REFLECTIONS

Sandhya Jha
The talent show at the Michigan Disciples Women's Retreat is a site to behold. (I'm not sure I'd want to place it in competition with the CCNC-N Women's Karaoke, but it's still very impressive.) This past weekend I watched churches bring skit after skit, with people rolling in the aisles.

We voted on the winner by applause, and something really stuck out at me: when it came down to two congregations, one congregation hooped and hollered so loudly for the other that the (smaller) congregation was almost forced to win. Perhaps part of why I was so moved was that the larger congregation was a Black congregation and the smaller one was White, but regardless, there was something beautiful about watching a group so determined to make sure the other group won. (The prize was a really and intentionally tacky flower arrangement-some of the flowers were actually zebra striped-so part of me wonders if the larger congregation was just determined not to be stuck with that arrangement.)

I'll be transitioning into a consulting role with the region effective July 1. Over the next six months, I'll wrap up a few projects particularly around racial reconciliation, but it will be a different role than when I was part of the ministry team. And so I want to pause for a moment and reflect briefly on what I have treasured in this region: it is when we holler loudly and boldly for the other guys to win.

I think about the folks from congregations where diversity is not an issue or a concern, who remain fiercely dedicated to our region's commitment to pro-reconciliation/anti-racism.

I think about folks in communities where everyone thinks like them, who intentionally reach out to form relationships with people in this region from a very different worldview or experience.

I think about congregations with enough resources to balance their budgets, who work in partnership with congregations that struggle financially.

It is hard not to be motivated by fear these days, and I see it in church board meetings and budget decisions and reticence to participate in the broader community because the immediate community has so many of its own needs. But at our best, we're cheering for the other guy to win. And I find myself picturing how alive and vital the congregations of our region will be when we find ourselves able to practice that spiritual discipline. I'm reminded of a story of two ancient monks (from the group called the Desert Fathers and Mothers):

"Two Desert Fathers had been living together as hermits for many years and had never gotten into a fight. One of them said to the other, "Why don't we do like everybody else in the world and get into a fight?" The other fellow said, "O.K., how do you do it?" He said, "Well, fights start over possessions, owning something exclusively so that the other fellow can't have it. Let's look around and get ourselves a possession and then have a fight over it." So he found a brick and said, "I will put this brick between us, and I will say, 'This is my brick,' and you will immediately say, 'No, it's mine,' and then we will get into a fight." So the man gets the brick and puts it down between the two of them and says, "This is my brick." And the other says, "Well, brother, if it is your brick, take it."

Story retold by Thomas Merton (1915-1968) in Why We Live in Community by Eberhard Arnold (Robertsbridge, UK: Plough, 1995), pp. 65-66.

It has been an honor to walk with you on this profound journey of transformation and reconciliation, and to have been cheered on by so many of you so many times. I cannot wait to see what unfolds in the life of this region in the coming years as we become more and more God's cheerleaders for one another.

Gracefully,

Pastor Sandhya Jha

Namaste', Sandhya, it has been an honor to walk with you!  Sandhya will continue in a consultant role with us through the rest of 2013.  On Saturday December 7, 1-3 PM, we will celebrate her ministry with us at a Regional Advent Open House at the Regional Office in San Ramon.

Let me add an important Postscript to this Reflections piece.  Sandhya has often directed our commitment and actions as Minister for Reconciliation toward becoming a Pro-Reconciling-Anti-Oppression church.  In the 1990's, CCNC-N claimed the identity of being an open and inclusive Region. This week a momentous decision was made by the Supreme Court regarding DOMA.  One person stated that it was not about who "won" but about how we are "one."  One in our longing  to celebrate loving relationships in an outward expression of commitment.  It is about creating family out of two lives.  It is about hearing the deep hopes and dreams of others.  Let us in the effort to live into being a church of reconciliation and justice listen carefully to our GLTBQ brothers and sisters and acknowledge with love what a deeply moving and hopeful decision it is for them.

In grateful partnership,

Mary

MORE ABOUT SUMMER CAMPS

Safety to and from Camp:
A recommendation from our Insurance Company - Heffernan Insurance

It is our recommendation that drivers going to church/regional events should be between the ages of 25-65 years old.  Philadelphia Indemnity, the insurance company, specifically discourages anyone under the age of 21 from driving to or on behalf of church/regional events.  Driving laws vary from state-to-state, however California prohibits sixteen year old drivers from driving during certain time frames and with any passengers.  We strongly encourage churches to abide by these guidelines for the safety of their drivers and congregation.

Thoughts & Prayers
Please hold in prayer the family of Coral Cogbill and her children, Jessica Bradley and Adam Bradley, as Coral's mother is nearing the end of her battle with cancer.

Remember the family of Bruce Kieft, leader at First Christian Church of Fremont
for a very long time, including leading the church through the merger discernment with Niles Congregational Church and into the two churches becoming Niles Discovery Church, died on June 21 after a spirited struggle with cancer.  A celebration of his life will be held Friday, July 12, 5:00 PM. The service will be held at the future home of Niles Discovery Church, 36600 Niles Blvd, Fremont.

Please pray for Rev. Dr. Gloria Wilson's sons
, MaShon who has returned from Afghanistan safe and unharmed but needs prayer for transition and SSG Paul Wilson, Jr., who is stationed in Germany.

