Montgomery County Planning Department Announces Calendar of April Events


Residents invited to get involved with special events and community meetings to discuss plans and regulations for the County's future

The Montgomery County Planning Department is pleased to announce its events calendar for April 2015. These sessions offer ways to engage with planners and Planning Board members, and help shape the future of communities within Montgomery County. Pike and Rose Wins National Award of Excellence for Planning and Development

American Planning Association and National Association of County Planners honor achievement of White Flint Sector Plan goals through new development in North Bethesda

 

The Montgomery County Planning Department is this year's recipient of an Award of Excellence from the American Planning Association (APA), County Planning Division, and its sister organization, the National Association of County Planning (NACP).

 

The award in the Planning Project category recognizes the Pike & Rose neighborhood developed by Rockville-based Federal Realty Investment Trust as realizing the goals of the White Flint Sector Plan. This plan aims to transform the parcels bordering Rockville Pike into pedestrian-friendly clusters of housing, offices, stores, restaurants and civic amenities. Pike & Rose is the first project approved and built in North Bethesda following the adoption of the new Sector Plan.

Montgomery Modern Program Wins Award from Maryland Historical Trust

Planning Department's Historic Preservation Office honored for raising community appreciation of County's midcentury modern architecture and design

 

The Historic Preservation Office of the Montgomery County Planning Department has been honored with the Excellence in Community Engagement Award from the Maryland Historical Trust. The award was announced at the 2015 Maryland Preservation Awards ceremony, hosted by the Maryland Historical Trust Board of Trustees and held on Thursday, March 27 at the Miller Senate Office Building in Annapolis.

 

This accolade recognizes the success of the Montgomery Modern program, launched by the Planning Department's Historic Preservation Office in 2013 to raise awareness of the County's remarkable legacy of mid-20th-century architecture and design. The educational and outreach initiative has included bus and bike tours of modern neighborhoods and buildings, and an interactive website. A book documenting the County's midcentury structures is now being researched and written by staff architectural historian Clare Lise Kelly. Montgomery County GreenFest, Saturday March 28

 

Join Montgomery Parks, Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection and Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission for the Inaugural Montgomery GreenFest.

 

This free event takes place from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Montgomery College Takoma Park /Silver Spring and in Jesup Black Local Park.

 

People of all ages are welcome to learn about all things green in the county, Festival will feature exhibits and entertainment, tree climbing for kids, an electric car show, workshops and speakers, environmental films and more.

Little Bennett Campground 
 

Little Bennett Campground opened on March 14 for the weekends; full-time camping opens the weekend of March 28. The campground features 91 wooded campsites. Thirty miles north of Washington D.C., the campground is a hidden getaway located in Little Bennett Regional Park. See a video about the campground on Montgomery Parks YouTube Channel. South Germantown Driving Range
 

The South Germantown Driving Range will open this weekend for the season. Located in South Germantown Recreational Park the driving range features 40 tees (10 are covered). A full complement of lessons, summer camps and after-school programs are available for individuals and groups of all ages and abilities. See www.SGDrivingRange.com for more information.

Paint Branch Trail Closure
 

A portion of the Paint Branch Trail located in Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Park will be closed beginning in April as part of a restoration project by the MD State Highway Association. The trail is expected to reopen in the fall.

Applications Due on April 1 for Montgomery County Historic Preservation Tax Credits

Owners of county properties may be eligible to receive a 25 percent tax credit for various rehabilitation or maintenance projects, such as fixing a window, replacing a roof or repainting

 

The Montgomery County Planning Department is accepting applications from county property owners seeking a financial reward for faithfully restoring the exteriors of their historic structures. To be eligible for the Montgomery County Historic Preservation Tax Credit, the property must be listed in the Montgomery County Master Plan for Historic Preservation. Watch the short video here.
 

Opening of Athletic Fields Will Be Delayed Until April 1

 

All park and elementary / middle school athletic fields will open late this year due to unusually harsh weather conditions. Field are expected to open on April 1, if the weather permits, instead of the originally planned open date of March 15.  Additional information and updates about fields conditions will be available on the field rainout line at 301-765-8787 or through Montgomery Parks ALERT notifications here.
 

Capital Improvements Program Public Forum

April 23, 7 p.m. at Montgomery Regional Office Auditorium


 
Join Montgomery Parks and Montgomery County Department of Recreation to learn about the Capital Improvements Program for 2015 - 2022. A joint public forum will take place on April 23 where the public is invited to ask questions and provide suggestions for future park and recreation projects. More information is available here.
