways to hear scripture by Margie Brown, and of course, to amazing words and thoughts by the Rev. Dr. Mary Donovan Turner!  We enjoyed cookies Sat. evening provided by the women of Pacific Grove CC!

We collected an offering of $3200 to be shared among Week of Compassion, IDWM Women's Endowment Fund, and the Recovery Cafe Ministry of San Jose FCC!  If you were not present but would like to contribute to this offering, we are still accepting checks made out to CCNC-N and mailed to the regional office through Oct. 1.

We received $434 in donations for our women's "Angel Fund" (scholarships) to help women who need financial assistance attend events. (and an additional $358 given in donations with registrations!)

We counted $585.95 in Blessings!!

We are already looking forward to Fall Retreat, Sept. 12-14, 2014!  We are making the commitment of a minimum of 135 women to the retreat center--so we need everyone's help to spread the word and plan to come!  Gift Certificates of $10 and $25 are available from the Disciples Women page of the CCNCN Website. Ask for the gift of a retreat for Christmas--or just start putting away $10-25 a month now, and you will be ready when registration comes next June!

A huge thanks to the creative and faithful servants that planned the retreat: Coral Cogbill (Team Leader), Denise Turner, Lou Ann Hughes (registrar), Theresa Schmoll, Renae Earl, Michelle Nichol, Hope Attenhofer, and Margie Brown. You women are awesome! God Bless You!

Dear Regional Colleagues,

As you may know, most of the Front Range in Colorado is inundated, after roughly 40 hours straight of rain.  Please pray for your sister Regional Church, the Central Rocky Mountain Region, and the community we are seeking to serve in this time of crisis.

It has been a long, two years in the Central Rocky Mountain Regional Church: roughly 20+ wildfires, mass killing in Aurora CO and Casper WY, and now massive flooding all along the Front Range.  My heart is heavy and tired, yet continues to go out to the beautiful people your Disciples Church is serving in these times of uncertainty, fear, chaos and death.

In this time of disaster and fear, I am ever grateful for the work of Week of Compassion (WOC), of Brandon Gilvin, Amy Gopp, Dawn Barnes, and the rest of the ministers working for this wonderful ministry.  Brandon (the domestic relief person) and I have been in touch all day, and WOC has been quickly responding to needs as they arise.  Praise be to God!

In Christ,
Jose F. Morales Jr.
Executive Regional Minister
Central Rocky Mountain Region of the CC(DOC)