We continue to hold the Linhoff family and FCC, Selma in our prayers following Scott's recent death
We especially are surrounding Dawn and the children with our care as they finish the week at Camp Pacifica

Dwight  Carlson completed his race of faith and commitment.  We hold Virginia, his spouse, and his children and grandchildren in our care and prayers in this journey of grief. You may send notes and cards of care to Virginia Carlson at 1629 E. Sunnyview Avenue, Visalia, CA 93292-7304, and Michael, Molly, Adam and Simon Carlson at 412 Goldrun Drive, Modesto, CA 95354.
We celebrate the multitude of ways that Dwight has served in the life and ministry of the Region, congregation and community.  He has served as legal counsel offering his gifts and skills as a lawyer for many years until his death.  With the vision of beginning 40 new churches in many forms, he has given leadership to the New Church Ministry Committee that has helped the Region live into that commitment.  His gifts as clergy in our midst expressed his deep faith and love for the Gospel of Jesus the Christ.  Thanks be to God for Dwight's presence among us.

Please surround Kelsey, Tom, Shellie and Brett Warren with your love and prayers as the long process of healing for Kelsey begins following her accident.  Kelsey's address is:

Dear Family, Friends and Well Wishers: I'm sharing with my community that I've been selected to go on a Woman-to-Woman trip this September to Mexico, and I wish for your prayers for a successful trip!

When: Sept. 16th-27th, 2013
Where: Central Mexico, around Guadalajara and Aguacalientes & more
What: My international women's church group--the Disciples Women of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) selected women from around the U.S and Canada to travel to central Mexico to see what is being done to improve the lives of women and children there. So we will be meeting with our Global Missions ministry partners, government officials, advocates in non-profits working for social justice causes, and the women and children of that area.
Result: hope of new relationships, increased advocacy, and I will come back and give presentations on what I saw and learned. If you would like for me to invite you to a slideshow presentation let me know, or if you would like me to come to a gathering, I will.

As of this e-mail, the final itinerary is not yet set, though I know that we will be in and around Guadalajara for the majority of the trip. I am very excited to learn how this part of the world sees women and children, and how we in the U.S.A. can partner with those in Mexico to improve their livelihoods. As I prepare for this trip, I am inspired by Jesus' own concern for the vulnerable in his society, including women and children.

I invite all who are interested in following my trip and thoughts to read my updates on Facebook where I will be narrating my preparation for the trip (both physical and spiritual), posting photos and sharing thoughts while on my trip - provided I can find an Internet cafe for a couple of minutes.

Thank you for your prayers for a safe trip! Blessings, Chaplain Denise

Offering Welcome and Hospitality

Compassionate Outreach to Congolese Refugees

We have learned that 150 highly traumatized Congolese refugees, mostly women and children, will be arriving in the East Bay starting in July. The relocation is being coordinated through the US State Department with the aid of the International Rescue Committee and Catholic Charities. The typical family group coming here includes an HIV-infected mother with 4-5 children, all of whom will become patients at Children's Hospital Oakland. Among the 100-120 children, we estimate that approximately 25% will also be HIV-infected. We want to help these families.

Here's what we know:

  • There will be less than 10 days notice before each family arrives.
  • Each family will be taken to an apartment in Oakland along the International Blvd corridor.
  • The apartment will have 3 days of food, simple beds, one set of linen, one set of clothes for each child, minimal furniture, a few dishes.
  • These families will have tremendous needs. The women have an average of a 3rd grade education. Virtually none of them speak English or any other 'common' language. Most speak dialects from rural areas that are specific to their villages or local communities only.
  • The families will get minimal financial assistance that will barely make any ends meet and from which they will have to pay rent, food, etc., and eventually they will be expected to find work (with some assistance).
  • They will get Medi-Cal initially and we'll work hard to find them optimal health coverage.  The women will get health care through Highland Hospital's Adult Immunology Clinic and Highland's primary care program for adults.
  • Arrangements will be made for kids' school enrollment once their immunizations have been updated and Oakland Unified School District will address their special needs.

What can you do?

Donate the following:

  • Diapers and other kid-essentials.
  • Toys without batteries (batteries cost too much money. The children have NO toys and not likely have had any for the years they lived in refugee camps.
  •  New or used school supplies (or make kits that can be distributed to the school-age kids).
  •  Furniture that will make their apartments feel more cozy and comfortable.
  • Sheets, towels, hand-towels, kitchen equipment - new or used, as long as they are clean and washed.

How else can you help?

  • Consider offering your garage space for organizing and storing donations until the families arrive or we can transport donated items to a storage area at Children's Primary Care clinic.
  • Share this email with your networks. Encourage your older children to organize clothing or school-supply drives through their schools in the fall as part of their contributions to the community.
  • Make cash donations through the Children's Hospital website directly to the Pediatric HIV/AIDS Program.
  • Participate in the SF AIDS Walk in July. Join the Children's Hospital Oakland's Pediatric HIV/AIDS Program Team (#1151) and ensure that your donations go to our program.
  • Drop-off donations: Staring the week of June 17th,  you can drop off clothes, toys, books, kitchen items, etc. at the home of Oakland resident Cindy Lee, who's volunteered to collect/store donations.  (for small items only.)  (Pickups/drop-offs for larger items like furniture are still being worked out.) Call or email her first.: Cindy Lee, blee@pacbell.net,  510-705-3869
