Weekly E-Newsletter - December 19, 2012
Greetings!

Many of us wrestled this past Sunday with celebrating the Sunday of Joy in the wake of the tragic shooting. Many churches had to make the intentional choice to light the pink candle, the candle of joy, despite standing in the shadow of heartbreak. Our General Minister and President had these wise words to share about the shooting in Newtown: http://www.disciples.org/OfficeoftheGeneralMinisterandPresident/SharonsBlog/tabid/758/Default.aspx

We also know that challenges face us individually in this season, in particular as we pray for Quan who is with her husband who was just admitted to ICU. (Sandhya is sending out this week's email.)

This Sunday we approach the Sunday of Love. How important that as we move closer and closer to the shortest day and longest night of the year, that we be reminded that in the midst of struggle and pain and oppression, poor and humble people received hope, peace, joy and love in a manger in Bethlehem, and that today, no matter what burdens we carry individually or collectively, the Prince of Peace comes to us offering light. May the peace of Christ be known to you and your faith family even in these painful times. And may we be Christ to each other at this Advent moment and always.

A reminder: your news (births, baptisms, events, prayer requests) can be sent to  enews@ccncn.org in this season and in the new year.

I was at the store the other day and a customer had a slight problem. His bill came to $12.02. He turned around to me and asked if I happened to have 2 pennies. He didn't want a pocket full of change. No problem, except I had no change. I replied, "Sorry, no. In fact, many days I have no cents at all."

He was disappointed, but that was it. No other reaction. He didn't get it.

However, a couple to the side got it. They chuckled. She then added, "That's OK, most people I know don't pay attention to my 2 cents' worth anyway."

We three chuckled some more. The other person still didn't get it. The three of us got it. It was good.

Our lives are filled with moments where we "get it." Our lives also are filled with other moments where we don't "get it." I must admit that I enjoy the moments where I "get it." I'm guessing most of us are that way.

Over the last few weeks we have been sharing thoughts about the Christmas Offering. Not much more can be said at this point about the ministries of CCNC-N. Not much more can be said about the opportunity we have to support the ministries of CCNC-N through our financial gifts given as part of the Christmas Offering.  It's simply a matter of "getting it."

In Danny Kaye's movie, "The Court Jester," a phrase that is still well-known today made its debut. The phrase was "Get it? Got it? Good!" Simple, direct and quite catchy.

So, once again you are invited to consider your donation to the Christmas Offering. (It's not too late.) It will be greatly appreciated.

Get it? Got it? Good!

AND THANKS!

Bill Garrett, Minister of Faith and Giving

Longest Night Service at Niles Discovery Church,

255 H St., Fremont

December 21, 7:30 p.m.

A service of Light in the Midst of Darkness

For many, Christmas time is a bittersweet time of year. For people who are dealing with grief, significant life changes, sobriety, and other challenges, this time of year can be especially difficult.  This is also the time of year with the longest nights, so on the longest night of the year we will offer a special meditative worship service that makes time for remembering and sharing our hurting places with God le it opens our hearts to hope.

Join us on Friday, December 21, at 7:30 p.m. for a time of special music, scripture, stories, silent reflection, and healing prayer.  The service will be followed by a simple time of fellowship for those who wish to participate.

Attendees will be invited light candles during the service as a quiet response and act of prayer.  Pastor Jeff Spencer hopes that the service will provide a space for people "to release their anger, face their emptiness, have a good cry (if that's what they need), and know that God cares."

Also at Niles Discovery Church, 255 H St., Fremont,

Good-bye potluck for Pastor Steve

December 30, 11:30 a.m.

REGIONAL DEVOTIONAL Bill Garrett

By Bill Garrett, Minister of Faith and Giving

It was a fascinating dream I had the other night. It kept me entertained and puzzled...which often is the goal of a dream. I am the new pastor at a rather large church. Don't know where and I don't think I've ever seen the church before. I arrive just in time to show up for worship on the last Sunday before Christmas. It is only then that I find out we are baptizing seven youth today in worship, aged 11 to 16. It's interesting how detailed some dreams can be and yet so very vague.

The questions started pouring into my dream. I don't see the baptisms listed in the bulletin, but the youth are there and ready. Do I have waders and a baptism gown to wear? Was I supposed to ask someone to fill the baptismal font with water...hopefully warm water? And, exactly when are these baptisms supposed to take place during the worship? A whole series of questions welcomed me into this dream scenario.

But then the question pops up on what I am going to say to the youth and the congregation about the meaning of baptism, especially if the timing of these baptisms is supposed to tie into Advent and Christmas. My mind began scribbling on its imaginary note pad.

Let's see, Christmas is about both giving and receiving. That's an easy one. "Tell me," I say to the youth as they gather around me, "what gift are you really hoping for this year at Christmas?" Their answers are shared with enthusiasm. "Tell me," I say to the youth, "what gift are you especially pleased with that you will be giving someone else." Of course, I tell the congregation that they are not allowed to listen to the answers to the second question, but they might want to take note of the answers to the first one. Again, the answers come forth easily.

And then I follow up with another statement. "You know, your baptism is going to be a lot like Christmas, and yet different. You will be receiving a gift - an amazing, wonderful and meaningful gift. But this gift will accompany and nurture you for the rest of your life, because unlike a sweater, you'll never outgrow it. Unlike a game, the batteries won't run down. Unlike a gift card, you can't use it up leaving it with no value. This is a gift for life...in many, many ways." At this point, I'm amazed that the youth are following every word I say. (I told you this was a dream.)

I follow these statements with, "Your baptism is also going to be a lot like Christmas because you will be giving an amazing, wonderful and meaningful gift as well. But your gift will be different than other gifts you give because you will be giving yourself as the gift. And, no, you don't need to wrap yourself up in special paper with a bow on top. No, you don't need to give a gift receipt just in case the person receiving the gift wants to exchange your gift for someone or something else. You are the gift that God can't wait for you to give." Again, they are listening intently and even nodding with understanding and appreciation.

"And then," I continue, "you will be given the marvelous opportunity to live your life knowing you have received as well as given the best gifts of all."

With all of that said, each youth then is baptized surrounded by a feeling of celebration and thankfulness that invites the spirit of Christmas into everyone's heart.

I woke up from my dream excited that I, too, have the same marvelous opportunity to live my life surrounded by a feeling of celebration and thankfulness knowing I have received as well as given the best gifts of all. Blessed Baptisms and Merry Christmas to all!
